................before you would buy an alarm?

What percentage of bike value would you be prepared to spend on an alarm for your precious?

Eh alarms are for people who park in bad places.

It's not just a matter of value. British bikes and Harleys are nickable because they're desirable, irrespective of age. Anything smaller than 150cc is nickable because it's portable. For anything else, save the money you'd spend on an alarm and buy a disc lock. Your bike only needs to be 3% harder to abscond with than the one parked next to it.

Where are the bad places then...??

Pretty much anywhere in town, central, south or west from what i hear.

I am looking at getting an alarm for the gixxer, and that is only worth 12k. Would have to be a good alarm to stop someone knicking it i guess, bikes are very easily stolen.
I am looking at a way of passing live current, such as an electric fence to the bare metal, but realistically i dont think this would work, then there is always the young kid that will go all 'look at the m.bike mummy' and go and touch it and get a shock, then i will be in the shitter. Not such a good idea i suppose.

How good are good bike alarms? I know the one on my cage is pretty much theif proof, the only way that it can be picked off is to be taken othe back of a truck.

For me something would be better than nothing.

Leaving my Ginny somewhere wasnt really an issue (obvious reasons). But now getting a bike that looks more attractive to steal I feel I need to do something.

Just had a look at Cycletreads and they have an alarm at $499, then they have a massive range of Disc Locks in a varietry of shapes and sizes some of which come with shock and movement sensors and 110db audible alarms.

Might go and have a look tomorrow.

Can anyone recommend a Disc Lock brand?

In NZ bigger size sport bikes are not often stolen(not saying they are not but its rare) 250/400 you hear about alot, and harleys, british bikes(very easy to steal) and dirt bikes are the biggest things in nz.

I have leaved keys in my 600 in middle of tauranga, before, same previous 1100 and still there few hours later.

A disc lock if you are worried, if they want your bike that much an alarm is not gonna stop them

Think its more of a stop or slow down the casual thief, a determined pro will get it regardless of what you do

Yeah, I get paranoid when I leave my ride in Central. I have a disc lock and a cable for the rear to loop around that metal bar where Auckland Library is! I basically do it in the *hope* that thieves will look for an easier target :eek5:

Alarms only stop honest thives.. and slow down the determin ed theif... Where I live we hear car alarms go off regular... every time a truck or bus goes past... I could tell you the difference if it was set off from the truck or someone stealing it...

Van,stop, bike in the back,gone...A disc lock won't help much there.
I guess any deterrent is better than nothing.
Of course with the various power tools available (like top end Sabre saws) you could cut though a wheel, frame or disc in seconds to remove locks :gob:

Would look pretty suspicious don't you reckon :shit:

I don't think you're GT250R is really a prime target as is (no offence meant), I'd say that a simple disc lock or chain through the wheel would be all that is needed to virtually guarantee its security.

I got a Mongoose for $350......

thats a good price, did that come fitted as well or did you do that yourself - where did you buy that from, if you don't mind me asking.

I'd like an alarm, especially since I have moved office and my boss wants me to park around the back of the building instead of right out side his brand new swish entrance (oh err). Trouble is last week I the security camera was nicked off the bulding near where I'd park the bike!!!!! So I'm not exactly to thrilled about having it out of sight anymore. And this is in Epsom/Newmarket area - not exactly south auckland is it.

We do have some great footage of a big bloke ripping the camera off the wall before the cable snaps though....can't make out anything useful though!!!!
oh and the camera wa mounted 12 feet up on the wall, these guys just lifted a big bloke up and the fat bollix just swung out of it until it came away......

So yeah I'd pay up for a decent alarm, for all the good it would do - a BIG chain and heavy duty ground lock might be better.

When I lived in Dublin, I kept the bike in my front room of the house, it was the only way to ensure it wasn't nicked - nothing else would have worked - so we're not that bad here yet are we LOL

Hence the RF being a safe purchase...

Desirable? In the eyes of some...
Valuable? Not too pricey
Portable? Sure - with a Hiab

I fitted the factory Aprilia alarm to my RSV, it was a bit pricey ($750), but it was worth it in my opinion for my own piece of mind

Also when people ask if they can sit on it, its just funny when lifted of the stand, the alarm goes off, and boy does it scream.

Is it fair to say that apart from the odd "joy rider" most stolen bikes end up broken up for spares?

Why the hell doesn't the bike industry/magazines here get its act together and start a nationwide datatag/alphadot scheme. The readers are relatively inexpensive, could be issued to coppers, dealers and breakers. Bike thefts would decrease overnight. They even use them during scrutineering on track days back in Europe.

Being a tight arse I just stick a good padlock thru the disc....total investment about $10.

Might be something to do with owning cheap bikes too?

Do the fuckin numbers on it first.

Is it insured? What's your excess?

How much will you save on premiums/excess by having it alarmed?

Will it cost you more to alarm it, and lets face it, probably still have it stolen if they want it (yes, highly unlikely. It IS a yellow hyosung)??

I've parked my gixxer all over the place for the last year or so and it's been safer parked on the street than it has with me riding it. Bike theft (sportsbikes) really isn't a huge risk in NZ, unless you park it in Otahuhu or K Rd overnight.

Insure it with star, get those datadots for $300 and have not theft excess.

Fuck an alarm cos who actually listens to them anyway? Even if you do then chances are you'll be out of earshot when the fucker gets lifted.

And you wont have the problems that others have had with badly fitted wiring rendering your bike unrideable.

haha padlock through the disc???? who does that! Seriously.... o wait thats me! The padlock is about the same value as the bike! Or at least theives probably find the padlock more desirable than my bike.

Also Auckland uni is sounding dodgy-er every day.
A mates CBR250RR dissapeared 2 weeks ago. and ive heard of another mint CBR going walk about too. Lucky my mates ZXR didnt go missing too. It was parked right next to it. Both had the steering lock on
Only difference in security... the ZXR had a cable and lock through the back wheel.

In my opinion, something is better than nothing

You'd get in trouble even if a potential theif got a boot.

Man traps aren't legal in any way, shape, or form.

Would be funny to watch all the same.

In my case yes its insured and excess is $200. Asked if there be a premium change if alarmed or locked and the answer is no.

Still might get a disc lock just to give me a bit more piece of mind

Yep the PC world we live will have in jail for being so nasty trying to stop that baddy from stealing your bike while giving the baddy a slap on the wrist for getting caught:dodge:

Just get a Good soilid looking Padlock.

They look more 'unbreakable' than one of those disk locks with plastic on the out side....

Oh and its cheaper and does the same job just as good
