I had my first out of town ride on Sunday.

I'd met up with an old school mate a while agao and discovered he also rides, so we aranged an out of Auckland trip.

Headed up to the Puhoi pub for a cold drink, and further up to Warkworth for lunch.

It was good fun. We're both learners and proudly displaying our L badges to boot, but that didn't stop up from crusing at around 100 most of the way. But I can't help but feel that I would have liked to have been going a little faster.
None of the corners seemed particularly sharp, and I never seemed to get much lean going.
My initial concerns about bits of gravel round the road edges came to nothing.

Can anyone recommend any roads round Auckland that you can practice throwing it into the corners on.
I had a go through the twisty bit in the domain on Saturday, but encountered a red Silvia coming the other way at probably 80kph on the wrong side of the road...so I'm not sure I'll head back there again

Can't help you with roads in and around Auckland, but congrats on your first out of town ride. My first ride was actually out town, and I loved it. I'm sure you'll learn to have a lot more fun in the not too distant future, but remember, speed isn't everything.

Practice on some familiar roads getting faster through the corners, 'cause that's where the real fun in speed comes - holding a quick corner speed, not fanging it down the straights.

You'll get there mate, just keep riding and keep the black bits down.

Try scenic drive out west, careful on a cold day of lichen holding water though.

Manukau, Clevedon to Kaiaua and back via the Hunua's or Ramarama.....West to Puke.Tuakau,SH22 south or out to Port Waikato...North to SH16 and Wellsford... There are stacks either side of SH1,just grab a map and go for it...

Good going on your first out of town ride. Nice one not putting it down. My first bike I ever bought was a suzuki 125 something or other 2 stroke. I was living in town, and working on a farm out of town, so my first real rides were out of town rides.

Then I got my gsx 250. I live in the 'Naki, and I bought it in Palmy, so riding it back from there was fun, even if a bit sore on my a:shutup: . Plus I didn't get home till well after dark, and that was only my second night ride.

My first night ride was back on my 125. And I was pretty drunk. I tell ya, its not something I'll do again. It was damn scary.

But anyway, keep up the good work. I am a learner as well, but if the cops don't see an L plate, and I ain't doing anything wrong, there ain't no reason for them to pull me over and check me out. Specially on the open road.

We have a place at Piha which we go to often and my comment would be that Scenic Drive aint no place for a play and to be "throwing it around" ...esp for someone just getting started. If you do decide to ride through there - take it the fark easy...Too many driveways, cyclists, peds, animals walked by peds, changes in road surface, gravel - and as K12R has alluded to, the road holds water big time especially on parts where it doesnt see any sun...and there are plenty of those places.

Go hard on the main highways and get used to being around cages and reading road surfaces and conditions before throwing it around some of the tighter stuff.

And good on ya for getting out there.
