Looks kinda cool (http://www.therideoftheveterans.com/). Some Vietnam Vets doing their thing in the saddle, raising money for a good cause.

A double amputee as well. Good on them!

March of the mercenaries, more like. Got his legs blown off while "serving" in the South African army.

Yea i've been chatting to the caretaker at school on and off and being a veteran himself he's off to join them on his Guzzi. Top bloke donated me a cb360 to rebuild, had it out at the track day too :).
Awesome to see some of our most honourable men out there doing some good :)

Tell me more...
I'd love to hear some of the stuff he did, where he went, and why he's a bad guy. Full facts not needed, just dates, locations and a precise of events
Just 4 or 5 would do.

No not Mercenaries in that hicup...... good many of kiwi blokes acrossed over the ditch and helped out with our mates, and my dad stands proud for his effects, So to me this is no march of no bloody mercenaries, a right of giving back to the young, their right....:Playnice:

To help calibrate my terms of reference, I need somebody to explain to me the difference between "mercenaries" and those who get paid to "help out" in another country's armed conflict?

I suspect that Hitcher is specifically referring to Dave Barr - the rider who lost both his legs supporting the apartheid government as a mercenary in the South African army.

He wrote a book about an epic journey across the world and what bike did he do it on A HARLEY and it was a sporty (a girl's bike to some). But I think he lost his legs on landmine and I think it was in Angola as a merc in the 70's when SOF magazine made heros sort of like google searches, I've got his contact details if anyone is interested he's on a Harley site I am on sometimes. Real interesting character and real down to earth sort of a "Godam" Burt Munro.

I can see the confusion here... is he a legend 'coz he's a vet who's still biking as a double amputee
-or-
Is he a muppet 'coz he got his legs blown off propping up an unjust regime... heh heh heh... Fuel for another healthy KB debate!
