Saw this bike in town yesterday... Had to stop and have a look cause I've never seen the bike/brand before...

Its a Gilera 180cc

It looks to me like a Street Magic on steroids...

Do they make any sports bikes?

Yes they made a 500cc single sportsbike in the mid 90's called a Saturno.

Nice looking machine too.

yeah personally not my taste...

On the picture I posted you can see a little better...

The rear brake... looks like the pedal links directly to the rear caliper... interesting...

Yeah PF, they are quite known for the Scooters they produce...

The bike you saw yesterday is the DNA, me being the shortie I am think they are quite cute to zip around town on...

ahhh... thats a better picture... as I mentioned they look to me like street magics on steroids... which is why it caught my eye "gee... thats a big street magic" and it wasn't... was also surprised to see it was a 180cc... not a common cc rating...

I was commenting to Sam that one of those might be kewl to play around on and pull wheelies and stoppies (I'm assuming its possible cause I've seen guys on street magics doing that...)

How much are they? About $3000?

Which was just a recycle of a famous name from the 50's and earlier.

In the 50's they had a 500cc in line 4 which was a serious GP contender. It was a glorious era for road racing. The plucky Manx Nortons and G50 Matchless's up gainst Johnnie foreigners techo Giliera 4,s, the MV tripples and 4's, The Moto Guzzi V8 etc etc.

The Saturno was a BSA Goldstar equivalent except RARE and now very very expensive.

The later bike is actually a very nice bike and what the Yam SRX600 should have been IMHO...

I used to have one. They are fun around town, and not much good for anything else. You won't be doing any wheelies, a single cylinder and a centrifugal clutch takes care of that problem. Stoppies might be ok, the front brakes (brembo) are good enough, but the forks are softer than apple pie. I never tried...

There's at least one in Hamilton.

Tony Mac races a Saturno in BEARS down here. They were a very trick bike in their day, I used to have a magazine article on them. Pretty much hand assembled from top notch cycle parts.

texmo had a gilera runner 180. That was fourstroke and had no problems doing wheelies on that, if you look hard enough through the site there are pics and even videos...

Which can't be said of course without mention of Geoff Duke http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoff_Duke

In recent times in this country (in the early 90's that is) how many remember the exploits of Simon Turner on the Gilera - he was so fast on that thing when I first saw it I couldn't believe it when I saw it was only a single cylinder bike? With Uncle Keith looking over his shoulder I watched him whip the engine out of that bike and replace a blown head gasket at Masterton one year and that was the first time I'd seen the bike and saw it was a rather simple looking watercooled twin cam single cylinder engine. I'd have to search for my photos of that bike.

http://sx205.com/images/gilera1.jpg

yours was a four stroke right? or was i wrong and yours was a two stroke?

edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilera_Runner

i'm confused...

i read a website that said they used to be 180cc two stroke but are now 180cc four stroke but i cant find a link for it, i remember yours not being able to go much more than 120ish? Yet that wikipedia thing says they could do 160kmh.

texmo
25th November 2006, 16:09
I ment four stroke, not two stroke. I ment to say the opposite of what you said, In other words no mine was a two stroke not a four stroke.
Just because the speedo goes up to 160km/hr dont mean the bike will do that, mine did 134km/hr I think on a GPS.
There never was a 180 four stroke made, the 200 four stroke came about later on becuase of new emmision laws, the DNA180 was however a four stroke.
The gilera runner and dragster both had the same motors. Standard out of the factory they could do 0-100 in 6 seconds. 16hp at the wheel, which isnt bad for a CVT trans. With a Fabrizi kit you can get them producing around 38hp at the wheel.

Apparently we've never bumped into each other :-)

Lovely bike. It runs on smell of gasoline yet is fast enough to get you a racing slip from a roadside cop.

Head down to Scooter E-Motion in Mt Eden (behind TV3 off New North Rd) to see what the owner (Goetz) has in stock.

The way he explained it to me was that all the italian scooter makers are pretty much owned by the same crowd. Piaggio are the luxury arm, Vespa the most recognisable and "trendy", and Gilera are the more sporty marque (he used to race them in Europe apparantly). Some seriously funky designs too.

BTW, Piaggio own Aprilia too and their new "Mana" bike with the automatic transmission was designed by Piaggio.
