Its a reality of the world, we have to throw the towel in eventually... I suppose to his credit, what else did he have to prove?

Anyways, What an awesome athlete, what a fantastic role model. What more can you say.

He will be a huge loss to world swimming, hopefully Aussie Swimming will utilised him better, than NZ Swimming did our own Danyon Loader.

Since when did you stop appreciating the the abilities of a tremendous athlete. Tiger Woods, Lance Armstrong, Valentino, Michael Schumbag, and this is from only the current generation of athletes. What about the athletes from the past... Ayton Senna, Babe Ruth, James Broadbridge?

When we turn back the pages on history, its people like him that will be talked about. How they changed the face of sport. How they managed to take it to the next level.

Ian Thorpe, regardless of whether you give a shit about swimming or not. He was simply amazing! He was never beaten in the 200 or 400 Free's from the age of 16, he was a world champ at 15!

Tell me what's pointless about that?!?!?!?!

Fatjim is just trying to stir things up. He's obviously been having some sort of period lately with all the niggling posts he's been putting up.
I think he's a bit miffed about Ducati sending him a letter asking him to sell his bike because they didn't think he portrayed the type of rider for which their bikes were designed for and didn't want to see their reputation being tainted any longer.

I agree about Ian Thorpe being an awesome athelete.

people support athletes because the athlete brings them pleasure - it's not usually the other way around - but on the occasion it is, the athlete ends up competing without the desire to win, just the desire to be supported, and it never works. tyson is a classic example.

i can't believe thorpe is only 24! i was in sydney last year and swum in the olympic pool at homebush when he was there training. now i can swim reasonably well, and have a 5 years international swimming and 13x a week training history, but fuck those guys can move through the water!

That's a strange way to look at it mate, and hardly a good reason to keep going when your heart's not in it anymore.

I'm sure all those poor people he's 'letting down' will find another hero to worship....
