Much impressed by Donor's attire I have acquired a pair of yellow waterproof trousers myself...this is after 2 days of wearing damp leather trousers on the bike.

Working on finding babysitters - I think this will be Chickadee's (Mrs McJim) first KB ride.

Can't see how listening to some elderly Irishmen singing would have any undesirable affect on your ability to ride a bike.

I'll take flight squadron leader duties if Mav/McJim ain't out there! (Heavens! I'm volunteering - a no-no!) :dodge:

Just remember, there will be plenty of nana points interspersed with the occasional legal high speed blats! (In the interest of maintaining a newbie friendly atmosphere and not doing what those guys out Thursday do!) :msn-wink:

Woot! My bike's in the shop now so hopefully it'll be mechanically spic-and-span for the (my first!) KB ride on the 3rd.

Just don't laugh at the 6'1 guy on a gpx :D

We never laugh, we just smile and snigger quietly, unless its a Hyosung of course, but that goes without saying.

It looks pretty certain that McJim, Maverick and even Chickadee (Mrs McJim) will be in attendance since we're signed on for the event. It's YOUR name that seems conspicuous by it's absence!:dodge:

Will know nearer the time I suppose - have you really downgraded from a CBR250R to a CBR20R or is that a typo that you might want to fix?

all you need to do is start a thread called "250 ride today - short notice" and see who turns up - It was pouring with rain last weekend and despite the run being cancelled I put up a post saying "I'll be there rain or shine - all welcome" and got a turn out of 5 despite the poor weather.

Go for it if you have the time.

I have other commitments (offspring) that means I can only get a day every second weekend for the bike.

Not sure if I can make the ride now :( carb problems thread here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=843239#post843239), I've done what I can with what little knowledge I have but I'm not sure if it'll survive a long ride. Which crushes me, I was really looking forward to my first group ride :(

Gonna have to see tomorrow if what I did worked and take it out clevedon ways to see how the poor thing goes.

Hey Mav... Might send you a text on Sunday morning weather pending about this ride... fully booked tomorrow but may be free on Sunday... What time is the ride starting and where is it heading (by PM I know)

Edit... Or even better... I may get Sam to go on the ride instead... that way a few of you get to meet her... and she gets some more experience riding the ZXR before we do our fulls... but be warned Sam rides at nana's pace (which is good... she knows her limits) but she's only ever riden twisties twice and neither of them on the ZXR... so yeah... I think she should do ok...

She's been saying she wants to go on one of the rides for a while now... so thought who better to ride with than you... afterall I've seen you ride and know that she'll be in good hands :) I'll confirm with Sam when she gets to my work...

As a general point, Mav and McJim have both been quite upfront about the purpose of these rides. They are for newbies and the less confident to improve their skills in a reasonably supportive group environment. People like Sam and Chickadee who are very new to biking.

As a consequence, the overall pace is quite slow. They are not balls-to-the-wall throttle pinning fangs. The intention is for (most of) the group to ride at the pace of the slowest rider. If you ride hard out, you'll probably end up riding by yourself a long way out front a lot of the time.

This isn't a pointed comment aimed at anyone in particular. Just so that everyone knows what Sunday's ride is intended to be all about.

Thanks for taking point for the more experienced riders. Yesterday I thought we were looking at about 12 riders attending - I was a bit awestruck trying to brief nearly 30 riders on where we were going today.

Glad to see a lot of new riders on the road - hopefully days like today will help give everyone the experience and confidence they need to get the most out of their bikes.

I'd like to especially thank the members of Ulysses that kept us company on the road to Kaiaua. It was nice to know they were behind me rather than being tailgated by an angry cager!

Met The Dover and Finn on the way home and caught up on the terrible news this weekend. Got a lump in my throat as I type. My thoughts go out to the families concerned.

Thanks to everyone who attended today.

Well, deep breath - after reading the threads of the fatal accidents concerning fellow kbers  I'm happy that everyone was safe and sound and got to put some of their skills into practice. Nothing silly or flash, just the sound basics and glad to see everyone enjoying themselves at the same time!

I'll get the photos posted up ... once I've had a quiet moment to reflect on my own riding experiences from up north and how to keep motorbiking for a long, long time safely.

Only hairy moment of the day was when we were returning from Kaiaua to Clevedon, the crazy yahoo in a car overtaking into on coming traffic from around a blind bend. I slowed down plenty and hoped like heck we weren't about to witness a tragedy. Also on another note, two other bikers (not any of our group) doing crazy overtake manuever with only 25-30m of clear :nono:

Big turn out for a little 250 newbie friendly ride! Guess everyone needed to learn something! Mav - thanks for leading out the faster 250's, I was squadron leader for the first time for the slower 250's (slow? We all doing legal! 50-70 is plenty fast at times!) ... ahh, what a great day it was - now the reality when others not so fortunate have fallen doing what we all love to do - mastering our ride. RIP to those who have passed

It began with coffee. Good coffee. Coffee that was 24 hours late, but it began with coffee none the less.

Toodled to the BP with the esteemed Blue Thunder, who was to become our Medic, TEC and general all round bloody nice guy, and hooked up with a few guys and a gal.

By the time I had topped up the tank and had a quick ass scratch, I was in danger of not being able to get a park, as a mystic portal opened, and the legions of the 250 poured forth and filled the air with the smell of brimstone... well okay, exhaust fumes. (Not a bloody patch on that good 'ol 2 stroke perfume though)

After the essential coffees/power drinks/last minute dunny stops, it was left to the surprisingly loud (he's usually SO timid) McJim to round up the masses for a well received briefing. He must have used his outside voice, as it managed to attract a couple of stragglers off the road - don't know if they were ours, probably just didn't dare ride past for fear of Tartan Retribution!

Departed the BP, and headed off toward Whitford. Conquered Whitford, so set forth to spank Clevedon, then Kawakawa Bay.

Should mention here before the rumors start, yes, I *DID* get the shit scared out of me by a Ginny backfiring whilst heading downhill on some twisties.

Twice.

Anyhoo... managed to wear a stone to the visor about 3km out of Kawakawa Bay, courtesy of the Vamr mobile, highlights the importance of that staggered riding!

Everything else was pretty unremarkable, I managed to get to Kaiaua and back 3 times before everyone else even got halfway... okay okay, I rode like a freaking NANA! Today was the first time I have navigated what *I* would call serious twisties.

Had the lovely lady Lucy behind me on her mighty steed, managed to lose sight of her in my mirrors about 20km out of Kaiaua, so backed off and caught her up, swapped positions with her, and mate... that girl can ride... she was whipping round corners without brakes where I was personally praying to the gods of Hydraulics to save me from impending peril, or worse, making a twat of myself. (That happened later, explain in a minute...)

So we made it to Kaiaua safe and well. This of course was helped by the tail wind kindly supplied by a fat-ass C90 Boulevard stretching its legs on the straights a few km out of town, thanks Simon! :D

Lunch was all good, had a chin wag with Vamr and... Al... sorry mate, forgotten your KB name. Mind you, I barely remember mine sometimes.

After the nosh up was done, and the L&P had released it's last belch from below, the crowd geared up, saddled up, and the chippy folk sighed a breath of relief, and dreamed fond dreams of early retirement after our grazing frenzy.

I saw a group bugger off, thought "Yay, there go the FAST guys".

I saw another group go - "Yay, there go the INTERMEDIATE guys".

I saw another group go - "Huzzah, that's us, onward proud newbies!!"...

...sigh...

About 1km down the road, I realised quite quickly, that the first group I had seen, was the first portion of the intermediate skilled mob.

Yes, I had tagged onto the end of the "bigger boys".

Managed to practice a few high speed... okay, 50-60km/h... overtakes past Nana and her bowling club mates on some nice long straight patches, so it was all good, and finally re-joined the grown ups along with a puzzled looking Mav at Kawakawa bay.

Jumped back into the right group, and tailed GIJoe back to Clevedon, which was brilliant - he takes some nice lines, heightened my awareness of patches of shininess on the tarmac, and thanks to his riding, an sage words, has brought my cornering along nicely.

Dropped out at the Shell in Clevedon, as it was more economical for me to head straight back to Papakura, where I promptly fell into a bourbon.

Lessons learned today:

1) Cornering is easy. It only becomes hard when you fail to use the basics. Basics are CALLED basics because that's what they are. Point your head in the direction you are going. Lean. Use a bit of throttle to bring you round, the bike LIKES to be made to do the work, and it saves those WIIIIIIDE corners that make you feel silly, or even worse hurt.

2) Staggered riding when on a large ride works and is a very good idea. The stone I wore in my visor was unavoidable, as both Vamr and I were approaching a corner, and due to the build up of loose metal, lines were few and far between. Had it been on a straight, it would have sailed merrily past me, without causing any concern.

3) Look after your fellow riders. If the person behind lags, slow up. This has a domino effect from the rear to the front, and nobody is going to mind slowing their fun a little when the welfare of a team member is at question.

4) GNs are fucking loud when they backfire. I hate GNs when they backfire.

5) Remember your place. Take better stock of your group leaders, mid pointers if you have one, and your TEC - he may be there to look after the flock, but he still needs someone keeping an eye out for him too!

Thanks go to Simon and Fiona on the Boulevard, and Steve and Christine on the Trike - appreciate the baby sitting guys, I know it must have been hard throttling back, but it was awesome knowing we had you there to keep us on the straight and narrow.

And now for the unpleasant bit.

3 KB family members have fallen this weekend.

I extend love and condolences to the families, friends and associates who were close to these folks.

Losing a loved one is the hardest thing in the world. They leave us memories, but memories are no substitute for the physical.

I have never met any of the gentlemen who left us this weekend, but I know that a great many of the KB family have.

As such, I know that the knowledge and information passed from the 3 to other KBers, will eventually filter through to others on two wheels.

This can be part of their legacy to the Motorcycling world.

Let the good things they have shared with us, become part of our ever expanding base of learning, and remember them with fondness, for that's what friends do.

Rest well guys - and thank you.

Enough from me, til next ride, everyone stay safe.

D.

To all the guys and gals on todays 250 ride.
Thanks for putting up with someone with just a few more cc's to spare, it was a pleasure seeing a well organised session aimed at getting the newbies out and about and riding in a safe even if unfamiliar teritory.
Great to see such numbers enjoying the day, and hopefully learning some new skills or honeing those recently acquired. Nice to see that my professional help was not required on anyone (keep that up).
The scoff at Kaiaua was as usuall brilliant and only matched by the weather.
Maverick: well done on arranging a great day.
Donor: if you want the wing mirror back that I sucked off your machine as I passed your sorry bright yellow ass. Its still in my saddle bag:beer:
Everyone else sorry forgot all the names (old age is a bugger of a thing!) hope to see you out on the streets sometime.

Thanks to all that attended today, awesome ride - looking forward to the next opportunity (with babysitters for our weeins).

Really enjoyed using what I've learned from the BRONZ RRRS course and definitely learned heaps, some of the corners were a little scary for a newbie, but taking it easy and we all got there and back safe and sound.

Cheers to GIJOE1313 for leading the way for us slowbies. Guess I might be moving up a group, for a newbie I'm (apparently) not such a Nana.

Had an unwanted hitch hiker in my helmet, plenty of dead bugs on the helmet and realised one of the wee buggers got in a vent and after stopping and trying to evict, the wee bugger was still persisting on catching a free lift, it was sitting on the nose guard inside the helmet when hubby McJim spotted the wee bugger and gave it the flick. Thanks babe! Didn't really enjoy having a wee insect buzzing around my face, at least the Oakleys saved me from getting icky bug eye.

Looking forward to seeing you on the next available newbie ride. LOL

Condolences to the family and friends of the 3 bikers that we sadly lost this weekend. Saw LooseBruce only a couple of hours before tragedy struck, still can't believe it. Took the family out to Miranda for a swim when we saw them parked up waiting for riders. Stopped for a quick hello. RIP.

I agree, there were some serious bad decisions on my part in the first installment of those twisties.. there were 2 times when I had to convince myself I could corner tighter, I think the most part for me was just not knowing the road - gotta take things much slower I think!

I too was watching Lucy for the most part on the way to kaiaua, we'd get into some twists and suddenly the bright jacket of hope has disappeared! Great cornering!

Are pics of the rides usually posted in the same thread or are they in another forum all together? Just seeing all the bikes cuddled up together was great for my first group ride :D

I'd also like to extend my condolences to the families of the ones lost. I didn't know the bikers personally but it goes without saying that it's never good when tragedies like this happen. :(

I'll get the photos posted up - just my heart is feeling a little heavy from the losses to our family of free spirited, like-minded souls. I have a lot of photos from the two days of riding I have done this weekend, I feel it's superfluous - but then I think ... those bikers would have wanted us to keep enjoying what gets us out there. When so many others would not bother or consider, bikers test themselves to get out and learn more and put it into practice, and then, go out and learn some more! :scooter:

So, yes! I will post them up! Watch this space!

Hey! Good effort! Now as I recall from a wise old hand here on the forum, when I posted my first piccies - need to edit/white paste/delete any licence plate numbers from the shots! I was sorta :o but hey! No worries, we all gotta learn someplace! :innocent:

Not a dig, but trying to protect our secret biker identities! :msn-wink:

Righto - now for my horrid selections of photos! Now after all that, I fergit to charge me battery up and only took *8* photos in total! And most of them have McJim in it! Is there nothing he won't stoop to and try to be in *ALL* of the twofiddy ride piccies!?

Methinks we will have to carry a cardboard cut-out of McJim permanently to have his scottish presence around!

Note the use of matrix style art direction! The last two were in Kaiaua, before :o my camera ran outta go-juice! Damn! Where is that electric mango I coulda got a recharge from?

A few thanks to those who helped with this ride:

McJim, thanks for helping with organizing and running as usual, (you shout louder then me too) much appreciated.

Gijoe1313: Thanks for taking point for the slow group, where most riders want to go for a blast you are always volunteering to potter along and play much needed shepard for the newer riders.

The guys from Ulysses: Thanks for the help and bringing up the rear, you are most welcome to join us on any future rides,

Gremlin: Thanks for leading the faster group. While it is primarily a learner ride we want people of all levels to enjoy themselves and extend their skills. A ride that can be very challenging to a new rider can be considered boring to another, it doesnt make one person right or wrong its just the way things are.

And lastly thanks to everyone who turned up on the ride. It was great to meet you all and I hope you enjoyed yourselves and will come with us again.
Next ride is the 16th of December, should be on the Calender now and I will start a thread shortly.

This weekend has been overshadowed by bad news as we all know, and while I didnt know the riders personally it is obvious from the tributes flowing in that they were a couple of great guys. RIP.

I always encourage beginners to realise their mistakes and learn from their accidents. Sometimes freak accidents do happen and there is nothing at all that could have been done to prevent it, but if through rides like this we can help beginners learn the skills to prevent basic mistakes and promote a sensible riding attitude then hopefully that grounding will help save peoples lives or skin someday. I think that makes it worth it.

Ride safe out there, I want to meet you all again on a future ride

"she was whipping round corners without brakes where I was personally praying to the gods of Hydraulics to save me from impending peril, or worse, making a twat of myself. (That happened later, explain in a minute...)"

Thanks for the compliment Donor - here is my secret: Get a really slow bike that doesnt go fast on the straights, then you don't NEED to brake when you get to a corner!

Yeah but nah but yeah but nah but yeah but....also being taught to drive by family members with crappy cars in the 80's before warrants got strict, engine braking was emphasized as an essential skill in case the brakes ever failed, which they havent yet, touch wood.

Have to admit I love the twisties, but a couple of them I was a bit wobbly on. I've driven over that road a few times so it wasnt a total stranger to me. But I was very tickled to read your post, thanks! It was a good write up of a good day.

Great fun ride, I'll definitely do more of those - seeing as no-one can see or hear as I am laughing and giggling like a madwoman coming down the fun windy hils.

PS was it my Ginny back firing??? I didnt hear anything.

Ahh good on everyone for coming out and riding safely! The smiles I saw on people's faces was a joy to behold!

Mav : As usual well organised and no sense of needing to rush, now I know how it feels when you're always checking your mirrors, over your shoulder, etc!
McJim : On ya for taking TEC, always a position that requires patience and understanding
Gremlin : Thanks for stepping up and taking point for the more experienced riders
Ulysses : Great to have you guys come along for this

To all other riders : Thanks for riding safely and everyone learning something new! I didn't get around to make introductions as I would have liked to most, but I'm sure time will sort that out (all good things take time, to quote a cheesy ad!)

Zeocen and Donor, I think you'd be surprised how you looked if you had a video of yourselves, I thought everyone there looked pretty flash even the other GN lady who reckoned she was really new. I think we all looked better than we felt!

Thanks again to GI Joe, Mav and McJim and all for making it a friendly welcoming ride.

Such a shame about the rest of the weekend and the fatalities. RIP.

Zeocen and Donor, I think you'd be surprised how you looked if you had a video of yourselves,

Everyone looks good on a bike - it's a kind of natural law...like gravity..

I'm pleased to read all the posts where the first time KB riders got something good out of the day - I'm glad. It was my wife's first KB run too. We need to find some more babysitters so I can take her out on more (otherwise she'll be the one on the runs and I'll be the one at home with the kids before too long!)

Also please PM me or Maverick with any suggestions you might have to improve the ride/it's format. I admit I am far from perfect and will happily listen to advice and observations that we may have overlooked.

Keep suggestions off the forum please (PM only as above) as people may mistake a suggestion as a format change.

Thanks to everyone who organised and lead the ride.

Was great to finally meet some fellow bikers and be quickly reintroduced to one's own mortality (certain hairpins = running wide... oops).

Was kind of ironic talking to McJim and him describing watching a newbie running wide and enjoying a dirt ride, only to do the same (luckily with no one watching) an hour later. Offroading in gravel on a kr150 is an experience I don't particularly want to repeat but saying that, did manage to stay upright, avoid a powerpole AND steer back onto the road.

See you all on the next run.

Well glad to know that all went well, running wide is something we all do - and fortunately give ourselves a scare and a knock on the helmet "ooh..now what did I do wrong so I can do it right?"

Just remember it's easier to brake in advance of the corner to bleed off the speed so you can look through the corner ... or ...

slow... down before the corner
look... through the corner, observing road condition and line to take
lean... the bike through by countersteering and continue to look
roll on the throttle ... a little more as you ride through the corner

Keep reading as much as you can about the fine art of motorcycling, check through the threads, ask questions and find a mentor!

Shucks, I'm still trying to be a safer rider and going on these 250 rides is a good way to keep myself fresh on the basics and techniques of taking corners well! :o heavens know I've ridden wide on those very same corners we all did on the weekend!

vamr
4th December 2006, 12:35
Cheers for that, in reflection target fixation and stiffening of arms definitely was the culprit on the hairpins.

At the moment maneuvering the bike feels rather wooden as majority of actions are conscious decisions, which I assume only riding time can fix.

It wasn't the left hand downhill hairpin on the way to Kawakawa bay was it?

I'm kind of glad I said "If you do run out of road don't assume you are about to crash or you will....try to keep riding and you'll have the best chance of not falling off - even if it means riding halfway across a paddock."

I think there are a multitude of corners both ways that could cause problems, I am guessing you mean after lunch on the way back to the bay, I nearly had a problem on that corner as my foot grazed the ground going around the one you are thinking of. had to straighten up a bit, move my foot back further on the peg and then lean in a bit more again. I didnt have to be leaning that hard but I was dropping the bike down a lot to try scratch off my friends chicken strips :sunny:

Don't take my chicken strip comments seriously dude. There are loads of top class riders out there that go round corners very quickly with out scraping bits off and with mile-wide chicken strips.

Just one small point with the running off the tarmac running wide thing.

If you've gone for a bit of an off-road adventure, it's quite likely that your tyres will be covered in crap - small stones, dirt, etc.

Don't try anything too hardcore on them for a corner or two until all the crap has had a chance to fall off.
