View Full Version : 'Riding dirty'

i lost my licence for 59kmh over the posted speed limit.
so now i have the decision to make:
obey the law and catch the bus for the next 27 days, and then maybe another 3-6months depending on how court goes
or
flaunt the law and 'ride dirty' til I get my licence back?
What would you do?
If i get caught riding with no licence its another 3months without licence and the bike gets impounded for a month at a cost of $470.
At current my bike is up for sale, but that may change if the court appearance goes well.

You got insurance on your bike? If so then get caught for riding whilst unlicenced and you can kiss goodbye to that.
Unless you live way out in the sticks somewhere then suck it up and take the bus mate.

Can you afford all those fines if you get caught?
If the answer is NO, then you know what to do.
Hey mate, those 27 days pass real quick.
See lets do the count down 28, 27 and tomorrow is 26.......

I'd just ride anyway and try and behave...then if I did get caught driving/riding DQ I'd suck it up and accept the consequences. But that's just me.
Few mates who lost their lisences just kept driving...strangely they never got pulled up either hahaha just lucky I guess.
One mate lost his for demerits, continued to drive for the 3 months without bother, then 4 days after he got his lisence back he lost it again for 50km over the limit...that made me laugh.

If I lost my licence it would be goodbye job/house/and immigration status if I paid attention to it so I would be faced with the choice of riding dirty or suicide.
Seriously though how often do you get stopped?
I've clocked up >10,000kms in Auckland in 6 months and not been stopped once by the police - if I'd been riding without a licence all that time I would therefore have come to no grief.
How often does everyone else get stopped? Or am I just lucky (or too slow...or both).

Ride the bus and nothing to tell KB.
Ride the bike and don't get caught and nothing to tell KB.
Ride and get caught and hooooo-boy, THEN you'll have something to tell KB.

Been there, done that...wasn't really worth the constant paranoia tbh.
Man did I shit myself a few times when I had to roll through wof & rego or alcohol checkpoints, or when I was riding sensibly and a patrol car lights blazing approached from behind...being in two minds about whether to drop 3 gears and nail it or move aside to let them chase who they're really after tests your calm...luckily I made the right choice every time
Insurance is the other big issue. Get in to a prang, even if not even your fault, and I don't think you'll have any ground to stand on. Your insurance co. won't back you up.

Choosing whether to ATTEMPT to boost, or stop and take the punishment would be a hard choice.
Luckily I have never seen any cops on the occasions I have ridden dirt bikes around the city. I'm not sure what I'd do until it happened...I keep my non-legal bike at the farm now and that keeps me more behaved...:scooter:

Honstly made its not worth risk long term, you are better parking bike up for 3-6months(whatever term ya get) or selling it which ever takes ya fancy.
Cause like we all know its not if, its when will you crash, get pulled over again. Is it really worth getting hundreds, thousands dollars worth of tickets. and lose of licenes. No insurance or expensive inusrance later in life.

Having seen many such cases whilst waiting in the court for many hours to say "not guilty", I must say I am amazed at how everyone who gets caught for driving whilst disqualified seems to get caught the first time they try driving without a license.
Every one has the same storey. It was my first time your honour. So and so never picked me up for work and I didn't want to get the sack, so i drove. I know I shouldn't have and it was my first time etc etc.
If I was the judge I'd lock the dicks up for insulting my intelligence (ok, ok).
Most seemed to get off quite lightly with a slap on the wrist. Mind you Gareth, being a single white male under 25, there is no hope.

3. Ended up loosing my license for 3 months and had the bike impounded on the spot  (and a big fine)

I will be getting my license back somtime around the august 2007 due to losing license on demerit points and have been caught twice riding without license. your disqualification period will be extended by a mandatory 6 months, you will also be arrested, finger printed and photo taken down at the local cop shop. Your vehicle will be impounded for a month and it will cost $500 to get it out at the end of the month. If you do not have the money to get it out it will be sold and you will end up with nothing. I was caught once by a car hitting me then the police were involved and the other time I was speeding in my car (61kph) I have not been pulled over while driving/riding at the speed limit. Its really up to you wheather you want to risk it. I still risk it and will continue to do so untill I get my license back.
dnos
27th November 2006, 14:54
I would leave the bike in the shed.
It's a big risk. But the biggest thing to think about is whether you would behave while riding disqualified. The main reason for getting pulled over is for doing something wrong, and only you can decide if you have the control to ride in a law abiding manner.
Or just keep the tank topped up and ready for a runner.
Up to you man.

The other issue to consider is cops trying you... I have had it myself, and know others who have had it done to them. The cop "tests" you as such, ie, comes up behind, lights flashing, or follows you, no lights. Or they are coming the other way, and pull a u-turn, just to follow you.
There is no way, during these events, it was anything but watching me/other people I know. Now, say I didn't have a license, and one of these things occurred. I would have almost no choice, but to run for it. If I have a license tho, I have nothing to fear. Not having a license adds another step of paranoia, that you need to cope with.

I dunno Gareth kinda a sucky position to be put in. If it was me, i would probably ride when i really HAD to, i.e. no joy rides, but when i did, i would piddle along at no more than the speed limit. However, by loosing my licence i would also be loosing my job, if you can rely on public transport,a nd it works in with your work, then i would just bite the bullet for 27 days man, the time will fly by.

I was on my way up Albany Hill at 6.45pm, saw the road was clear and thought F-it i'll open her up because it's clear. Basically 'cruised' at 130-140kmh through the twists in the road, it was two lanes and had no-one to share it with so used all the road on my side and didnt worry too much about the quickest line through the corners.
As i came over the hill past the BP i turned through the right hander and opened it up a little more, cop came round the next corner, slammed on his anchors and indicated... i thought he was chasing someone down into Coatesville Riverhead so didnt slow down straight away. Then i came to a large group of cyclists who were taking up most of the left hand side of the road so my thoughts of doing a runner quickly disappeared, i looked over my shoulder and just before i got to the road where my mate lives the cop came around the corner with lights on - so i pulled over.
He talked to me in a tone like i'd just raped his daughter, and was going on about how if I try to defend the loss of licence that he'll do me for failing to stop and dangerous driving aswell(because of the cyclists being there).
Just looked at the Transit website and im looking down a $630 fine to start off with. And because i was more than 50kmh over the limit i'm looking at reckless/careless/dangerous driving too. The courts will decide.
For the meantime its catching the bus... thats $16 a day... $320 a month. Catching the bus means leaving home 2 hours before work starts to get there in time, and leaving 45mins early to get home. Might look at getting a job closer to home so that its not such a hassle.
I've got the vespa in the garage to fix up for transport once the licence comes back, but a 'cruiser' has crossed my mind, perhaps a ducati monster 400 or something like that. As for the R6 side of things, still unsure what i'll do there, but probably end up getting a 600cc track bike later on, depends how my view of things holds up due to everything that happened on Sunday on top of starting the day off by losing my licence.

ok gareth, i lost my licence in old albany too almost 2 months ago on the thursday night kb ride. i had options of catching buses to work etc etc but at the end of the day its just so impractical and time consuming i decided i would just much rather take my chances and ride dirrty. so thats exactly what i did, for a whole 28 days i rode every day to work and back, no more,no less. no joy rides on weekends but as long as i had work on id ride. added to this i also stuck to the speed limit and road rules religiously because i figured it lessens your chance of being pulled over. yes everytime i rode that bike i did see at least one cop, this is part of living on the north shore as you would be aware. the paranoia was almost crippling and was hard to deal with it ruins the experiance and adds a lot of stress to life when you know what the penalty is for getting caught. so anyway after all said and done i did make it through the 28 days and now have a licence again. needless to say it will be awhile before i do 40+km the speed limit.
thats my story, ill not judge or say what you should do, i just hope my experiance helps you come to a conclusion with what to do in your situation.

Oh fine, just fine, they make funny noises and if they do it at the right time and you make sure you are not exceeding the speed limit then all is well.
Of course if no noise comes out of them at the right time and you are going faster than the speed limit then you have a very expensive fairing decoration - and in all possibilty a very expensive bit of paper called an I.O.N.

Were you counting on there being someone more stupid than you about? That's a rather dangerous assumption.
I wasnt counting on it, could have been someone stupid BEFORE me, or could have been responding to a drug bust/domestic etc out in Coatesville.
What else happened on Sunday? Did buffy turn you down again?
No something a little more serious and life changing than that, you twat.

A good friend of mine got caught 55kph over the speed limit. 28 day ban, then in court got handed a 6 month suspension and a $320 fine.
He did the first 3 months of the ban, then bought a new bike and couldnt help it. He's been riding trouble free and behaving (but yes giving it some on nice back roads), 2 weeks to go on the ban and all is looking rosy. Not one bit of attention from a copper, but he's always paranoid.

What did you get done for Lukelin? because you still may be hit with a 6 month ban...
I thought i was all good when i finished my 28days, just thought court was to decide the size of fine, but was just completely gutted to get banned for 6 months...

Well, I got done for 130 over the posted speed limit, fortunately the cop I had wasnt too bad, He wasnt too happy he was doing 170 and I was pulling away though, anyway he didnt take my license because he only did me for exceeding 100km per hour, I ended up with a 730 dollar fine, and suspended for 28 days, as well as 50 demerit points, I rode every one of those days, cautiously and to the speed limit and didnt get pulled over,
Since then I have got some more demerit points taking my total to 110, I have now lost my license for 3 months as of 3 weeks ago, I got my bike back on the weekend and have ridden for the last 3 days, I am in 2 minds over wether to continue doing this, At this point I think I will only ride to work and back, and on weekends maybe to a destination, I am strictly sticking to the speed limits and road rules and I do not intend to go for blats on back roads,
I dont really want to risk getting pulled over again and losing my license for longer as well as having no insurance but because ive only had my bike back 2 days, at this point im taking the risk...

much the same as cjade1 except i was doing 180, cop wrote it down as exceeding 100kmh and stated on the ticket speed as 160 cause aparantly anything over that and the judges go pretty hard on you. so hoping for a fine and no extra disqualification from riding when court time rolls around.

130kph over the posted limit, they'd have bent him over and ass raped him right there...
Mind you... I remember this time where the coppers tried to stop me, so I did this runner right, wheelied right over the harbour bridge, then they caught me, and I only got 25 demerits...

Simple really, ride the bike, have a car fuck up and you guys crash, the car driver dies, YOU GO TO JAIL
If it's a car v bike, it's more likely that he will die. Then we'll have headlines like;
SUSPENDED BIKIE DIES AFTER HITTING CAR.

When you lose your license this way, does it include your car license too?
If not, you could jump on a 50cc scooter for a month :scooter:

You only have one licence - one licence that contains details of all you other driving entitlements.
If you lose the licence for one kind of vehicle you lose it for all.
Unless, like me, you have a UK drivers licence too....

Pretty sure you're wrong on that one...
They ban the person from driving, even if you're on an overseas license... best that could happen is that you won't get the ban on your UK license, but when you come to convert it to an NZ license (compulsary after a year in NZ) then you'll get the ban then.

some cops can be vey forgiving. I have been caught doing 100kph over the limit and the cop took it down to 49 over the limit. (when you lost your license at 50kph over) But lost my license anyway cause the ticket put me over 100 demerit points.

Ahh, so good to have grown through the speeding stage 30 years ago, when the police didnt do traffic, and the Ministry of Transport drove Cortinas, VK Holdens and Honda CB360s, so you only stopped if you had done nothing wrong.
I remember being chased by the MOT. But ran onto reserve, so decided to stop and cop my ticket. (At high speed my XJ650 was only good for a few klicks on reserve, so I thought I'd had it.) Traffic officer pulled over, stopped his car and came over to give me a ticket. I could see he was going to throw the book at me, he was bright pink, sweating and clearly very angry.
Then I heard this rumble, We both turned around to look, and his ancient Holden had overheated, and was spewing water, steam, and making a ferocious rumbling.
I decided I'd been given a reprieve, and left the scene fairly promptly, spent the next week or two looking over my shoulder in case he had got my rego.
My advice for what its worth ?
The Gods smiled on you by letting you do high speeds for many miles without accident or incident. Don't push their generosity and sense of humour. Pay the fine, apply for the work licence if you need it, and see if you can't plan on enjoying your future motorcycling at sub sonic speeds.
Good luck and I hope the judge got a blowjob the morning of your hearing. (Err, I'm not suggesting you visit...)

Haha, yep thats one way of looking at it! I didnt have a good day at all that day. I'd decided the day before to slow down on the open road with my riding. Was just that the road was clear and was early morning so i opened it up for a couple of corners before slowing back down to near-legal speeds. Just so happened that after the 2nd corner a friendly police officer saw me and didnt agree with my reasoning!

Hmmm.... an interesting read. But here's a friendly English lesson for some of you once and for all. The document we all talk about so often on KB is called a licence. It's a noun. When it's a noun you spell it with a second "c"...that's licence. OK? When you use the word as a verb, ie: "I must remember to license my bike next month" then you spell it with an "s" ...that's license. Got it? Good. Simple really innit? QED :done:
