Dirt tyres

Righteo . . . time for some new rubber (will be doing both front and rear) for the CR, so looking for opinions here folks. I ride a fair bit at Woodhill, but would like the main focus of the tyres to be dirt/mud riding. The CR is not exactly set up to go easy on the rear, so it will need to stand up to some abuse. I'm pretty twichy with the throttle which is like a light switch at the best of times, so the back tyre tends to have full throttle or none at all for most of its life.

Anyone got any suggestions for what to try? Or (just as importantly), what to steer clear of?

I'm going to be phoning round a few places over the next day or two to get some prices, but it would be nice to have some idea of what I'm keen on before I get sold into something I'll regret.

You really cant go wrong with Michelin MS3's or MH3 rear MS3 front

Whats the difference between the MS/MH? Just checking them on the Cycle treads site, but the ms wasnt opening. MH seems to be for hard terrain, so does that mean M Hard and M Soft?

I like my set of mellvills in teh sand but like you saw teh rear has been eaten already. I'd definatly reccomend the mellvile front. The rear was going strong till i took it on a ride in gissy where we had to go down roads and stony river beds. Apparently they are a mitchellen copy. Total MX sells them and I got a 4mm front inter tune while I was there. That thing rock! I can run it as flat as I like.

yes MH3 mean are Hard, MS3 means soft, i run MH3's everywhere, from mud/sand to hard pack, MS3's are really good in the sand and mud but wear a bit quick on GRavel roads and clay,

A good jack of all trades combination is a MT32F (pirelli) on the front and a MC4 (Metzlar) on the rear. The front tyre is designed for the mid to soft stuff but it is still great on the hard and gravel unlike a shinko etc which just turn into shaky handle bars on gravel and hard stuff. The MC4 while it is a soft is a really long lasting tyre and just handles all conditions superbly. I personnally will never match the front tyre with a MT32 rear as they have shocking sideways traction and with how you discribed your riding, it wont be much help. The MC4 has heaps of sideways traction. I also dont like the MC4 front, it tends to let go when you're riding along the edge of steep hills etc.

Remember we're in summer right now so you could go to a dedicate summer tyre been hard (like a MH3) which will be longer lasting then a soft (ie MS3), but in the winter the softer tyre is far superior and can make the difference between a good day and a bad day.

Alot of it comes down to personal preference which you wont really know untill you try all of them!

i have tthe ms3 on the rear of my 426 it gets a hard time but allways seem to get the traction when needed also ran this on rear of my cr (lots of go fasts xtras) and it never let me down on that bike either.

MC4's run circles are the MC5 in the wet! Trust me!!! Been there done that... The MC5 maybe better in the dry but it doesn't compare to an MC4 in the wet!

MC5s are Way better hands down wet dry hard pack whatever.. MC4s just shred knobs or clog up and they only last half a ride
Cant go wrong with S12 mich' or MT32 pirreli

I've heard good things about the S12 but my one on my RM250 just shreds knobs and I've only been riding it at Woodhill mostly. It must be spitting them out on the tree roots cause I cruise on the gravel section to save my tyres.
I've had good luck with the Pirelli MT320 on the KTM and it is hard wearing and does not spit of the knobs. Very long life and works well in everything I've tried it on, and corners well.
As for front tyres, I'm looking for recomendations myself.

Well, I've got some MC4's coming based on some very good feedback from two guys I regularly ride with, also on 250 2/'s so presumably they should fit my riding too. I'll let you know how I get on.
