Balance pipe

Can someone tell me the purpose of the balance pipe between the exhausts on a V twin.

Same reason for the balance pipe on a vertical twin....or a V8 for that matter.Just allows a bit of ''stuff'' to go the other pipe when there is lower pressure there.Supposed to give a bit more bottom end....but I don't know,I took the balance pipe off my V twin because it was just too much hassle to fit one into the system,seemed to run just fine and dandy.
