Honda is to invest US$2 million to build a motorcycle plant in Peru. Operations will commence in the second half of 2007 with an initial target of making 25,000 NXR125s a year. In time, the new plant, to be based in Iquitos, will look to build 100,000 units per annum.
The decision to invest heavily in Peru follows a leap in sales of 35% in 2005 over the previous 12 months. Growth is expected to continue upwards with projected 2006 sales of 20,000 units (up from 12,000). As the Peruvian population and economy continue to grow, motorcycle sales are expected to follow suit.
