At the end of a Marshalling day an individual has given up a family day[or ride day], worked hard putting up barriers, spent the day in the hot sun watching others enjoy themselves for what?

They get a free feed and heaps of drinks to drink.

I did it once, and I was given a bag full of yummy food (breadroll, cakes and fruit). Bottles of water and other bottled drinks.

If you ran out of drink you got hold of them on the head piece and they then delivered you some more inbetween races.

At the end of the day there was a beer or two to drink or cans of coke or lemonade. They also did a BBQ at the end...... so you got bread and sausages with the drink before you headed home.

SPB has a point. Down here riders to CantyMC events get to race for free if they bring a flag marshal. The flag marshal gets free lunch and drinks and something towards their fuel costs. What I'm planning to do is pay 'my' flag marshal the $45 I would normally have paid to race, it's not exactly a high hourly rate, but at least they get a wee tax free bonus.

Sitting at the hairpin watching F1 and F2 hurtle into it, is good watching indeed. Then you get the monkeys like Lance Lowe, who, coming out of the hairpin, spies a camera, and promptly provides a nice photo op when his wheel leaps into the air, requiring him to stand up and correct it :Punk:

The classics and 2 strokes etc, sorry, not my thing, but I'll put up with all that, to watch the really cool stuff...

At the end of the day, the guys can't race without marshalls (or doing just what exactly some of the riders called their little "outings") and its something at least I can do, which provides benefit... so yeah.

I enjoyed my day at the races, more interesting than my usual Sunday fare.
Best seats in the house for free.

If they paid the marshals a proper wage the cost of racing would go up, by about a hundred dollars a marshal times ten points + depending on the track multiplied by 2-3 depending on the point.

I agree that there should be some regular paid marshals to "nurse" the noobies.

If you go down the paid route you also need to have properly trained first aiders and cover them for ACC and Liability Insurance. This would probably add to the cost by about $30 a rider.
