apart from being a dumbass, am I in the shit for reversing my car for a good distance in the supermarket carpark at night?, there where a some other cars about (including a mufti ), the cop went spastic at me, esp when I couldnt produce a license:o, in the end he said " expect to see something in the mail," and stomped off, I asked what it would be and if I could just get a ticket now, he just kept on walking.
so what can I expect from this?
whats the rules on traffic and cops in carparks?

I was just leaving work and it seemed a good idea, but the cops in pursuit around the carpark didn't think so, no drink here matey, ohh, no breath test either, it thought that would have been manditory for this sort of stunt
[edit] no weed either :(

Supermarket carparks are private property........
the carparks belong to the supermarket.....
hence them putting up signs stateing "they are not responsible/liable for any damage done to your car..." or words to that effect.
So you were reversing...... you have to reverse out having driven into the carpark space.
Not sure about if the cops can charge you for reversing in a carpark......
so good on you for asking the local cops on here for their advise on this situation.

and he took my details, I backed out of my park at about 0:05 am and decided to be funny and reversed for 150-200 meters around a couple of islands until I was out of sight, (after spending 11 hours on a forklift, it doesn't really matter what direction you are facing), I was gonna cap it off with a Starsky and Hutch type reverse spin thing, but is my lady's car, so I decided not to do that ,lucky.
anyways, when I stopped and turned around there was this cop there
"oi, what the hell d'you think you are doing"
"uhh, reversing sir"
"what"
(mumbles)"showing off officer"
I asked him if I had broken the law and he said "what do you think?"
so I started to tell him that I didn't know, thats why I asked, but decided to eat humble pie instead

LOL mate - that pie tastes like shit don't it? Good move though. The more you eat the less you and up swimming in.
Good luck.
Oh yeah, dangerous use, careless use of a MV, and possibly other stuff as a carpark is public property (privately owned, but public by virtue of the fact the public are all reasonably allowed in there/can expect to be found there).
Nothing serious though. Expect a tsk tsk" type thing... $100 or so (at a wild eyed guess)

Probably thought he had good cause to stop you, after all 150 -200 meters reversing in a car park could be considered "strange". Not like they would see it every day.
It is a requirement you carry a licence at all times while driving.
Give them a reason to stop you and they probably will.

Yes the cops do have authority on private property. You were not comitting an offence backing as per se but the speed of you backing may have drawn attention to yourself.
The ammendments to the Land Transport Act state something to the effect that a road is where a vehicle can access. Supermarket carparks are there deemed to be roads and the laws of the Act applies to them.

I understand why he pulled me up, fair enough, I bet it did look a bit strange I was just wondering what they could do me for, I guess it could have been reckless, but I dont think it was careless, or dangerous, like thet tow truck in cars says "Im the all time backwards driving champeen".
I forgot it was friday, and its a ricer hangout too, oops
as for the license, I would have thought I would have got a ticket on the spot, he never even attempted to verify the info I gave him was correct, not even a QV on the car.

How fast where you reversing? you should have told the cunt that you're a better reverser than he is at going forward.
BTW the coppers can get you for anything they want, everything is illegal if the coppers want it to be. It's called careless or dangerous.

$55 for failure to carry licence.
I suspect that when he saw the car he thought it'd be a bunch of kids and he might get them for breach of licence conditions. Or else a pissed driver. And was disappointed on both counts.
Hard put to construct any offence other than the licence one. Reversing isn't illegal, so unless the driving itself was dodgy there's no real offence.

Our patrol cars will do 120 km/hr in reverse. I imagine a ford would do much the same.

So is there anywhere you're actually allowed to ride an unlicensed off-road bike? Even on a private farm, the public can jump the fence ...
Is a closed-off designated area (like an MX track) the only option?

Apparently not. Even an MX track - since you are in there, public have access

But would the police have trouble proving it if they were to charge someone for a traffic offence?

It's "have access" not "can get into if they try hard enough".
EG. a cop can give you ticket on your driveway, unless you have a chain or locked gate accross the front ot bar access. Of course every cop will disagree, not just with me, but with each other. Seems they get there interpretation out of different weetbix packets.
