View Full Version : "Bikeless" Blues
After being without my sickle for over two weeks now I'm well and truly convinced that being "bikeless" sucks the kumara BIG TIME!
I suppose driving the cage has been beneficial because of the cold temperatures we've had, and coincidentally it has been school holidays so the traffic has been lighter - yeah right?? Still takes me over an hour to get home from work on our beloved AK motorway system!
The shop tells me that I should have my two wheels back mid next week, so I guess my time of sorrow will end then. :crybaby:
Question: How do you handle being bikeless when it's against your will? :brick:

You post threads expressing your anger at every little pissant thing said behind your back. Then you get offers from great people offering to help with extracting revenge on said shit heads.

You should try FOUR weeks without a bike.
At this rate my wife will be kicking me out of the house again. :sweatdrop
I need to get back on it for ALL of our sanities.

My solution was to test ride as many bikes as I could without feeling guilty or embarrassed. Since my threshhold for both guilt and embarrassment is quite high, it worked quite well.
Then, having bought another bike, the next step was to rationalize keeping the first one, so that never again would I suffer withdrawal symptoms. No problem...
So now it would have to be extremely bad luck for me to be completely bikeless.

I sort of sympathise with you Zed, I can only ride my bike on fridays and not at all during the school holidays as I have young kids at home then, but as for coping with the bikeless blues, well I look at each day as whetting my appetite for when I can get on and go for a blat. It giving you perspective think of it like that :sunny:

Well i am well practiced in the art of "having no bike" as mine is constantly getting repaired etc.... I think the only thing keeping me sane is the fact that i ride a beast of a CT110 nearly everyday.... and also the fact that im going to enjoy getting back on my bike...... YES I GET MINE TOMORROW MUAHAHAHAHA..... :devil2: LOOK OUT TS IS BACK ON THE ROAD BEING A MOBILE CHICANE........

yep - ive had those feelings before zed - problem is it was when i was on holiday for 2 weeks some years back, all i wanted to do was get back home and ride to work even! (woulda been on an old crappy bike too, i just loved commuting even!)
Trick is just buy a whole load of old bikes etc! then as one dies/gets crashed u jump on the next :D ive always had a father to fall back on and steal a bike off etc :D (even if it is an old lump)

Yep, that's always a good Idea. We've (me and my bro) had about 4-7 bikes in the garrage most of the time. At the moment, we are on 4 + a rolling frame.

Suck indeed, i feel for you man, i was without my mobile compresser for a good part of 6 months when it dropped a valve, apparently the first TLS to drop a valve anyone else out there had that problem?? But hang tight man, i'd like to put a shout out to the boys at welly motorcycles and of course WT for helping get back on my bike, BIG UPS :niceone:
Life without bikes is not worth living, hence why i'm ticked up to eyeballs and above just to have a bike and every cent i earn goes to the bike.

Sounds like a perfect solution.... Now, with a two year holiday coming up in Europe, I wonder how many bikes I can test ride in that time? There's gotta be a lot of bike shops out there so plenty of opportunities for repeat tests of the same model without looking suspicious...
Try ten years. The involuntary twitching has almost stopped.
In the past I've had spells of 2-3 years off bikes not a problem...but currently I am really enjoying my riding and being without my machine for even one week has been really rough! The hardest times are when I'm sitting in peak hour traffic and watch the sportsbikes filter past, and also on the weekends when you guys are out there lapping up the countryside while I can only imagine how much fun you're having. :weep:
Btw, I don't want your sympathies! I reckon we all must go through this eventually.

I'm not sure if Mike was being too serious, but personally I will only test ride a bike when I am preparing to buy - test riding for any other reason would be a breach of my conscience! Besides, a 20-30 minute test of an unfamiliar bike could never replace the special union that I have with my own pride and joy. I am desperate only to ride MY bike and no one elses. :spudwhat:

Well other than swinging my leg over my RSVR in storage I've not ridden since I left NZ in Feb.
I've just started a paying job doing a 6 week rollout of windows 2000 and have no home of my own, so I guess it will have to stay that way for a while longer....and then it will be getting on for the english winter. :argh:
I guess I'm just treading water so hard I don't have time to mope about the bike.

If one stops for any reason I still need to keep going.
...Trick is just buy a whole load of old bikes etc! then as one dies/gets crashed u jump on the next :D ...
Nah, I can't justify having more than one working bike in the garage let alone having the storage space and the money to register and maintain multiple machines...all "just in case" of emergency. The exception to this rule would be to become a collector of bikes, but that's not for me - yet!
On reflection I'm starting to think that being off the bike for two weeks has been somewhat beneficial to me??

Your bike was still rideable, though, wasn't it?
A few crashes ago I did a full insurance claim on the FXR to get it looking minty fresh again. Parts took six weeks to arrive ex Japan, so after the first few days of carpooling my way to work and general misery I called the shop and asked if I could just pick the bike up and use it until the parts arrived. They were fine with that.
Of course, if the accident rendered your bike unWOFable without the replacement parts, that'd be a different matter. But I would have asked the shop if I could've had it back in the meantime, otherwise.

The shop gave me the option of riding it until parts arrived but I declined because the front indicator & fairing mount were damaged beyond repair. Also, because I contacted insurance immediately I felt it best to leave it in the shop just in case the unthinkable happened.
Ps. Car/bike troubles have always been a major pet hate of mine! :argh:

being bikeless does suck when you're not just using it for the commute. I very rarely spend any time sitting in traffic while driving a car but when I see the bikes going past it just makes me want to get back to mine and get some lane splitting therapy!

Well funny that you should say that cos all I ever here from people is how bad the VTR cam chains are
A mate of mine sold his 02 TL as it was time for something new. The only probs that he had was a oil leak that wouldent go away, the shop kept telling him that the cases were over full of oil :argh:
A week after he sold it the bike destroyed itself in a big way, all to do with the leak (I'd have to sak him what went wrong as I cant remember)
Now the other TL that I know of that did the same thing, well it is actually a Cagiva Navagater which has the TL motor in it (std).
Its funny how these things happen yet its not mentioned much....exepct for the bloody Honda cam chains :brick:

Third party fire and theft insurance, Zed.
A fair bit of time, and about $900 in total, and the bike still looks pretty tatty at the moment.
Goes all right though, and thats the main point.
Oh well, with three kids and one on the way, and one income, paying huge amounts of child support, and family court lawyer bills, coupled with a nasty big power bill this month, it's been a real challenge to even get this far in four weeks. Still don't know how I came up with $900, but trademe's been a real help.
Still got to sell a few more things this week to pay for the mirrors, indicators, insurance and pay for my watch to be fixed ($260!).
Won't be falling of in a hurry again, that's for sure

And I've never been paid to play music. So I'm not sure if I count as a 'musician'. I don't even own a piano at the moment.

Yes Merv, was out saturday with some of the boys, having a nice blat down 22, got back nearly home, stopped to wait for rear guard, and found a stone had hit one of the vanes causing a pin hole leak, rode home and pulled it out that night, hope its fixed within the next few days so I can go to manfield to support the KBers this saturday.

1988 Gibson Les Paul Custom (white)
mid-80's era JCM800 1959 Marshall Head (both inputs bridged, Soltek 12AX7 input tubes and matched EL34 output tubes)
