My Darbi Accessories catalogue says 428V 130... < that is a long chain???
I would think there is a 520 upgrade kit as 428 is more like a 125cc dirtbike sizing.

It's definitely a 520 TL.

Why dont you just count the links that you currently have on the existing chain....then you will know the length required....

Yo! Look up!

The chain fitments for your bike are in those links I posted. Brand doesn't matter.

Print it out and take it to a bike shop.

Hmmm..considering you may have seen me get down and look at the chain on that FZR ?....All i saw was a rusty 428 sized chain..I guess the Darbi catalogue is wrong as per my post on the previous page.....that being the first post to answer.?

I think i may have wasted my time starting around the time i woke up that day.

I will be sending a 520 x 120 RK heavy duty -thats 520 width and 120 links
This allows for any variation in sprocket size the last owner may have made.
You will need to feed the chain on and split it to suit the gearing you decide to run on the bike when you buy the replacement rear sprocket.

Why the big difference?

Cos of what speed we were doing?
Or the head on wind factor?

I found my fuel consumption was strange going down there.
But better coming back.

Goes to show what happens when sitting on a nice consistent speed going down.
Lets just say anyone would have heard me coming on the return trip (speed limit though built up area's,as you do)...The TL was booming and the suspension was working well at speed... I can not imagine riding anything but a big Twin. :niceone:

Mate I could hear you when you were riding behind us......
That bike has one awesome sound.

Mind you we heard you coming from afar when we were sitting at MacDonald's at the Bombay BP awaiting your arrival.

I went throu more fuel on the way down than coming back...
hence me saying it was strange fuel consumption....
Never had that happen before...... so time to get the baby tuned up me thinks.

Maybe it was because you were going UP on the way back. You do know the earth is round and not flat don't you...and Auck's is 'UP' ..

Yith. Only the ignorant would speak of going down to Auckland. it is like London. always UP going toward it, no matter whence thou comest. So from Whangarei , it is UP to Auckland, and from Wellington it is UP to Auckland. And down to both from Auckland.

The chain the fzr takes is actually a 428x116. Just been on the phone to a few shops about it, so a 520 isn't actually the correct chain. Would a 520 fit with a sprocket change though?

Perseverence! Everything I read on google says if it isn't a 520 then it's a 428 BUT a 520 conversion kit is THE WAY TO GO. Get 520 sprockets to suit the chain Frosty has said is waiting for you. Do you want them to last 50000ks or 20000??

Ixion
24th November 2006, 08:19
Well, that is a fairly major difference. From memory , 428 is 1/2" pitch, 520 5/8". So they are not interchangeable the way 520 and 525 are. 428 won't fit on 520 sprockets and vice versa.

But there are conversion kits for some bikes to fit the heavier chain.

Take a ruler and measure the distance between the centre of the rivet pins on the old chain. is it 1/2" - then it's 428. If it's 5/8" then it's 520. A bit over 1/2" is worn 428.

But the figures for the number of links don't make sense either. Mr Frosty spoke of 120 links. But you are saying 116. Now the bigger chain would have FEWER links (cos each is longer) not more.

Count the number on the old chain.

Unless you are replacing both sprockets anyway. In which case just buy everything matching.

MSTRS
24th November 2006, 08:27
The number of links is greater than reqd on a FZR to allow multiple bike/sprocket size use. Unless the chain is supplied as a 'part#' specifically for a given bike, then this would be normal practice these days.
The chain conversion I got for my 1100 had a chain of 120 links - I had to remove 2 to fit it.

Just done a bit more calling around. Aparrently there's a conversion kit so I should be alright. Thanks for comin to the party with the chain Frosty.

He will appreciate the acknowledgement!! To be sure on the sprocket side of things, take your old ones in to compare the centre hole size & the bolt hole spacing, and the spline on the front one. Shops have been known to be wrong!!

I was working on the assumption a NEW set of sprockets were being fitted to go with the New chain--
To avoid any chance of a fuckup I'll send a 120 link ---Yep it WILL need cutting down (standard practice)

confirm please that the BIKE SHOP --actually looked at the bike/sprockets/chain and on viewing confirmed it was a 428 chain
I have in stock 428,520,525 and 530 so supplying any of the above wont be an issue

It has a 428 on it at the moment, which is why I was confused. Everyone I spoke to said something different! Some said it needed 525 with conversion others said definately 428.... Then Frosty sent me a PM asking me to find out what size it was as he could send me one and I got TOTALLY confused!!! But all sorted now. I can fit a 520 as long as I get a certain type of sprockets...
