Quiz Night 9 Dec

Hi all,

We are fundraising for a Tsunami relief and Refugee Aid trip to Thailand at the end of the year. As a part of that, we will be putting together a Quiz Night!

Date / Time: 9 Dec, 7pm.
Venue: Elim Auditorium, 22 Tennyson St, off Tory St in the city.
Cost: $10

Teams of 3 - 7 people can join together, or we can put individuals into teams. Prizes for winning team/s and a bunch of spot prizes to be won... The quiz will be held in the Elim Church auditorium, and it's purely a social fundraiser, so no preaching or bible questions! Promise :Punk:

There will also be a creche running in an adjoining room for kids up to 5 yrs old.

The main recipients of aid will be Karen refugees on both sides of the Thai-Burma border. There has been a civil war raging inside Burma since 1948, left behind by a very messy handover of power when the British left. Since then, the Burmese military government has cracked down on democracy and attacked other ethnic minorities living within its borders.

Even though it’s isolated by much of the world through economic sanctions, the military dictatorship is funded by being the largest heroine and methamphetamine exporters in the world. With this money, they buy guns and arms for the ethnic genocide that is going on there.

Think “Tears of the Sun”, and the village scene. This is real life in Burma. I know this ‘coz I’ve trekked with soldiers of the ethnic groups, through enemy lines and minefields to survey the area and organise medical aid for internally displaced people and refugees.

Money raised will go toward food, medicine, blankets and clothing for these people.

Another group of recipients are Burmese workers caught up in the 2004 Tsunami. Driven out of their country by the civil war, about 22,000 were working in the Phuket area when the Tsunami hit. Since many were not registered with the Thai government, they were skipped over by the flood of relief aid.

When we initially travelled there in Feb 2005, we met thousands who had run to hide in the jungles so as not to be caught and returned to Burma. They were living in mosquito and malaria infested forests, under pieces of tarps and shacks made from wood and metal scraps.

There are livelihood projects and job creation initiatives going on, but most still live hand to mouth, and any relief we bring in will go to good use.
