Riding Between Cars

I know we all have :done: it,
I'm probably one of the average offenders.
But what are the legal/ moral standings on riding between the cars on the ground to a halt, almost going backwards, faster if I got off and pushed motorways.
I also had a thought, maybe petitioning the council or proper authority to have motorbikes use the bus lanes on the motorways...
Just a random thought, but would like to hear someone else’s thoughts on the matter.

From memory the road code says that you are allowed to overtake vehicles whilst in the same lane as long as there is sufficient room to do so safely, which is a pretty amiguous statement and open to interpretation, but at relatively low speeds among all but stationary vehicles on a motorway I would think it fairly safe. There is however the technical matter of having to indicate 3 seconds before switching lanes etc. So in summary, ride the line & keep the thumb on the indicator*. But better still, do what I did - move to the provinces. What commute?

Ironically the only time a peeved motorist (envious of me on a bike scooting past his long stationary vehicle) moved over to close the gap on me, it was a friend of mine with whom I used to commute in his car:D . He didn't recognise me. I simply went round him "safely".

I lane-split on urban city roads and I frequently filter through to the front of traffic light queues and intersections.

However I hesitate to lane-split on the motorway as the raised lane markers sometimes get a bit slippery and that gives me the shits.
