View Full Version : What do you do with a dead car? (Anyone want it?)

Ok, so I'm driving along and it feels like the gears are just wizzing around, with only a fraction taking and giving me any drive (max speed 20 or 30km/h). Then the smoke from the engine and/or under the front of car starts to make it hard to breathe, so I find a quiet parking area and stop to see what's wrong. I have a small feeling the oil pouring out from the engine all over the parking lot has something to do with it.

With this cars track history (purchased for $950, major service up to safe standard of $1300, small service on radiator $200, $700 stereo added), I've decided to pull out the stereo gear myself, and find a suitable tip to execute the bitch at.

Then I'll look for another car, and start again, this time with a nice Jap girl, who'll love me long time... The only catch is I've had to park the old car in a conspicuous part of an area I wouldn't dump my rubbish in. I'll be lucky if the stereo is still in the car by tomorrow morning (I've taken the face plate, and covered the rear speakers to make it look empty).

Any ideas of places that take cars that need heart/lung machines (Probably just a transmission overhaul or something similar). Or maybe buy as scrap metal? And lastly, would I get into shit if I set the car alight at the tip?:Punk:
I don't know if I want to tow it all the way to the tip leaking oil:shit:

*EDIT - Lower Hutt Area*

Tough break. Is there anyway of getting it towed to somewhere safer ??

Different market I know , but should I tell you about the '87 Mazda Famila I just bought for my daughter for $260. $200 for warrent including service. And then the person I bought it off puts 3 months rego on it :)
Couple of nights doing things like flush radiator, replace resistor in fan circuit and now even the Air con works !! All good at 147K. I guess the difference is my car still looks a bit older than yours but ..... it is still going :)
Next time buy Japanese

It was actually an Opel Kadett renamed and imported for the NZ market. Not very successful, I might add.:bye:

They were the first Korean car imported into NZ badged as a Pontiac to fool the NZ public into thinking they were of a superior quality. Strange you dont see many on the road now, wonder why?

I didn't know Opel was a Korean brand, lol.

Was it a Daewoo or an Opel?

It was GM's "world car" and was sold in Korea as the Daewoo LeMans and in the US and NZ as the Pontiac LeMans. Possibly imported from Korea but not too sure.

yep, Daewoo.

made from plastics even 70's Skodas and Ladas would be ashamed of.

mate had one, always tales of woe about something new that had crapped out... actually, reminds me of my Peugeot in that regard

Opel refused to let their name be used on them.
You could see if PickAPart want it, otherwise throw a streetkid in it and set fire to the bastard (car that is).

Buggar not a good look at all.

This isnt the car that you were talking/thinking about buying a little while ago was it... someone told you it was a great car to buy.........

Have you just lost the sump plug which has caused the oil to pour out....
Maybe get another sump plug and pour IN some oil and see what happens.....
it may spring back to life again.

When did you last do a oil change in it... was the sump plug done up tight?
Maybe it wasnt tightened up tight and it has shook/vibrated itself loose......

Just a suggestion.

Funny you should mention that. I was thinking of recreating the infamous KB'er stationwagon jumping video that was shown at one KB rally, back when the thought of bikes lit my eyes up...

Maybe put my old bike helmet on, and drive it off the Takas? That should be survivable?

I'll leave it where it is until I sell it on Tard-Me (no typo), for $1 reserve or something, I guess... I'd pay someone to sort all the shit out for me! (almost)

Yeah, I'm gonna spend a bit more on a decent jap car, put some accessories in it, and THIS time try not to drive like a tosser.

Stonechucker; just ring the council, they will come and collect it and take it away for free - its a new service to prevent people dumping cars illegally in the lower Hutt/wellington area.

Well my ol' Mitzi Mirage is classed as a NZ made car and NOT a jap import.....
Ok it is made in 1988 but back then thats how cars were classed.

Now the newer cars are classed as jap imports....

Yeah, I'd like to, but even if I wanted to, I don't think that would happen anytime soon.

I'll post what I got up tomorrow, for those that are interested.
Pretty cool, for a "run-a-bout"

Ahh the "Poor Old Nigger, Thinks Its A Cadillac".. horrible things.. mate of mine brought one once, had it a few months, then got his mate to do a dodgy as all hell repair job on it and sold it as fast as he possibly could.

Had all sorts wrong with it, the entire power steering assembly was held onto the chassis with like 2 screws, the exhaust was mega-dodgy wlded to the manifold, was a death trap.

After looking for a replacement for my old Pontiac, to use as a run-a-bout to save wear and tear on my main car, the winner, purchased from Wholesale Cars Direct Lower Hutt, is a:

1997 Honda Prelude Si
Silver, Fwd
2200cc
32000kms on the clock! (AA verified odometer & condition of the car matches)
4 Spd Auto & Tiptronic
Climate Air-Con
ABS
Dual Airbags
Leather / Suede Interior
Electric Windows & Mirrors
Central Locking / Keyless Entry with Dual Stage alarm & immobiliser with shock sensors

36 month mechanical warranty (no claim excess, unlimited claims) on everything except consumables (tyres, brake pads, etc...).

The interior and exterior are spotless, it's almost too hard to believe. Obviously someone bought this car, and went overseas at some stage and phoned home after a while to tell family to sell the car. 32000 kms is peanuts.

I was planning on buying a smart version of the Pontiac, but when I saw ths car, the details and the price, and after a test drive and looking around other car yards, I had no choice but to take it. The car's price was only a couple of grand more than what I had in mind (what I had in mind was quite a few grand more than the Pontiac though). Obviously the mechanical warranty and alarm were extra on that, but since it was more valuable it was the only option.

Great car to drive too, it gives you a small/relative idea of what an expensive supercar would feel like / sound to drive. It is fairly low, has a rather stiff chassis, a phenomenal exhaust sound, especially over 4000rpm, and is a lot quicker than I thought. It's a tough call which car to drive:mellow: All I gotta do now is put in a decent sound system (I think I'm going Kenwood), and I'm sorted...

Now, I just gotta get a run-a-bout for my run-a-bout:shit:

(Next entry from me on pg3 follows on from this...)

Thats a run-a-bout ????????

Very noice indeed.

Flaming heck if you saw my car....... oh thats right its only used as a workhorse now..... not a run-a-bout.......

The last 3 pics... The mirrors are folded in on purpose, theres a mirror park button...

I'd definitely recommend Wholesale Cars Direct in Railway Avenue, Lower Hutt.
Obviously they try to sell you a car, but not in an offensive, pushy manner like some dealers. I found the experience after I'd accepted the vehicle offer, as one of the best I've ever had. They were the friendliest dealers I've met, and they are interested in you, not just your money.

They were also happy to fit my spinner on the wheel for me (not for burnouts, for one handed driving!). I think credit is due where it's deserved, so that's the reason for my review.

hey StoneChucker,

who bled to death in the interior?!

nice car - hard to find in that condition (usually some lowlife has lowered/tinkered/thrashed them)

enjoy.
