Now that Battlefield 2142 has been released for quite some time.
I gather there are plenty of KB members on the local Xtra & ICONZ servers.

So whats your soldiers names and whats your favourite kitouts?

Your stats can be found here: http://www.2142-stats.com/

I have heard there is a pretty invasive user agreement bundled in with the game. Pretty much allows them to see everything on your computer.

Nah they have added ingame advertising. There are some billboards scattered through the game which companies pay to have their ad's up no different to any other billboard you would come across driving around Auckland. Now seeing that BF2142 is software it never takes long for someone to find a work around.

A NZ dude has found a way to block the ingame advertising and ad his own

LOL and for some of these guys that sounds like their whole life... right there in ones and zeros...

(general comment) real life is what happens when the screen is turned OFF... make sure you don't miss it - it's not too bad.

So while they claim it's for the I.G.A., there is a type of 'spyware' installed with the game.

You might also want to note that these articles were based on specualtion prior to the games release. Also NZ law prevents this type of information being collected, hence NZ is not affected.

With the European and US sales they included a slip that outlined the advertising as it can be done there if you have been told.

Also if they did get personal information it can't be used against you as its not being obtained legally to be used

i don't think nerds shooting each other on the interweb are of a great enough interest to anyone to validate wasting their time collecting their "personal" information.

more like what kind of geeky crap will these weirdos buy off us?

From what I read it's not speculation, confirmed by EA that it is in the game but not for any malicious reasons. Also from what I understand as the servers are based in countries where this technology is legal it don't matter squat what national laws are in place. But ah fuck it, what do I know. I'm just going from what I've been told and what I've read on the 'net.

No dramas.

Mate - It rocks!

Admittedly, I wasn't overly taken by it initially, but the more you play and the more you unlock items, the more tactical and better it gets. I'd say it's as good as BF2, just a nice refreshing change of scenery really.
I love walking into an opening with a Battlewalker and seeing a whole heap of enemy infantry running along - It's just soooooo, Excessive!!!

Mate, I grew up in Porirua....

One of the original gaming whores. My old man used to own some of the first ever arcade machines back in the 70's. There was never any hope for me!!!

I'd sell my house before selling my PC.

Besides, I can normally be found on the servers between 4am and 7pm on weekends, right before I'm about to head down to the Porirua Markets to buy my Pineapple Pies, Taro Fritters, Banana Poke and Ika Mata!

Spyware? They can put as much spyware on there as they like. I run a dedicated gaming machine, nothing on it at all but 4-5 games. I don't even have an antivirus software and I've disabled all firewalls.

Different story on the laptop though.

System Requirements
System Requirements for Battlefield 2142 are as follows:[26]

Windows XP
1.7 GHz Intel Celeron D/Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon XP/Sempron Processor
4 GB free hard drive space (5 GB hard drive space recommended)
512 MB RAM (1 GB recommended)
DirectX 9.0c compatible video card (128 MB memory and NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700 or ATI Radeon 8500 chip set)
DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card
Broadband connection (cable, DSL, or faster)
A DVD-ROM Drive (boxed version)

It'll run, but with that video card it will struggle to get a decent framerate ....

To be honest: 1GB Ram drops the performance Massively.

Ram's a major issue on this game. 2GB is recommended and obviously as good a graphics card as you can afford.
My machine runs OK with a AMD3500+ chipset and the 2GB Ram.
Running a GeForce 6800 Ultra - 256Mb Ram.
However, I still begin getting Lag when onscreen explosions begin getting heavy.

Right, off to the ICONZ server it is then!!!

...must say i have tried to avoid getting 'into' these sorts of games... ...had a friend (had - past tense) that took it too far.. spending every penny he had on upgrading his pc, and staying up too the early hours 'immersed' inside of the game.. it can be very addictive and can ruin your life! he lost his girlfriend and most of his friends, as he would rather play online games (half life etc) than go out into the REAL WORLD and socialise.

..Im not damming them, but got out of that rat race of upgrading my pc every 3-4 months to keep up with latest games... bought an iMac and never looked back! It is addictive... but then again my friends always ask me why it takes me hours to get to their house... ...motorbikes are addictive too! I take the loooong way every time! ;)

As with everything in this world (the real world) moderation is the key, and thats an extreme example of not moderating yourself.

...Dont forget, the world outside of the computer is great! Try it sometime!

Oh and welcome to the site dude, dont take my words personally; like all posts they are simply the opinion of one person!

Similar system to mine Dafe, except I'm running a 7800GTX

As for gaming addiction it can happen. I play games rather than watch TV, especially with the crap they put on these days.

PCI-e is way faster than AGP these days.

Although if you have a pretty good AGP and what to keep using it for awhile but also want to upgrade the CPU to later model you can get a range of boards for Intel and AMD that has both the AGP and PCI-e slots.

I'm using one and there nothing wrong with them plus the other bonus is that they are cheap $100

Ha, there's a few familiar faces in here from my fond times of BF2. It's amazing how many gamers are into bikes...

I'm still officially waiting for ForgottenHope2 (1 year later).

Obviously I was addicted to this stuff, I would play from like 10pm to 5am on the weekends o.O! Rough patch of my life I spose, all things considered. But I had to quit because it was getting too competetive for me - I often raged at the most trivial things ;s.

My favourite role was commanding, totally off the hook when you have a few squads of clanners at your command - (it's motivated me pursue a career in management within IT ;s).
