$150 Warrant

Hey folks,

Flatmate just informed me that the bike shop her bike has been in for about a month (waiting for fork sliders to arrive from J pan) just rung her mother (dealing with her mother, as it's out of town) and said they had done a warrant (work not requested) and that it would be $150. What is the correct response (i think i know).

A WOF on a bike does not cost $150.

But was that the WOF done and work done to make it up to WOF standard included in that cost?

Thanks, I'm not going crazy, will check out whether they did any work to bring it up to standard.

Either way though, the work certainly wasn't requested, and they have already made themselves unpopular with eternally growing estimates and time lines.

Has anyone here ever refused to pay for work they didn't want done, but was done anyway. Where do you stand legally/form wise.

I was chatting to them ahead of time re my clutch needing work and also how much for a service to be done.

Went away to think about it...
Rung up and booked it in for the clutch to be done.
I was supplying the oil for it as they had to dump my old oil.

They gave me a loaner bike and when they rung up told me the price.
WTF.......!!!!!!!!
The mechanic had assumed I was getting everything done re our chat.
He hadnt looked at the book......

FREE service done on my bike.

They never charged me as it was their mistake.


So only ever pay for what you have asked them to do.
They should have written it down in the book as well.

you have the right to refuse payment for work you did not ask for but they also have the right to put bike back to how it was (ex- take back new parts and put old ones back in

If that's why their trying to charge for an unrequested WOF. Refuse to pay and register a complaint with LTSA (whom I assume govern those who perform WOFs).

Chances are though it's just a misunderstanding. So don't jump off the deep end before finding out. It's always best to deal with these matters in a calm manner. It gives them the oportunity to back down or correct things without making them defensive and/or spiteful.

Assuming that the fork sliders were the reason the bike failed a warrant check in the first place and as you don't say where the test was done'
A/ the bike shop orders the parts
B/ stores the bike for a month.
C/ fits parts, checks out the bike and issues a WOF.

And all this for $150. I reckon she should pay up and get the bike out of there double quick before they re-check their figures

If someone has carried out repairs or maintenance that you did not ask for then you are under no obligation to pay. That's my understanding.

But whilst that's what I understand the law says, getting the bike back if you don't pay might be another matter entirely.....

WOF can be a bit tricky. It depends what you asked for.

Scenario 1. You/however went into bike shop and asked them to give the bike a warrent.

This gives the bike shop an open checkbook. Bad bad idea although any decent shop would not take advantage of it.

Scenario 2. You/however took your bike to a shop and asked for a warrent CHECK.

The shop is only entitled to check to see if the bike is warrentable. If it is they will issue the WOF. If it is not they should return a report to the owner.

If, for whatever reason, a warrent CHECK is requested and work is carried out then that work is not chargeable to the client. Pickup the bike and thank them for the work they have done. Pay for the warrent check and move along.

How about before you post a thread like this you find out the proper details first.
Instead of posting YOUR own view on a public forum, so everyone can share their view of the laws etc goinf from YOUR view.

Im not having a dig, or defending any shop, im just saying be fair and find out more detail before acting.

Thanks folks, you've cleared up a few things for me. Especially the difference between 'get me a warrant' and 'do a warrant check'.

Sorry i don't have all the details before posting.... but i wanted to have a bit of knowledge on my side before anyone rings them. Not to go off the deep end, but just to know as much as poss before straightening it out with them.

Its happened before...

Taking parts back out is really not feasible, as then you spend more mech time, putting it back to the way it was... Find out more details, $150 all up could be a bargain

Had my bike in at a shop the other day for specifically fork seals and front wheel bearings, turned out the wof guy from AA had got it wrong and the wheel bearings didnt need replacing, but steering ones did. I think they did me right, bit bloody expensive at $420 all up, Invoice says they stripped forks, cleaned and inspected them, fitted new seals + fork oil then reassembled... i assume that entire process comes under what i asked for in wanting just the seals changed. Expensive as it was, the bike handles much better than before, and its sad seeing as its now sold :'(
