Just a note here folks

It will NEVER replace training from Qualified instructors like the Ride Safe course or the 1 on 1 training people like TRICIA1000 are able to give you --- Frosty
PLEASE FOLKS THIS IS NOT A GENERAL OPEN RIDE -IF YOU WANNA SHOW OFF YOUR MONO SKILLS DO IT ANOTHER NIGHT

Ok just clicked onto the possible confusion...
As this is first ride, when Frosty and I organised this he indicated to me that this wednesday (today) would be tricky for him. So made the first AWNMR next week. the 13th.
The next rides will be first wed of jan, first wed of feb, etc etc

guys n gals--This is one fantastic idea BUT
the only way it will work is being a one on one situation with NO pressure from a group ride.
The dynamics of group riding just doesnt work for this situation
As such I think setting out in pairs--instructor /student at say 2.0 minute intervals going the same route will be fine
one thought would be to swap students at a designated half way point
a different prospective may help

if ther is not enough instructors even setting off in peers student/student could be ok, and then on a break, the peer discusses with an instructor on which skill/technique was being focused on?

Let's start with braking and cornering shall we??
ok - right hand... extand fingers and squezong on that lever thingy... that's your front brake. It helps you slow enough to successfully negotiate a corner.
The back brake will help too, but one thing at a time...
ok... now we've slowed sufficiently... cornering. Right handers seem to be topical...

I'm keen to come along on Wednesday...
May be me riding... may be Sam...
If its me... I'm not really a newbie (can get my full next week) but would still be keen on some mentoring in regards to cornering... and emergency braking (didn't wanna say that lol incase you make me brake hard and drop my bike lol... but oh well... gotta learn or something aye). I don't feel confident enough to be a mentor...
If its Sam riding... she can also get her Full next week... but has less riding experince (in terms of time frame... due to multiple crashes etc) and in regards to riding a 250 (as opposed to the FXR150). So newbie in her case... but dunno how keen she will be to come... will confirm tomorrow

Well, we wouldnt want you to miss out . . . so I'll fill in and be the deck hand if you like! Although, thinking about it, just what "duties" exactly does Qkkid require of his deck hands? If he's expecting to be doing any Jolly Rogering or getting anyone to "walk the plank" then I'll be jumping ship . . . but I think Indy's qualified for that sort of thing being a navy boy and all.

I did my first lane-splitting, my first ride on the motorway, my longest ride ever (by far) and my first lying down on the road with my bike on top of me (just to see what it felt like, you understand). I hope to repeat all but one of those experiences many times in the future.

Thank you to the experienced hands for taking the time to share the knowledge you spent years earning.
Thank you to all the rookies who took the time to swallow their pride and open their minds to what was on offer. We are all rookies to someone and it takes guts to say I don't know I need help.
Also good effort with keeping ego's in check and riding your own ride. It was nice not having a group ride turn into a race.

I guess it depends if we want to make it a structured deal or
just keep it free and easy
I think the carpark as a meetup/departure point is perfect--less traffic pressure
Id also hate for it to turn into a group ride -I think 1 on 1 is the best bet for a newbee

A good effort I thought, few good things learnt by all (including the organisers). Perhaps next time we should do group introductions at the start, as most of us seemed a bit shy on that front, myself included.
DiscoDan - good on you for organising the whole thing.
Klingon - well done for getting back on the bike and right back into it, was good to see you heading down the mway. Good pace, good road position, excellent to see.
Julie - great to see you progress so far in such a short time! You were braking much harder by the end of the session.
The lady on the ZXR - you were braking so hard you had the back wheel waving round in the air!
The lady on the Hyosung - Standout effort of the night I thought, you had that thing stopping on a dime.
The guy on the Hyosung - good progression too, you were looking more comfortable with each pass.
Frosty - Good on you for changing the clutch lever, and for taking charge of the event.
Ixion, Qkchk, MDU, Mack, BigDog, Crashe and co - well done guys . . . it was good to see everyone progressing (and enjoying themselves) under your tuition and encouragement.

Low/Highlights of my night... in this order
Meeting a lot of new faces. Always cool
Going for a blat about the place - again... always cool
... then things kinda turned sour
Kinda stoppie on the RF - (Mission Impossible Music here)... rear wheel up and ... well... I need to go fix that dent in the tarmac. All for a 3 or 4mm stoppie...
Heavy braking on the RF, front wheel hits white paint and the bars do a left and a right and a left and a right... stopped ok though
Afterwards for a beer... Mack grabbed by arse, not a brush, or an accident - we're talking ahandful here! Kinda scary but at least he let go and I was intact (Mack - you should have sen the face of the woman to my left!)
Frosty planted a 30 second kiss on the cheek as he left.

Was tongue in cheek - just saying the Mentors were the ones causing trouble on the day.
Serious note - I was very impressed with the attitude of those coming along for the lesson. I know a couple of you weren't comfortable riding to and from the venue, and some of you pushed things to a point where you were starting to get a bit edgy about it. Tide, Klingon, and Blondini are three that come to mind straight away - that's not to belittle the efforts of others.
A couple of things that have helped me - and still do...
When stopping - practice keeping your feet on the pegs till you've come to a complete stop. It's a simple game, great for balance and you can do it on every ride. Obviously - if you need to put them down sooner... do it. Pride's cheaper than a new mirror...
Practice keeping those lines on the road. RH Wheeltrack, and own your space on the road. It's the vehicular equivalent of "muscling your way down the footpath". Keep your line and stay safe. Be courteous by all means, but don't move left and right to allow others to do what they want. You are a valid road user, just as they are... sometimes they have to wait.
Riding in groups. Stagger and stay in touch. The only time you kinda "lose formation" is around a corner when the best line takes priority. This means you need to be far enough back to swing in behind the rider in front... and you should be far enough back to do that anyway. Stay in the mirror of the person you're following. The person behind you should be in your mirror. The rest of the group will look after itself.
I think that's it, but if there are questions or stuff to practice between now and then... feel free to ask, and feel free to practice.

Scary part is that I didn't notice. I was looking at too much stuff at once - my bad.
It is not something I'd advocate, and even with ??? a lot of years riding/experience it's not something I'm confident of getting away with. White paint's slippery shit and what happens after you start to slip is anyone's guess.

another thing that is simliar to the white lines, possibly only in the wet though
is the smooth black stuff they fill cracks with, its usually just one line about 10 cm wide. and how ever many meters long
but they are terribly slippery in the wet, and often you don't see them at low light. (night time along with rain)
havn't fallen off when riding over them, but have had the back wheel spin, and then re grip once back on the hard road again.
just something to be aware of, as it puts you off balance/catches you out. and the bike could easily slide out from under you.

Just reinforcing that point.
There is a lot of weight in your legs. You move them around i.e. go to put them down, and it unsettles the bike.
Whilst they are on the pegs the weight is both controlled and low.
If you find you get wobbly at low speed, hence tend to put your feet down, look long. Look to the vanishing point or horizon or vehicle in front's roof line etc.

Oooh oooh and bring your broken titanium screw in a jar for us to admire. Do they let you keep them? Or do they re-use them for the next guy?
.
Sadly the screw is not what broke, the whole plate snapped in half and has moved considerably, this means I need a new plate put in and start the rehab all over again.
The plate will be sent off to the lab for testing to ascertain if there was a manufacturing fault or an installation fault. Apparently this has never happened with this surgeon before in 10 years of performing this procedure, so he is a bit bummed, nearly as much as me lol!
So my outlook for christmas is not as rosy as I had hoped and the new year is looking a bit blah too. However, I will be happy to do carpark work with anyone who wants it once the surgery has settled down, I can still yell at people and wave one arm!
Enjoy yourselves and have a good Christmas.

And there I was thinking you only had a screw loose. Instead you must be half Greek or something to be breaking plates like that. Heal up well and I'll be calling you to give my carpark some training. Can you train it not to leap up and bite me please?

Excellent showing from the FEMALES!
Was a real laugh the lady on the forcourt trying to tell them to stop being pillions and start being riders
Pity that less newbies turned out than Mentors.
Problem I saw with that was that the newbies struggled with all of the attention from the Mentors - Information overload.

Kind of... did not seem a problem on first session. Its weird though... we had two 'very new nexbies' (no offence) and that was basically it?? Does that mean EVERYONE else on this site considers themselves 'experts' ? More would benifit, remember folks that these sessions can be tailored to your individual abilities - ie you been riding a year or so and want to improve on a particular aspect of your riding style? You picked up a few bad habits? Had a spill and need a confidence boost?

Navigation classes?
It will never catch on. The best part of biking is knowing where you are going and not caring how you get there!
But if you want a navigation class organise a living room and some maps.
A carpark is not really the environment for teaching navigation.
