View Full Version : Tributes to Uncle B

I can't believe I am posting this, my hands are still shaking. I was reading about LooseBruce and dss3 when a police car turned up to the house nextdoor, and our absolute worst fears are confirmed.
UncleB (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=1381) (ex VTWIN) has just been killed in Masterton (today, Sunday 3 December '06).
I don't have any details at the moment, and I don't think I could type them if I did, as my hands are shaking even more so now... Constable O'Leary of the Masterton Police Station has the details, and they will be passed on in due course, when appropriate.
RIP to a very good friend, an old riding buddy (who was with me when I had my serious accident 18 months ago), a neighbour and partner to our now widowed nextdoor neighbour. I sat with Bruce (UncleB) last night on his deck in front of a fire chatting away and planning our christmas holidays...
What a sad sad time it is lately. RIP

It seems the mods have graced me with the right of posting the facts. I am offended that just because they weren't the first to know, they took off my initial thread, even though I told them repeatedly that the family had ALL been notified. I'm not a new member, I have ethics and logic. I find it even more amazing that they removed all the posts in this thread pointing out that fact, as well as the posts from other members expressing their annoyance at the mods for doing so, before putting the thread back up.
My opinion of the operating methods of the mods have dropped substantially. I'm even more disgusted that this thread is where this had to be said. This process will need to be reviewed, so that senior members with the facts are not cut down like troublemakers
Anyway, to get back on to topic and repeat my first post, RIP Bruce, you will never be forgotten.

UncleB (ex VTWIN) has just been killed in Masterton (today, Sunday 3 December '06).
No way. No fucking way has UncleB been killed doing this. The UncleB?
For those who didn't meet him, Bruce was your absolute dictionary definition of a good guy. He was the first person I met 'of biker circles' as he led the first group ride I went on - one of the newbie friendly rides that were so huge, so friendly, and so absolutely superb round Wellington last season. He's well known as the newbie's best mate. Countless times he has rescued borken bikes and their riders; given neutral, correct and testosterone free advice; and organised countless rides over the last year or so. Literally countless. He always had a relaxed and delicately quiet manner about him with definate overtones of 'willing to have a good time at a moments notice'. Great bloke.
And he rode like a god. Not fast, necessarily, but like a god. If this has happened, and I guess it has, then it's a wakeup call for those of us who think that experience alone will be enough to keep us alive while on two wheels. I can't imagine what's happened, I can only imagine that it was entirely unavoidable ... and whatever it was, if it killed Bruce, it would have killed me too.
I need to think about this now.
Oh my god. No fucking way. RIP man, and thank you.

Bruce was the 1st KB'er I met in 3D. I was proud he chose me to be his mentor. I was prouder to be able to call him my friend. I will miss your humor, humility and unwavering support Bruce.
I was praying the universe would not take 3 friends in one Weekend, alas it was not to be.
This Weekend has been the blackest for all of us. I know all three would not wish for any of us to quit our passion on account of these tragedies.
All three spread light and joy where ever they went. Hold it in your hearts fellow KB'ers, for that is where they will live with us forever. Go with Love my friends.

Exactly, very well put. When I moved into the house nextdoor to him, he was very quickly at the fence, almost pleased a "biker" had moved in next door. From that day on, until my accident, almost every ride I went on was with Bruce. At that initial stage, I was a new learner and was thankful for the help and knowledge I got from him. As RantyDave said, right from the start you could see he was a good rider, I always dreamed of being as proficient as he was, and as safe a rider.
You couldn't meet a nicer guy, I was one of the guys he rescued when my bike got put out of action near Martinborough. He rode all the way back to Lower Hutt, got his car and trailer and drove all the way back to pick me up (although he joked that I made him miss a good day of riding). This leaves another big hole in my heart, to add to the one left after my accident took me out of riding.

Ah shit - this one hurts...
This is - bad. Bruce was a very nice guy. No - can that - he was a GREAT guy and this is indeed shocking stuff. The Wellington Motorcycle community - indeed Wellington fullstop has lost a true gentleman motorcyclist. One of the good bastards - It s become almost a cliche' now but when people say - a Mighty Totara has fallen in the Forset of Tane, this is what they are talking about...
Sad.......

I can bearly see to type. Bruce was a shining example of what the KB community was all about. Always helping others, often giving up his ride to go and get a trailer to collect a broken bike. One of the nicest blokes you could wish to meet. And a damn good rider. I always enjoyed his company and he was "Uncle" to many newbie riders. Rest in Peace my friend.
My sincere condolences to his family.

This is more bad news, the start of summer has seen some gut wrenching reminders of how vulnerable bikers are on the road. RIP and again, condolences to all those who knew him, and his nearest and dearest.

A black weekend indeed. The blackest I can recall. Things like this always hurt those that are left. But some hurt more than others. I met Bruce just the once in person, and a nicer guy you couldn't hope to meet. He will be sorely missed and will remain in the forefront of my memories for a long time.

Can't believe it could be true!
My gut is twisted and my hands are shaking too.......
Uncle B, The man who taught me all I know about riding and bike maintenance. The man I spent %80 of my rides with.
We've lost one of the greatest KB'ers today. Top bloke who was a top mentor.
Uncle B was more than a motorcyclist, he was a good friend whether on or off a bike.
RIP my friend!
My sincerest condolences to Debbie......

Hallowed be thy name

Thy will be done on earth

And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil
For thine is the kingdom
The power and the glory
Forever and ever

That's another Bruce gone to a better place, although far too early for one held in such high regard. As a fellow Bruce, and from the 'rapa, I'd be mighty nervous if I was home thinking about going for a squirt on my bike this weekend, I'm almost relieved to be at work.

Not sure what to say, Bruce put his hand out to mentor me, first night we met as total strangers and we talked bikes for about 3hrs, Bruce had an answer for all my crazy questions and advice galore for a noob like me. Hes an awesome guy whom i considered a great mentor and friend. He made a huge point about safety and was willing to help me out whenever i wanted. Im totally devastated to read this news and still deep down inside cant believe its true. I will miss him deeply.
My deepest sympathies to his family and to those riders whom he has touched over the years - he will always have a place in my heart and i will always ride with him mentoring me from above.

If I could hit the "Quote" button and copy all that has been said here then I would because it's at moments like these that no words can really express how you feel when you hear of these tragic events. So, having been on the same run today and despite never meeting Bruce personally, Mrs Ceebie and I can but add our sincere condolances to this sad list of posts. As for questioning if I should continue to ride bikes? (And for those who are).
Well the way I see it, UncleB, loosebruce, and dss3 lived their lives on bikes, and would never dream of denying us the pleasure of riding in life. So I am sure they are still wanting us to ride now, and they will continue to ride with us.

I have riden on many occasions with Bruce and he was a real inspiration right from my first group rides in Wellington.
He was always such a smooth, confident and controlled rider and someone who you would never see pulling a cringe-worthy maneuver. He was extremely competant but would always volunteer to be the tail rider if there were new riders in the group and never complained about it. Friendly to everyone and would help anyone who needed it. A great source of advice but only if the person wanted it. Generally awesome guy, the kind which is in the minority that give bikers a good name.
I cannot believe this has happened to Bruce of all people. RIP!

My first KB ride – so nervous – I’d taken my L-plate off specially and had one practice run on the motorway before hand. My GN broke down on the way to Martinborough - Bruce reconnected the battery for me. Then on a Wednesday night ride – I ran the GN out of oil at Kaitoke. Bruce road off to Caltex Rimutake to buy me some engine oil.
Since then he’s given me heaps of advice and improved my confidence. Just last week I broke the gear level off my bike and Bruce made me a home made one out of a bolt and some garden hose.
I will never forget.

Bruce...
You lead the way on my first ever 'Rapa ride. You lead me into the corner where I had my first crash (my fault!) and picked me up again. You trusted me with your SV1000 for my first 'bigger than a 250' ride...and you answered all my stupid questions (bike related and otherwise) without judgement or derision. You were the one behind me when I had the best ride ever over the Takas that Sunday arvo, and *you* revoked my nana status. You even used your own partners asthma attacks as an excuse for an 'sick day' of blatting around the Rapa with me.
You are awesome dude, and I'll miss you turning up on my doorstep on the chance that I'll be keen for a ride. I am the biker I am because of you...apart from the 'nana-ring' part :bye:
My feelings go out to Debbie and Bruce's family.

I pretty much missed the whole weekend sick in bed, but to log on now and read of the black weekend for KB'rs is sobering.
My condolences to all who have lost loved ones this weekend, the posts show the deep care you all have for fellow bikers and friends. I have only known most of you from this website but feel for the loss of those held in high esteem.

Am shocked and saddened to hear the news. Bruce truly had a big heart and was respected by all who met him - sort of guy who would never say a bad word about anyone or anything, just accepted things for what they were and got on with life. First time I met Bruce he had the SV1000 and I was totally impressed by the way he kept that thing immaculate, and had blinged it up to the max. Bruce loved his bikes, they were not just a commodity for him - we have lost a very special man today. Condolences to friends and family. RIP Bruce.

Jesus, that's awful news!!!
Never had the pleasure of meeting Bruce, but would like to thank him for his encouragement with our proposed move to NZ, and sharing with me in words the pleasures of motorcycling on NZ's roads with you guys. Wish I'd had the opportunity to ride them with you mate.

RIP Bruce heres one for you
Ride On Angels Wings
.....
Gone now but not forgotten
Forever in our dreams
Everyday the Sun shines for you
Everyday the roads are dry
The straights go on forever
The bends are as you dream
There are no more pains
There are no more worries
You will be there at every party
You will take part in every race
You will stand there on the podium
You will race with the stars
you will ride upon Gods pillion
And if Angels ride on Harleys
Then you will surely travel far
On Earth You were My Brother
And now you are a Star
so glide on heavens highway
And lead the train up front
One day you will be waiting
And together we will ride
Once more again as Brothers
The white line side by side

Like so many have said before, Bruce was one of the great people of this world.
This really is a wake up call and just goes to show how precious life is.
It has been said earlier that times like this bring into question a persons desire to ride, and I certainly had little desire for riding home this afternoon. But when I think of Bruce I can not imagine him wanting me/us to stop riding. He has taught so many here so much and while it may sound corny, he went out 'doing what he loved'. I am going to take this as his final lesson and I will be forever putting into practice his many words of wisdom.

I have no idea what to say... I haven't riden with Bruce since Stonechuckers accident but have spoken to him on several occassions. A lovely guy, heart of gold and a help to bikers in need of anything, from a lift home to mentoring.
Gonna miss you Bruce. RIP.

I have just read every post in here as I felt I needed to. I was not that far behind him when it happened, coming down the road to an obvious accident. I do not feel it is my place to say what happened as I did not see it. I will say though that he did not suffer. (if you know what I mean. Sorry never been the best with words and certainly do not want to offend)
We (about 4 or 5 of us) had stopped at the Mobil in Masterton for some fuel and then headed of to meet everyone else at castle point. Unfortunately we did not make it.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Debbie and his family and friends. I think what everyone on here has said is right on the mark. He was/is (again the wording thing!) a top man and I always enjoyed catching up with him.
Seeing him at the starting line of the sprints (giving up his time so we could all have fun!!) again the other week, he always had something to say to make you laugh.
Stoney I'm soo sorry as I know how you were with him. I wanted to reply to your text but you had said not too.
If there is anything I can do for the family please let me know and it shall be done.

This weekend isnt happening. Im going to wake up tomorrow, and everythings going to be back the way it was.
We did a bike swap earlier today. I told him how easy his bike was to wheelie, and how it felt great with that work that had been done to his forks.
He really did have a sweet bike there
The last thing he ever said to me was that he trusted me and my riding.
After i said sorry for wheelying his bike in front of him. He didnt mind one bit.
We have all lost such a good friend, and the biking world has lost such a great biker and mentor. On and off the road.
Im lost for words. Its really only just hitting home now.
Good bye old friend. Your in my thoughts always.

Bruce, we have only spoken a handful of times, but that was more than enough to know how much of an all round nice guy I was talking to.
It was only yesterday at the summit you were giving me a ribbing about how my bike is so heavy compared to the Jap bikes because it was made from the steel of old melted down Chevrolets. All in good humour, I wasn't offended mate, you put a smile on my face for a while with that one.
Man, I didn't know that beep and wave you gave as we moved over to let you pass on the way back down was goodbye.

Like a few other people, I'm having a hard time seeing well enough to type.
Bruce was the guy who taught me most about riding- I recently wrote him to thank him because I had a 'moment' when riding that his training advice saved me in. (Sorry, can't do grammar right now.)
He was a bloody good friend; some of you will know that I had a bit of a hard time earlier this year. Bruce was really supportive and put up with my crap like the true gentleman he was. (Was? What?)
Here is something he wrote to me then:
"Go for a ride this weekend and revell (sp) in the sights, sounds and smells that make this world unique.
That's what motorcycles are designed for.....taking you away from all the woes and transporting you into a world of free spirit.
Take care
Rubber side down.............promise.."
So sorry, Debbie. Please ride safe everyone- I want to ride with you all again please.

This week-end started off so well. For the Wellington Toy Run, the weather played it's part. An awesome day was had by everyone attending.
Then you log on to find fellow bikers have fallen.
Having just taken it in that we have lost 2 of the respected members from up North, I now come back on to find we have also lost what I'm sure most people on this site would agree with, the most respected mentor, riding companion and for some, close friend.
I have been lucky enough in life to meet some 'good' people. I have only talked to Bruce a couple of time for a few minutes at the start of a ride, but he took a genuine interest in what I had to say. In those few minutes, he made me feel at ease. On my first group ride, he gave me the confidence to overcome the initial nervousness.
From that short time of meeting and reading his posts, he gave me enough to consider him one of the best people I have had the privilage to meet in life.
RIP Bruce. We know you will be with us where ever we ride.

Only met Bruce once, when I was down in Welly and hooked up with the newbie ride, in the mist over the Takas , but I know the esteem he was held in by everyone, down south, in particular.
Another gentleman and damn fine rider clawed from our midst!

What can I say? Bruce was a great guy who made a big impact on my life. When I started riding again after a big accident, Bruce took me under his wing and turned me into a rider I never dreamed I could be. He was the real deal, a great friend. He always helped me out with a smile on his face. We were working on my race bike together..he really did like working on it and was really keen to see it come together. Times I just wanted to quit but then Bruce just got me motivated again. I really enjoyed working on the bike with him.We had a lot of great rides together and great chats over a good coffee.
Bruce was really good to everyone and most times I wished I could be a good a guy as he was( and rider, but that would be pushing it ). Rest in piece my friend. You will be greatly missed and I will never forget you. You’ll forever be the stars on my suit. Thank you so much for giving me the pleasure of being your friend.
My sincere condolences to Debbie, Family and friends. My hart goes out to you all.
I would also like to thank eveyone for their PMs,texts and calls of support. really appreciate it.

Bring on the bikie procession in his honour.
And I dedicate this also to the other Bruce, and Darryl. WTF happened this weekend?

You’ll forever be the stars on my suit. Thank you so much for giving me the pleasure of being your friend.
Nice words Andries......
I think the stars symbolise Bruce very well.
I have Bruce to thank for converting me to AStars too.
One things for sure, He did always have more stars than the rest of us - More Bling!!!
Well, Didn't sleep well at all, managed about 4 hours but can't manage any more, laying here thinking how we'll never ride the takas together again.
Never watch that super smooth motion roll through those turns with knee scraping.
Never get to do the Buller Gorge together - He couldn't wait to take us!
And never to share those personal moments with good conversation and good company......
I'm gonna miss Bruce so much! Had really thought it was gonna be nice growing old with you!:crybaby:
It's very rare that you ever get to meet a person that is so warm and inviting, so keen to help and make you feel welcomed.
But somebody so amazingly easygoing.
We have lost our most respected Welly member. He has touched many in the KB community,
His passion for helping others and for motorcycling is unprecidented. Uncle B's generosity truely made him a one of a kind.
I'm proud to have spent so much time with you Bruce, the pleasure was indeed all mine - I shall never forget brother...........

I met Uncle B on a Northern ride organised by Chris. He PM'd me saying "if you're going, I'd like to meet you." Being a smartass, I was naturally apprehensive - I thought I'd upset him in the past and that he wanted to clobber me. Instead, he shook my hand, had a beer and talked about stuff.

I only just heard about the accident this morning and I sensed all was not well in biker world. Bruce was a totally top bloke but what more can you say than has already been said?
My first KB ride was the TCWNR and I hadn't been on a bike for a while, Bruce made me feel welcome. He and the others made sure I could change lane in the traffic by slowing things down on that first outing and was always first with some good advice.
I'm totally stunned! RIP to the best kind of fellow biker, wish I wasn't saying that to Bruce.

Same. When i was regular here, i was in touch with Bruce (we both had the same model ride). Bruce didn't know me from a chocolate wrapper and still offered to guide me on a trip up north.
He went as far was sussing the local accomodation etc. I was blown away, and of all the KBer's i have not met, Bruce was #1 on the list of guys to have a beer with eventually.
I'm positive he will be greatly missed by many and won't be forgotten (same for LB and dss3).

It was 3 years ago last October that my brother was killed on the same stretch of road whilst riding with friends. His family received similar fantastic support from fellow riders and friends. Bruce, a neighbour to my mother, was also supportive and kind to her.
Here we are 3 years later lamenting another loss under similar circumstances. I had hoped there would not be another motorcyclist lost amongst that loose group of friends and acquaintances that can so often be seen at the top of the Rimutaka Hill.
It would be great if we can learn something from this latest loss and therefore prevent another. I wonder, if like me, Bruce's family will recieve the LTSA glossy newsletter some time after the event with relevant latest road safety statistics where, buried amongst the numbers in a column, is the number that represents your family member and friend.
My sincere condolences to Bruce's family.

Wow. I normally dont like to post in these threads, and I was shocked to just read about LooseBruce. However UncleB was another one of the few how I had frequently ridden with while living in wellington.
I have never been a fan of the group rides, you never know how much to trust other people on the ride. Riding with Bruce removed this, he always made you feel at ease and want to come back for more.

Yikes... this is the first time it's someone I've actually met...
Uncle Bruce led the 2nd TCWNR I ever came on, I had been on a bike about exactly a week then. We went out the back of Upper Hutt, then up the Takas. Coming down, the 250s left first, and knowing I'd hold everyone else up, I went down last, and predictably got left behind.
Then the bigger bikes came up from behind and I pulled left to let them pass. What surprised me then was that Uncle B then pulled in front of me to show me the lines, while the rest held back and just about escorted me down the hill! Way beyond the proverbial call of duty, and is probably the reason I've been on KB all this time...
Uncle B, you are a top bloke, and will be sorely missed... RIP...

I saw you at the pub a couple of times Bruce, we may have even talked but I never knew you were the UncleB. I haven't heard a bad thing about you but have head many stories of you giving mentoring and helping people with bike troubles. I was looking foward to riding with you one day but now I won't have that pleasure.
Rest in peace Bruce.
My thoughts and condolances go out to Debbie and your family. Let me know if there is anything I can do for you.

I didn't click to the name as I knew him as VTWIN and am now absolutely fucked as to what is going out there !!
He was a great mate to all rode, always friendly and cheerful and always there for those who needed a hand.
I'm nearly ready to put my beast back on the road and after over 30 years in saddle I feel truly saddened by the loss we have all had in one weekend BUT ... I will keep riding as they would have ... because it is who we are - a family of 2 wheelers who care for each other, sharing a common bond.
To Bruces family I offer my deepest condolences & to those who knew him better than I, be strong and keep the memory alive ... ride to live

Uncle B was the first real life person I met off KiwiBiker. he was the happy, friendly face at the Elephant Pond that welcomed me into the group at TCWNR. I soon learnt that Bruce was a very smooth character, both in temperment and style. I think he got just as much enjoyment from the participation of others as his own riding gave him.
I spoke to Bruce on Saturday, he arrived at the Summit, smile beaming from inside that tinted visor. He wanted to know if I would be coming out the next day, a ride to Castlepoint, with a free BBQ!!. Alas I had other plans, but was thankful for the encouragement/invitation.
There have been some amazing words written about Bruce in the past day or so. I think the most poignant (sp?) for me was the comment that perhaps we should all take up some of "the slack" resulting in the loss of Bruce. I think if we all try to emulate him in some small way, we will each be much better for it.
RIP Bruce.

Although I have never met you UncleB, what I have read here is infectious, so I have added you to my desktop until after Thursday.
Hopefully it will spread and others will also do something similar
I guess you are like the "Unknown Soldier" to me,
I do not know you, but know of you and that what you had achieved and did for other riders is a legacy that will continue for many years to come.
I am sad that I can’t share in putting down my passenger footpegs, as my bike doesn’t have any, but after reading what others have said, my handlebars are there to guide a novice such as myself around these twists and turns, and to take control of the accelerator when I am going to fast or two slow.

That cheeky humour and smile that made all feel welcome, including computer wanabe geeks keeping him up till the wee hours of the morning with billions of coffee and cigaretes.
I only knew bruce for perhaps a little over 18months but spent alot of 2005 doing most of my riding with, at the time, VTWIN. Seems I knew him for a lot longer there were soo many laughs and adventures.
Nicks radiator leak from Bruces SV. Helens accident (not so funny untill she wanted a smoke while the ambo's had her on oxygen). Coffee rides with Dapf out the bays. The scream of weasels 250 as she chased him up the rimas. Talking hours of bike bullshit, to name just a few.
Like many people on this site I spent alot of time following bruce because he knew the roads so well, he had such smooth lines and we trusted him. You didnt need to know Bruce for long to know you could trust him as a friend.
My condolences to Debbie and family (and the cats and huahua's) I can only imagine the degree to which his loss will be felt in your lives.
Thanks for the memories and friendship Brucie, you still owe me a coffee.

From what I've read on here, Bruce, I feel I know you now. This one's for you mate.
The long and winding road
That leads to your door
Will never disappear
I've seen that road before
It always leads me here
leads me to your door.
The wild and windy night
That the rain washed away
Has left a pool of tears
Crying for the day.
Why leave me standing here?
Let me know the way.
Many times I've been alone
And many times I've cried,
Anyway you'll never know
The many ways I've tried.
But still they lead me back
To the long, winding road
You left me standing here
A long, long time ago
Don't leave me waiting here
Lead me to your door.
But still they lead me back
To the long winding road
You left me standing here
A long, long time ago (ohhh)
Don't keep me waiting here
Lead me to your door.

Every post commenting on Bruce's riding emphasises his ability and his responsible attitude. Obviously a mature and considerate road rider saving his racing for the track. Does anyone know how his accident occured, as it is obviously a lesson for all that the most competent and careful can come to grief?

There have been a few questions asked about what happened to cause Bruce's accident. I was behind Bruce at the time and witnessed the whole thing. We had a fairly hard push on some previous roads and had stopped to refuel. After this we cruised towards Castle Point in a nice flowing pace. Just after the turn off to Riversdale the Castlepoint road gets a bit twisty. It is my belief that the relaxed pace resulted in a lapse of concentration as the left hander came up and caught Bruce a bit by surprise and he entered into it a bit hot. Upon seeing the car coming the other way he applied a hefty bit of front brake. This resulted in the front locking and the subsequent low side. He and his bike slid straight into the front of the oncoming car. The tar seal on that corner is in a bad state of repair and undoubtedly contributed to the loss of traction. Bruce died instantly and did not suffer at the side of the road.
As usual it was the result of many small factors contributing to a dire event.

Newpaper newbrief I read said: (letter for letter)
"He came off on a right hand bend in the road as he was heading toward Castlepoint about two kilometers from the Riversdale turnoff. His motorbike collided with a car"
Was trying to figure out how he could have crashed on a right without tyhe car being parked on the bend or on wrong side of road. Whish the papers could get there facts right.
See you guys tomorrow.

There have been a few questions asked
Thanks mate, a brave post and as the others have said, our sympathies and thoughts are with you and the others affected. Obviously many lives have been touched by this man and the posts reflect the esteem in which he was held.
My reason for asking was because we seem to need to know it was a freak or unexpected accident, something beyond normal control. KNowing this confirms that someone so respected was ridng sensibly and confirms our belief in him. Hope you guys can see what I mean, sometimes I'm not so good at expressing myself! For someone so capable to have this happen makes us realise how vulnerable we are.
SPman
6th December 2006, 17:35
Like a lot of accidents, a whole lot of seemingly minor things combining to make a terrible whole.
Thanks for explaining what happened - it won't undo whats done, but makes it a bit easier to understand.
What a shit of a thing to have to witness!
Our thoughts are with you and the others, as well Jim.
And all those who were with Darryl and Bruce.
