View Full Version : Licence demerit points

McJim

I seem to be hearing about a lot of licence endorsements - it sounds like the norm but then I thought maybe it's just those that get caught that shout loudest and that there is a silent majority that have never had a single demerit or fine in their life.

To test this out and see how widespread the targetting of Motorcyclists has become I've decided to put up this poll.

Notice I'm not asking if people are currently suspended coz that's none of my business - just if you've had your licence suspended from getting too many demerits.

I've never had a single demerit in the 'just over 3' years i've been here.. although my 2nd day driving, i got my car impounded and licence taken away for 6 months for 'apparant' boy-racing..

Had one ticket about a year ago, 115kph 20 demerits. First and only one in 40 years (admnittedly, demerit points weren't invented when I started).

Cunstable Kunt strikes again.

That was in a cage. I've never had a moving violation on a bike (touch wood) had to talk my way out of a few, though.

Haven't had any in years, only had one lot when on a 250, but most of my travel is in a cage now a days and I don';t ride my bike as fast as I used to

Been driving 14 years and never had a speeding ticket, a parking ticket, never even been stopped by the Police - either here or in the UK.

Could have something to do with my dad being an ex-policeman and my having so much fear over what HE would do to me versus what the law would do to me....LOL

Damn it's a boring life!!

(only been riding 18 months tho so there's time yet.....) :D

got done a few months ago on the way home from work, had just passed a slow van thing and was cruising back down to the limit.
open road 33 over 30 demerits

got some in the cage ages ago in a 50k zone but they have since disappeared

Done some dumb stuff on my bike but haven't had a ticket yet *touches wood*. Was lucky enough to get a warning once for a collection of offences.

I have gotten excatly 100 demerits, the man came and took my licence, but they have since expired and I have had 0 for about ten months (and counting).

Who really cares who got what.

Well you could always practice writing them out to yourself.

Up until this year I hadn't collected any but since moving to Taranki I've received two lots of tax. What really surprised me is the speeds I got done for would have previously got no reaction or at worst a flash of lights.

Dunno what points I have, but my last ticket was a couple of years ago so they should be expired. When did demerit points come in? I have never bothered with knowing how many points I have,if I have too many I'm sure they will tell me.

"Twas actually, "There is more happiness in giving than in receiving", but I bet you aren't really happy when you give them, eh, SD...?:innocent:

Only ever one ticket for 61 in a 50. Slight downhill, automatic car not quite watching the speedo creep. Early days of speed cameras, got caught on Gt Nth Rd, Glen Eden. No demerit points back then either.

Got done twice in a week soon after arriving in NZ on my UK licence:2guns: Took a while to 'adjust' to the slower speed limits here and then luckily they didn't transfer the points from my UK licence to my NZ one when I got it:yes:
Since then I've 'adjusted' quite well - just find some quiet back roads and nail it!!

Never had any demerits. Karma pretty much has me overdue for some thou.

I'm pretty much a nana squid on the open road, I open it up a bit on the straights, but for the most part I'm pretty well behaved.

Only ever once done a runner from mr plod, went past a car on the side of the rd, saw it pull out and the sirens come on (didnt even realise it was a copper till then), looked down and saw i was doing 147ish, went bugger thats insta loss of license.. floored it, weaved through some traffic and buggered off down some side roads. Ever since then I try very hard to stay under 140.

I think the fastest I ever got my GN250 up to was somewhere just over 130 range, and that was down a sodding huge hill with a tailwind and almost no gear on the back.

'es a Pom, from Glasgow or Scunthorpe or some such place . . He's using "endorsement" in the old sense. We used to call it that too , before they invented demerit points. He means demerits. You gotta give him a bit of leeway, they're not too with it up there in North England. Could be worse, he could be Welch.

90 here and I ride slow. Just too unlucky. The biggest ticket I got was 151 but he booked me for 149 and spent ages talking about how he liked my bike. It was not long after that they changed the rules to 140 for loss of licence. Have to make it throught to may07 for them to run out. Slow summer this one.

When I was young and silly(er) I was pretending I was Mick Doohan on SH6 near Havelock (South), and got pulled over doing...$490 & 50 points!
Thought bugger! I will keep my speed down officer, honest.

Well I did, then 6 days later got nicked for 40 more when I had a moments lapse of common dog....

Gutted me, as I had to sell a really brilliant R/C car to pay for it all. (Yes, the R/C car was kin expensive).
Also I was on 90 points!!!!

Well, as a lesson is learnt, I never speed on main roads where the good Policemen can get you. I had enough of donating to their morning tea fund!

I got a few more 4 years ago after getting warnings of impending speed trap from fellow Brass Monkey goers (who were off for a ride away from the site).
Yep thanks guys, BUT I couldn't see my speedo needle if i was doing less than 80mph (due to tank bag being full).
I thought I must have been doing about 55 mph, and the policeman hops out of his car and pulls me over.
I thought sweet, must be breath testing, no worries there...
Well, apparently I was doing 112k....
Sod it!

Anyway, no more tickets for me until 65 days ago. (Yep, I know 65 days, 'cos I just paid it).

I was riding along battling the wind, when I thought about how I control the wing ('cos people always ask, and I can't give a positive answer). Classic mistake, take mind off actual job of riding, and try to work out what exactly I do subconsciously....
I was thinking that the cross wind was a real blasty one, and I have no problems. Okay, what is it I'm doing to control the bike...
Is it sitting to the side of the seat??

Well, then out of the shadow this while car comes, and the red and blues light up. Car does a U turn, and pulls me over.
Well, it seams if you are in a 30kt cross wind in the Manawatu/ Rangitikei area, the best way to combat it on a CBR 600 is to ride at 134k.
Thing is though it costs $300, and 40 points if you get caught!!!

So, that is why 250's get blasted all over the shop... They can't do 135 in a 30kt cross wind.

I had a good cop and didnt lose my liscence for that one... 50 demerits tho

McJim
27th November 2006, 19:27
I don't understand exacltly what your saying, licence endoresments are like classes on a licence i.e 1 = licenced to drive a car, 6= licenced to drive a motorcycle and they also cover any special vehicles you are approved to drive.

They have nothing to do with your demerit points??

That sort of pedantic response certainly goes some way towards explaining the results of the poll. Thanks for playing :)

Clean at present, but got 2 warnings (back when they used to give out warnings) and 2 tickets in a month. It was a very quiet 2 years following. It woudl have been 3 tickets and 6 months walking (or riding very discreetly) except where I had to pull over wasn't safe so he told me to get going, and I was very lucky, etc.
One of the 2 tix was in a car, and I KNOW I wasn't going that fast (120). Not a cop I woudl trust - shifty little bugger. Other ticket was a fair cop = ruakaka straights, GSXR750, young guy coming back from girlfriends place, etc. Glad he wasn't there the previous week where I was going at "get off and walk speeds"

Im not being pedantic dude, your talking about licence endorsements and then asking if people have had demerit points....which have nothing do with each other...

I see a bit of it has been edited now however it doesnt take a brain surgeon to figure out you dont get "endorsed" with demerit points.

That would be like having a kick in the nuts for winning a raffle. Or vice versa.

They do in the UK, Used to here too. If you were convicted of a traffic offence your licence (the old paper book ones, before the lifetime paper ones) had a coupon pasted into (the "endorsement") that gave details of what you'd been convicted of. So a traffic cop (was MoT then) could see your history from your licence. Remember, radio was non existent or very crude and limited in range then.

They still have a similar system , I think, in the UK, and the term has continued. Still hear it sometimes here too from older people.

Link to explanation of the Pom system http://www.lawontheweb.co.uk/crimertoendorse.htm

One advantage of the endorsement system was that it enabled, eg, employers to instantly see whether a driver had a clean drivers licence (clean, cos no bits of coloured paper stuck in ti!)

um.... i guess i best go apply for it first huh! the next 3 months saw me producing my english one and when asked how long i'd been in NZ i used the last entry date ( i travelled overseas alot for work )

just goes to show what a working computer system can/could do for the boys in blue..

hahaha! turn about is fair play. I rode as a bike courier in Pomgolia for years on my international licence. The law told me a few times to get a bloody Pommie licence but I never did. Eventually a cop took it off me and I immediately applied for another.

worked from Cardiff. For Urgent Medical Supplies deliveries the cops gave us a roll of stickers to wear around our waists; needless to say we used those for quite a few other jons. With em we could do whatever speed we liked and the law didn't care. Sometimes, when delivering bottom secret computer tapes for the MOD, we'd even get a police escort!

In the good ol days, your points expired so many months after you got them. I think now you have to have two years free of points for them to go. So most of us cheerfully rode around with "almost full" licences, just going slow when one more ticket meant you would lose your licence.

nah, the way it works is that each and every ticket drops off your licence after 2 years.
if you get three good ones in a week you're screwed for 2 years and have to tread very carefully.
if you get 2 in a week and then 1 more after 1 year 11 months, in a month the other 2 will drop off and you'll be down to 1.

Thanks everyone that responded. Interesting picture showing that the majority of people have been pinged at some time or other. I'm still in the minority of people that don't ride fast enough to get pinged.

I wonder if it's because the Police are targeting bikes or because people riding bikes speed due to a belief that that is what bikes are for.

time will tell.

I've had a total of 70 in my more than 20 years of driving/riding. One ticket in the car for going through an orange light, and one on the bike for doing 123kph along the Himatangi Straights on a quiet Sunday morning.

I've had a couple of warnings in the car, but I don't ride that fast so tend not to attract notice on the bike, even with the numberplate L00CE!

I first got a licence in 1967. Had one speeding ticket (no demerit points in those days) in 1970. Then absolutely nothing for 36 years, despite having driven/ridden at least a million miles in that time, safely, if not always within the posted limits. Then within the last 3 years, 3 tickets, each with 20 points, all on the bike.
Targetting, anyone??
