WTB:Learner bike - 250cc

After a bike to learn to ride on and commute to work (pram to palmy)
pretty limited budget, id prefer around 2 but could stretch to 3 if i had to. Would prefer a sports style but im open to options.
Wellington/kapti/manawatu area.

Your commute distance rules out the GN. Your budget rules out most of the other 2fiddies.

I ask, because I've been thinking about selling my NSR150 ... see here (http://www.solopassion.com/node/1678) for some shots from my first (& so far only - two careful owners, fully-synthetic oil only, only dropped once :innocent:) outing at Pukekohe on the thing.

A friend of mine (hi Aaron, if you're here!) bought an RG150 as his first bike, & used to commute on that between Wellington & Palmy on a regular basis. I've taken a few trips to Palmy & back on the NSR, two up, with my wife. While not exactly comfortable, it'd beat doing the trip on a GN, hands down.

Yeah you'd be stretching it to get a good 250 for $3k even, but if you or family member has any mechanical skills (and a bit of cash), that opens up options, as there's often unfinished projects/crash damaged bikes for sale, saw a tzr250 for $950 on TM, just needed some electrics work.

it doesnt have to be a 250 no. Just needs to be able to cruise at 110 ish and not be too bad to sit on for an hour each way. Its my first bike so i dont know a lot about fixing them but im handy with a spanner with cars. Also prefer 4 stroke as ive heard they are more mechaincally reliable and i will be do 1000kms a week

And don't forget gear too... Helmet, jacket, pants, gloves, boots will set you back at least about $700.

I'd say save up a little more and get something decent, otherwise maintenance will turn around and bite you in the behind. Especially if like me, you're not sure of your way around them mechanically...

Or hire-purchase from a shop?

I may be selling my GPX soon.. it's not the prettiest bike, and it has a few problems here and there:

Paint doesn't look that great
Tank has a slight leak in it
Electrics need a bit of work

Basically, it battles to start sometimes, and doesn't like idling, and it's missing 1 mirror, but the rest of the time it's perfectly fine.. Will probably be looking around the 2k mark for it..

Ps.. I've spent around $1800 on it, got receipts and stuff

Not selling it right now though (waiting to hear if i get a new job first)

Some people (me) have no disposable income whatsoever - it's all swallowed up by Mortgage/Bills/Food/Insurance/Fuel etc.

If I enter into any further finance agreement - I'll go bankrupt.

If I can't buy it cash then I can't buy it. I suspect many other New Zealanders are in the same position.

Don't get a 250, get a nice 400 or 600 single/twin. yknow, something sensible and durable with a decent price tag...
