View Full Version : zx10r got a tickle up

kiwifruit
14th November 2006, 14:43
In September i bought a 2004 zx10r from AFC in Palmerston North (good guys, go see them), what a bike but i couldn't help myself.... i had to muck around with it :D
So muck around i did!

First thing was a steering damper, hyperpro as i didn't really want to spend the fat end of a grand on one. This was probably the best mod, makes the bike alot safer on the road, esp with the condition of it in places. It did take the "holy shit" out of riding it which i did kind of enjoy tbh....... but its alot more ridable now.

Next was the exhaust.
Racefit growler thru my good man Jace at motostyle. 800 grams, hand made, grade one air craft titanium. :shit:
Bloody expensive and bloody loud. At first i thought i'd done the wrong thing, "its too loud!"..... after a few days i got used to it (already having a deaf right ear helps ;) )
Now i just love it, makes the bike, imho, s'not everyone's cup of tea of course, but I like it!!!! (thats all that matters innit?)

TRE
I couldn't stand the thought of not getting the full effect in the first 4 gears so (after much research) i got a timing retard eliminator from ivan's performance http://www.ivansperformanceproducts.com/
this smoothed the throttle response more than power increase, had the side effect of making it keen to climb up itself, all good.

Then came the power commander and K&n filter.
By now the bike was running alot worse than the factory set up, the PC didn't do anything to help this with the zero map it came with so off to GP Honda in Tauranga for a custom map :D (good guys, go see them)
The bike now pulls strong and smooth from bugger all to redline. What a difference! I even made it from Tauranga to Taupo without the fuel light coming on :-O

Now today i have had the suspension set up to Sport Riders' May 2005 issue recommendations and then tweaked from there. That made it feel alot better, twas very skippy before, even with my heavy arse on it. Am yet to get it fully sorted but its ALOT better than the previous state (all over the show!).

Also today ive fitted a smaller front sprocket (16T)
The very short ride i had a few moments ago was pretty cool, makes the thing more of a unicycle than a motorcycle hehe.
Apparently the bike will still do 180mph before rev cut, that should be enough for me

To sum it up,
i absolutely love the bike, its a BEAST! Far too much bike for me :Punk:

That confirms it bro....you are nuts!.

Those things get the front wheel skyward more than any other bike I have ever ridden and that was in factory trim.

Nah I'm not remotely concerned re speedo healers and have never seen a reason for one.
5% out on the speed...whooopy! As far as adding extra kms,I'm not fussed either as I had mine installed within a 1000kms from new so easy to work out.

-1 on front isn't a huge change it would acutally be more accurate due to factory speedo errors.

its more when you got -1/+2 like i did which thru the speedo out by 15% so i have put a speedo healer, -1 don't both just put it on, be on save side compare ya speedos to another bike or gps

A friend of mine bought the new old stock 04 one that has been languishing in Norjos down here (Chch) for the last couple of years. The price he got it for was scary cheap - certainly made me take notice of what the bike market is obviously like at the moment. So far all he has done is the new front indicators and an Ohlins steering damper. He's only just finished running it in though. It's a great looking bike and funnily enough when I see it parked behind my trusty old 98 R1 the lines are almost identical. Shame they had to ruin the styling with that 06 abomination (no offence to 06 owners). I'd like to get an 04 one myself.

And what does getting a smaller front sprocket do? Makes it wheelie more? What happens if you get a larger rear one?
Both make it wheelie more... The front sprocket teeth are normally said to have the effect of 3 rear teeth, however, its around a 2.4 ratio I think.

Ie, one down the front, is about 3 up at the back... going too small on the front can give you clearance issues with the chain, and depending on speedo drive, you can potentially have a mis-reading speedo... You end up with a faster accelerating bike (hence wheelies) and a lower top end, but when the bike does 300 or 290... well... really, who cares :devil2:

that bikes got some balls. Sounds awesome out on the track, but surprisingly it isnt that loud when you're riding the bike. My friend said it looked like it was 'on rails' and it felt that way, being able to roll smoothly up and down through 2nd gear for the large part of the track meant the suspension was allowed to do its thing and deal with the bumps and lay the power down.

Did manage to lift the front wheel underpower, but i must be fat because it didnt do it as much as i was expecting... still got to 260kmh+ pretty fucking quick though!

I went to get the suspension set up by Shaun Harris at Moto-Dynamix near New Plymouth today.
What a difference!!

Shaun asked me what i liked and disliked about the bike's handling, i did my best to tell him what i perceived the "problems" to be....
He then took the bike for a short ride to see for himself how the thing handled.
A few adjustments and then back out for another quick test ride.

Then it was my turn. I don't know what he did tbh but it worked!
The rear end is now spending twice as much time in contact with the road and the front feels sorted as.
Once i got on some roads i'd been on before, thats when the major differences showed themselves....
Without any suger coating, the thing is ON RAILS compared to its previous state..... much smoother with heaps less "poggo'ing" while still tracking as tight as ever.

I'm no expert so its hard for me to describe the difference this set up has made, lets just say its ALOT better :D

Thanks heaps Shaun, you're a clever bugger.
