Bulge on rear tyre

Well, it looks like I'll be getting some new tyres for my NSR ... I stopped at the service station on Friday night to check the pressures (trying to beat the U2 traffic) ... and found an odd bulge on the rear tyre.

The bulge was around the size of a new 50c piece, stood about 50mm out from the tyre, & was slightly roughed up. I rode it home, carefully, but will be replacing both tyres shortly.

This came as a (fortunately painless) reminder to check the overall mechanical condition of my bike more often. I am curious though ... what could cause such damage?

Internal Belt snapping at a guess.

What brand tyres are they?

God alone knows ... whatever was OEM fitment; I'll check tonight when I get home.

The bike used to be my wife's, has been ridden only around 10,000k since new. It sat pretty much unridden for a year until I sold my GSXR, got a fresh WOF & Reg for the NSR, & took it to Pukekohe.

Since then I've commuted a couple of times on it, lastly on Friday when I noticed the bulge (the second one; the first I'm dealing with by diet & exercise).

Ok. well if they are oems, they will most likely be some IRC's or Ching Shin.

They are crap. The best tyres for your bike would be Dunlop TT900s.

THE TYRE HAS DELAMINATED, GET RID OF IT, next will come the burst and you dont want to be the one riding it when that happens

I am curious though ... what could cause such damage?

Lots of things, improperly repaired punctures, cuts in the tread area, impact break, least likely is a manufacturing fault, very rare but they do happen

Yep it does, I fitted a new front for a customer the other day, when I tried to balance it I could see it was not running true, there was a fault in the tyre and I had to send it back :angry:

Oh yes, don't worry about me replacing it - I nursed it home gently, & intend on riding it once more only: to the shop, slowly, to have the tyres replaced.

Although I didn't know the likely causes, I figured that anything that could cause a bulge like that probably means the tyre is rooted.

I'd say they are IRC's.

Same thing happened to the GSX's (250) front. Had 10000k on it, and it was poo.
Noticed as I was preping it for sale. Just dropped the sale price a little....

There is better rubber out there than IRC, and funny old thing, it doesn't last as long. But that is the idea.

Same thing happen to my front tyre.
It was the original Pilot Sport with 10000Kms. The rear was near fecked anyway so I replaced both at same time.
Gave me the willys. Imagine if the tyre kept stopping in the same place where the bulge wasn't visable :gob:

Yeah, I have resolved to check the condition of my bike more frequently, and be a lot more vigilant when I do so.
