As some of you know, Paul (Motobob) was involved in an accident while racing at Pukekohe yesterday (Sunday November 26th). As he was coming over the hill onto the front straight something happened to cause him to highside into the padded armco. Unfortunately his bike then ploughed into him as well. As a result of the accident, Paul has sustained multiple injuries mainly to his chest and spine - in particular his 3rd and 4th vertabrae have shattered through his spinal cord. Although the prognosis is not 100% certain, it is unlikely he will walk again. He does have full use of his arms and shoulders.
Paul is stable in the Intensive Care Unit at Auckland Hospital and is talking and knows everything that has happened - we wrote this post together. He is not up to visitors and won't be for a while, but he reckons he might be keen for plenty once we get him through the first few weeks of recovery. Obviously it will be a long hard road from here but Paul really appreciates all the thoughts and well wishes people have sent over the past 24 hours.
The biggest smile was when I told him he did a 1.04.30 lap before he crashed - his fastest lap ever by over a second - he was riding beautifullly. Paul will never race a motorbike again but if you can believe it he is already talking about wheelchair racing and the modifications he intends to do to his wheelchair.
Please, if you have any questions, PM me and I will try and reply when I can.

All you 'fast' young boys out there burning it up on your 250s, take note. This man was doing it right, at the right place, and still will never walk again. Bikes are a hell of a risk even in the right place at the right time. Don't put the odds further against you by running around at a million mile an hour through 'the loop' etc.
Really sorry to hear about your accident mate. That you were doing all the right things and still copped is sobering indeed. You're in the imdying families prayers.

Hi Bob, I met you in Murchison once. It was really bloody hot.
Sounds like you are staying positive, but here is a story I thought I might share with you anyway.
So this guy I know, let's call him name is Claus, was a psych nurse and was at some doctors conference in some.. place where you have conferences.
Anyway, Claus was climbing the stairs, and a whole ruckus of doctors were coming down the stairs and they all collided, sending Claus for a tumble down the stairs, and in the ensueing mess, one of the doctors trod on his neck and broke it. 'Kerrsnap'.
I think it was all respirators and shit for awhile, and then the 'you'll never walk or wipe your own arse again'. Now Claus in a previous life was ex Army (And fuckoff hard too..) and told the doctors to go away with that attitude. That would be the sorta yella-bellied attitude that would loose you a flying lead fight.
Anyway, yes, it did take years, but you wouldn't know his neck had been broken. He walks around as good as any body else his age, smokes like a train, talks crazy shit and is generally trouble for his suppliers like any other regular asshole.
Not saying you need to be an asshole though...

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts. I will print this off and take it in to Paul to read tonight.
A quick update. He has had a further cat scan which has confirmed the extent of his injuries and ruled out any bleeding from the aorta (main blood vessel leading to the heart). This means he is now stable enough to be transferred to a general ward in the next day or so. He will have surgery on Friday to stabilise his spine.
I will keep you all updated on here as I can.

Hey Paul.
I was shocked when Tex told me on the phone what had happened to ya mate. It was one of those moments where ya feel like it's a dream and you just want to wake up. One never expects something like this to happen to an all-round good bugger like yourself.
Still remember the first time I met ya at Puke a couple of years back. I cranked up the pace a bit 'cos I didn't wanna get overtaken by an old dude ;) That would've been some great motivation to have when I finally get my arse out in to F2 :)
It's sad that you won't be there for that, but at least you're still with us.

I was fortunate enough to see Paul on Monday.
As some of you are aware I have had cronic on-going spinal issues resulting in spinal fusion with more to come. PAIN is something that I live with all day, and before surgery last year was unbearable.
Jill believed my experiences would help Paul's mental battle.
I shared my knowledge with him on pain management and assured him that both his family and many friends wanted him well, participating in their lives again. Paul showed remarkable mental strength, being able to joke and accept his position with a steely spirit.
Thinking about you buddy. Stay strong.

I was loathe to mention this before (too early in the scheme of things perhaps), but after hearing about the 'modified racing wheelchair' plans, there is a paraplegic guy in the states who has converted his Gixxer to all hand controls, and adapted some hydraulic stabilizer wheels - it is on the DVD "Black Sheep Squadron" (the guy is pulling wheelies on it FFS) - I'm happy to send it up if Paul wants to have a look ?

Quick update
Motobob is doing well although they have put a chest drain into his lung because of bleeding there. He is in good spirits but obviously still really tired so not up to visits yet.
Surgery was scheduled for Friday but because of the lab strike this has been delayed - for Christs sake why don't they just pay them what they want - even if hospitals run into tens of millions of dollars worth of debt they are hardly going to close them down are they. Sorry, rant over.
Once the surgery is complete, there will be an approximately 4 week recovery period in hospital (if all goes well) and then he will transfer to the Otara Spinal Unit for rehabilitation. He will probably be there for 3-6 months.
The damage to his spinal cord has been confirmed and is as bad as we assumed.
Motobob reckons I'll have to spend some time working with him on how to corner in a wheelchair...:dodge:

Sorry to hear of this tragedy, all the best for the upcoming months of adjustment you are facing.
Puke only has a few places where gains can be made and unfortunately up to, and over the hill is both the most rewarding and at the same time dodgy section. I scare myself shitless through the left hander before the hill and the V8 supercar armco that has been put on th outside is in my view going to claim a life in the near future, however this is an important part of a good lap so you still have to send it through there...
NZ is a small place and motorcycle racing is not the "golden" sport here, getting changes made to a longtime existing circuit that was built for slower vehicles is near impossible with the limited cashback the owners and promoters stand to gain so for the forseeable future I cant see anything happening with this place. I have ridden on more dangerous circuits here and abroad, evn though Taupo has been recently upgraded you still have that short, dodgy runoff pit on the sweeper before the old back straight which has hurt a lot of people (are the bits of brick still strewn through the sand there?) but we still ride in these places because - thats all we have!
You could crash where Paul did 20 times and get up, unfortunately his bike followed him in and there you have it, game over.
So keep riding hard as you feel comfortable, be nice to people around you on the track and buy the best gear you can afford, you WILL need it sooner or later!

Just last night I had a conversation with a mate about this very topic. I agree 100% that there will be a fatality and still nothing will be done about the armco as it all boils down to the evil dollar! V8s bring in the big dollars and the safety of motorcyclists secondary to money. I for one will never race at Pukekohe and I dont think I will even turn up to spectate as I dont want to be witness to another horrific crash at the track.

Hi Paul - I'm SO sorry to hear mate (hope Jill already passed that on a few days ago). Hope you're surviving in there mate.
You know what would be REALLY cool - way better than a wheelchair?
A suped-up mobility cart! I've often thought about the cool stuff you could do to it, esp decent suspension... Oh hang on - a TRIKE!!! You could totally build/ride a trike once you're back home again. How cool would that be?!! All the controls could be altered to be used by your hands. I'm semi-excited for you now, despite this aweful situation.
But yep - hope the recovery goes real smoothly mate.

Brief update:
Paul is still awaiting surgery but otherwise is healing up all those injuries that can be healed. He is finding it a little frustrating to just be lying around but he realises that that is actually the best way for the multiple rib and sternum fractures to heal. He will need all the stability from those healed bones he can get.
Paul is receiving visitors so if you would like to know when and where please PM me.

Paul has his surgery scheduled for tomorrow so if people could either visit today or hold off visiting until after the weekend that would be great. As with all things, I will believe it when the surgery is actually completed so if it is delayed, Paul will be keen for visitors over the weekend. I'll post up here tomorrow once either the surgery is complete or it is delayed.
So, in case that was confusing, visitors welcome today, but surgery scheduled for tomorrow so wait until I've given the all clear before visiting.
Paul wants me to express his thanks to everyone who has visited, called or texted. As CaN says, he is in good spirits. He'll be needing lots of visitors soon to keep him busy though! Especially with Christmas and all.

Guttered for him / you,
I know someone who has been in a wheelchair for many years after a sporting accident. He rode around Lake Taupo in the Lake Taupo cycle challenge a few weeks ago.He enjoys getting out in his racing rig regularly to keep fit and active. You can get some real lightweight, high spec rigs these days.He has a new one arriving from the states any day now.
All the best with your rehab, keep smiling.(Easier said than done at times I know.)

After 24 hours in ICU he has now been transferred back to his ward. The surgery went well and now rehabilitation can begin. Paul should be up for visitors from Monday. Hey everyone. I am Paul and Jill's teammate and was there on the day with Paul when he had the big one. (In fact just behind him). We usually dice with each other on the track and on that day he was running hot. However his lap times were slower than previous ones when he crashed. So it wasn't that he was going too fast or beyond himself. It was just a racing crash, made worse by what Puke is like. The whole thing has been a big shock for me as Paul is not just a teammate but a bloody good friend. I haven't known him for that long but he is just one of those guys that you feel you have known for a long time and that he has been a mate since you were kids.
Paul was in a pretty rough way after the surgery (last time I saw him was in the ICU unit the day after). It sounds like it was a horrendous experience. Anyway I will be back to see him soon again and will be there to support him through all this and to whatever he wants to do afterwards.
The crash has caused a few rethinks about the racing and has also got me a bit mad about track safety in NZ. Some people say "well you can choose to not race there" but that is not the issue (and also for those young kids chasing sponsors just NOT an option).
The basic fact is that Puke is irresponsibly and unnecessarily dangerous. When you crash on a fast corner you should just slide. Maybe be a bit bruised but still able to get up and maybe even do the next race. You SHOULD NOT slam into a wall and then have your bike slam into you.
I don't want to give up racing. Doing it with Paul, Jill, Jonno, Shaun, Anthony, the late Bruce and the late Darryl etc have been brilliant experiences and I am addicted to the thrill of racing.
However falling off and hitting things that don't need to be there are not on. Street racing is a personal choice thing and nothing can be done about them, but circuit racing is a different beast and all of us should be pressuring for these things to change.
Cheers all for your support for Paul. He appreciates it.

Hey Jill and Paul - haven't been able to visit because I have an overseas guest (from the 15th!!) but you've been on my mind!! Good to hear you are up and mobile Paul, and over the surgery! I hope you have a comfortable and positive New Year mate. Planning to sneak away for a visit on the 2nd...See you then!

Yah I'm finally back online. Thanks for all the positve messages from you people. They really mean a lot when your stuck in a Hospital bed.The people that have visited me have been great and have been a great help in my recovery. Until something like this happens you don't realise how many great people there are on KiwiBiker. So once again thanks everyone.
Better provide an update on things. After those jerks in Auckland hosp tried to kill me again I've managed to escape out to the Spinal Unit in Otara. This place has an unusual atmosphere but at least the staff want to get you up and about. Starting to spend more time in the chair but Jeez have I lost a lot of strenght. This really helps the mind and finally allows access to PC. On weds the staff will return and then I'll be in Boot Camp. Relearning how to do basic stuff again. Pity I'm not cute like a baby which would play on the motherly instincts of the women that work here. Never mind we shall rise to the challenge.
See you peeps out there soon.

Welcome back mate. I popper in to see you a while back but you were sleeping. I'll pop out to see you in the next week - you want or need anything?

How are you Nigel. Yeah you can bring a couple of busty blondes and collect them the next morning :-) They promised me some when they asked me about special needs. You just can't trust the Hospital system at all "sigh"
