Just an observation I made the other day -

Royal Oak roundabout in Auckland now has these Cats Eyes installed (driving from Mt Smart rd end heading towards Three Kings) that when a Pedestrian walks across the Pedestrian Crossing (the one outside McDs), the 'eyes flash orange. I thought I was seeing things till I went through that intersection a couple days later, kept a closer eye on them and sure enough they have a LED unit inside them. They only activate while the Xing is in use, must be a pressure pad or infrared beam. Bloody brill idea, I wonder if it's going to be a NZ-wide thing or just for this particular Xing? It certainly got my attention and this was in bright daylight, must look preety good at night. Has anyone else noticed them?

I saw those when I was up for the U2 concert - very weird but very cool! Was wondering how on earth they worked as well.....

Its a pressure pad .... the yellow ones on the edges of the footpath and in the middle of the crossing.

Walked over it the other day with some friends and noticed it stopped flashing as we walked away so of course we had to go back to make sure we knew how it operated.

someone may well correct me if I'm wrong, but some of the motorways in the UK have LED cateyes on the road that light up and change colour. They are normal white when all is ok, then they can change to orange or red and flash to indicate roadworks or accidents up ahead, controlled by the CCTV centre.

I was heading up from mission bay the other week and spotted them in the road. Forgot to post something about it..

but yeah, I think they're putting LEDs in there...

So, does that mean we don't have to drive with our lights on? :stupid:

Pretty sure they had these in cats eyes going into the terrace tunnel years ago (Welly). The eyes would light up with the colour that the traffic lights were at the next intersection.
