I think that's quite clever. Tube TVs do have better picture quality than LCDs and Plasmas

Depends - come and look at one of ours - choice. :Punk:
However - I still have a 100Hz 32" TV and I think it's pretty damn good. The older generation flat panels are pretty awful.

100Hz CRT screens give a good picture.
But it still can't be compared to an HD LCD.
Plasma is junk, especially when it comes to lifespan.

i've yet to see an LCD that didn't look like shit.
plasma has a better picture from what I've seen but i'll be fucked if i'm paying three grand plus for a fuckin idiot box, especially given the quality of programming on NZ television.
that's a few sets of tyres and a lot of gas. i'll just have to occupy the rainy days with drinking and shagging the missus.

View digital TV or a DVD on an LCD next to a CRT...
Analog reception will look shit on an HDTV because it is shit...

i think you're putting the cart before the horse mate.
NZ is still coming to terms with "colour" tv.

true
depends on resolution and refresh rate
not true - if you buy a cheap plasma its true.
Good plasma panels have a life of 60,000 hours, LCD around 55,000 hours. Cheap crap plasma 12,000. HOWEVER the life of a plasma is measured to half brightness (in general) but an LCD is the average life of the back light.
The main issue with the picture on any screen is the quality of the signal going into it. Video standards are stupidly complex with all manner of shite being pumped out. The biggest laugh is super doper screens plugged into a Sky box compsite output.... bwahahahah... why bother?
However - like all technology, it all has it strengths and weaknesses.
Affordable? 100hz 32" CRT by a good maker
Home movies/DVD watching? 1366 x 768 Plasma (monitor if you can afford it)
High light or uncontrolled light? 1366 x 768 LCD panel
BIG? Projector and high gain screen. Be warned VERY high running costs.
Be VERY careful buying cheap plasma / lcd TV's. These are usually a domestic device with a panel made in China and probably 3 or 4 generations old. No power unit cooling etc etc. Yuck - People still sell the old 852 x 480 WVGA standard which is not too flash.....

Well - some are good - some are not. I've seen some great Samsungs etc and some utter shite. Even in our own range some models are way nicer than others. (our 37" LCD TV is a belter)
Look for a High Definition panel, 16:9 WXGA (1366 x 768 Resolution) and a response rate of 8 Milliseconds or better. contrast Ratio: 1200:1
The response rate (or refresh rate) has always been LCD's weakness as you can get blurring during high speed video action (fast moving objects on the screen look blurry or stagger).
Play with the remote and check the video settings when shopping by comparison. The shop will have the brightness cranked up (hi bright mode) but it will reduce the panels life.
Cheers
