gmail are web based email accounts, with 1gigabyte of space, there is a free little program around that makes it pop3 which is handy, so you can access via any normal email program.

The thing about them is they meant to have good spam, and nice big 1gb space

and rear as hens teeth to get hold of at moment

I have it but I've never actually used it. I'll check it out when I get home & invite you.

Hmmm...this may be a problem though b/c I can't remember what my user name is for GMail.

Scored an account tody for Gmail and have been playing with it. It seems good so far. 1GB of storage etc. The way they treat message threads seems pretty cool too.

Yep, I got a fabled Jim2 GMail account. It looks pretty good, and it isn't as bloated as soemthing like the dreaded Hotmail. I like it how it is easy to mark emails, and how they are treated more like conversations.

James Deuce
8th September 2004, 11:27
Interesting one, that one Gav.

There is nothing to stop any ISP storing all emails that travel through it's environs for later perusal by a third party, so it's a bit of a storm in a teacup. If you have an electronic persona, someone is already capable of looking at everything you do on the Inter web thingame.

When they link GMail accounts to a free-as-in-speech, open source IM network, Hotmail is really, really going to be in trouble.

I believe that that will be the next piece of the puzzle once GMAIL is out of Beta. Text IM at least, is in the pipeline.

It was a bloody clever idea of theirs to make gmail accounts invite only.
It makes them seem more special 'cause only people invited can get an account.
Plus invites means gmail users promote gmail as they look for friends to give their invites too.
And when someone is given a gmail invite, because it is in essence a gift, they are kinda under some obligation to show gratitude for the gift and are more likely to try signing up.

I too have some gmail invites if anyone wants one... ;)

I still have my six new ones I received just before Xmas when I gave the others away. I guess I'm just not giving enough away!

Interesting to note the inclusion finally of POP with gmail - I can now throw away my POP goes the GMail app.

Not too sure of why they want to include an SMTP option - doesn't that create a security issue allowing gmail users to use gmail as an open mail relay server for spam purposes?

This is a general invite to all members here. Gmail is googles own internet based email account (like hotmail). The difference is they give you a shit load of memory, there is no limit on attachment sizes and their spam filters are damn good.
You can't just join up however, you have to be invited by another member, after you have been a member for a short time they give you a number of invites to invite who ever you want, I have exhausted my friends and family and all of them are converts now, but the google folks just gave me another 100 invites, so I thought if anyone here would like an account, I could send them an invite.

Just PM me an email address and I'll send you an invite back, which you just click on the link and follow the instructions and off you go - one top class email account.

PS this is not some scam, there is nothing in it for me, just ask anyone who has heard about gmail, or type gmail in a google search and read what they say about it.

PPS if I do get alot of responses, I might wait a day or so and do a mass invite instead of dribs and drabs, so it might take a day or two to get a reply.

The way these guys are going I suppose you could.

Not only that but if you read your gmail terms and conditions of contract, it states somewhere in there that

Gmail invites may not be publicly advertised on forums, websites, newsletters.......

They rely mainly on word of mouth.
