What falls under a covert mission?

Though mistakenly having the lights off without realising it seems plausable.

Titanium

140 - 180 is covert .......? yeah right!

This would certainly draw attention and be very dangerous for all other traffic around them, no warning of a fast approaching car.

A genuine mistake to stop pressing the accelerator when the little needle hits 100 ..... sure that would get the normal punter off a speeding ticket ...... "sorry officer ... it was a genuine mistake"

Thought keeping to the speed limit would be more covert ....

Probably just busting to go wees

January two years ago, i was coming through the karanghake(sp?) gorge just before paeroa. At the very entrance, a truck had rolled on a corner. All traffic was being diverted, however i somehow slipped through the gaps.

I had to park up and watch the action for about 20 mins before there was a gap i could squeeze through.
When i did, a cop car was on the other side of the gap, and we were both on one of the very first corners of the gorge.
I took off normally, the cop was right aside me and gave me a cheeky look.(I was driving my modded Nissan 200sx) and he took off in a hurry.
I took the chance that he was wanting to play games and followed suit. Sure enough, he was just taking the chance to thrash thorugh the empty gorge.
I did not have too much troubl ekeeping him at all, i fact I got to have a bit of fun letting the rear end step out in a few smokey displays!
He was probably going 130kph, i was touching a fair bit(maybe another 30 odd kph) over that when chasing him.

Got to the end of the gorge, and he flicked a hand and pulled over for me to pass. He stopped, i carried on my merry way, at the legal limit of course, and we both had had a bloody good time!

My deduction, sometimes cops just wanna have fun:rockon:

Yea brett they probably do occasionally. But i agree wit titanium about the convert op my arse.

I followed an unmarked car with no siren or lights at all from porirua on-ramp to kapiti at about 140k most the time, little more at times. So i followed made a quick trip, the only part i didnt follow was when he passed a truck on double yellows where ya actually cant see.

Just stupidity by them i think.

Agreed, i have seen them do some very dumb things as well. The thing that pisses me off, is that neither the cage nor either of my bikes are slugs, and any half decent overtake can easily throw you over the speedlimit, and then the buggers ping you for speeding, even if it is a perfectly visible, smooth awesome road.
Lets be honest, 140kph in a sports car with modded brakes or on a modern sports bike is not a huge speed.

More importantly. Did he catch the person who ran off with all your full stops?
Next you are going to say the open road limit in NZ is below 140kph - yeah right. Although at 180 he was close to exceeding the limit by 40 and losing his licence.

Toaster
28th November 2006, 20:23
I understand that they are required under policy to activate the lights if exceeding the speed limit. If you feel agrieved, then lay a complaint, but you need the rego and time etc. It may lead to a PCA. Cops are subject to the same road rules and can only speed if it is justified.... i.e. urgent duty... like getting Uncle H to the rugby on time.

Brett
28th November 2006, 20:38
Speedie is right, Police do not have to have their lights and siren on to go over the speed limit however you have to be careful how your doing it - if you crashed it and you were found at fault you would gete raped by the bosses and most likely fired.

There are loads of reasons we dont use them such as alerting offenders we are coming, enviromental reasons such as horses going by (though this would be rare), preventing futher injury to a victim if an offender reaslied we were coming, so burglars etc dont see our lights or hear us coming etc etc. As i say public safety goes first and you do have to be careful how do you it as speedie will also tell you.

Most of the cars up here now have AVL (GPS) and the comms operator knows what speed you are going and why you are going to it.

Makes logical sense IMO.

So they know if you're parked at Wendys or Burger KIng, (or somewhere more suspect). Killjoys! And we think our bosses look over our shoulders! Fancy your boss knowing exactly where you are and what your doing every minute of the day?All I have to do is fill in a daily running sheet and send it in with the paper work each week!

If it was after 6pm follow him home and BUST HIS ASS!

A little knowledge can be dangerous......

Is speeding on a motorway punishable by three years or more imprisonment?

Is it night time after 6:00PM? Not under the crimes act, it isn't night time until after 9:00PM.

But speeding is an offence under the land transport act not the crimes act so what constitutes night time under that act?

You'd want to be sure of yourself otherwise it would be your arse getting busted for assaulting a cop.

Na mate - same rules for all.

Plate place and time. Ring the station, get someone senior on the phone and let them know an official complaint is following. Explain you have a natural cynicism about Police enforcing their own but expect this will be followed up.

Have them contact you to confirm what's been done.

There are knobs working in the Police too... not many, but they attract their fair share - as will any industry.

I've had exactly the same happen to me (cop ran a red light - very bad example). One of the guys on here picked it up for me and got back regarding what happened.

No mess, no fuss. Good outcome and no need to make a song and dance of it.

That's my experience anyway

Speeding per se isn't an arrestable offence anyway. And even if one argued that such speed constituted dangerous driving, which is, if the cop was acting in execution of his duty - oh boy one would be in big trouble. Assaulting a police officer, impeding a police officer in execution of his duty, wrongful arrest , the list goes on.

What's the problem, anyway ? So a cop knocked off a few miles at a decent speed. Considering that the well nigh universal policy on this site is that speed , in itself , isn't dangerous, why the angst when someone in a uniform does it? Sour grapes, maybe, that he can have a better chance of getting away with it ?

Cop running a red light without his siren on, that's maybe a bit different. But they're human too, if he's busy steering the car, talking to comms about what he's going to , maybe he just runs out of hands to flick the siren switch going through an intersection where he can see there's no oncoming traffic.

Lighten up chaps.

People do tend to speculate - it's natural. I recall a cop I used to work with in Wgtn was on duty one day and he was 'seen' parking on a yellow line outside a bank - pulling out his 'bank book' from his back pocket to go do his banking after having performed an 'illegal' u-turn. The person ranted and raved about it in their complaint (after having recently been caught speeding... oddly enough).

That was responded to by the facts being presented... the constable was responding to an incident where a fraud offender who was presenting stolen cheques was at the bank. So the position he parked in was necessary given the urgency required in order to catch the offender.... his bank book was his note book, and the u-turn was perfectly legal where he did it.

So it pays to know the facts before casting stones. Given the comments above, I'd say it's fair to say we don't know the reasons why the cop was speeding, so lets not pick on the guy - regardless of policy/best practice guidelines (which I admittedly started to point out... noted!).

Another thought.... he may have been making haste to a job like a burglary, so needed to be silent and covert in approach... the light do reflect a great deal and sirens obviously give you away when trying to sneak up on the bad guys. There could have been plenty of reasons.

Any. I'm sick of retards passing at warp speed less than a foot from me. I'm talking about nice quiet roads on a sunday with enough space for them to go into the other lane.

Why can't the rozzers clamp down on that?

Ixion
30th November 2006, 18:29
Is that the horse that fell over ? It must be unpleasant though to be passed so closely, not to mention the danger of being hit in the face by the horse's tail as it gallops away.

Inconsiderate folk those horse riders, they should allow more room when overtaking motorcycles.

Well said Ixion. All coppers are human, and most of the ones I have had dealings with (on or off two wheels) have been ok. That's more than I can say for most of the MOT guys in Canterbury prior to them being absorbed into the Police.

i used to ride past horses every day on kaipaki rd with both the TL and busa, with messrs yoshi and remus chatting away out the back. i always slowed right down if i saw horses, but if they're over the fence and not being ridden, too bad. and i know the stable master, and he would often thank me for slowing. he'd certainly have words to me if i didn't.

however, if you ride your horse on the side of a state highway, then you should expect people to NOT slow down - not everyone was bought up in the country (or in NZ even) and appreciates the good manners of slowing for a horse being ridden.

Thanks for the sentiment, unfortunately while the majority think like you they are not the vocal ones - and I do admit the odd one in our ranks spoils the appearance of the rest of us - ce's la vie....
