I've signed up, I've read the posts, Now all I need is a bike  :soon:
First though, a little introduction.

First a lil bit about myself:
I'm 18, and my father and his father were both bikers, so since I just finished school and ain't going anywhere for a few months I thought i'd try a new obsession :D

Warning to bikers; this paragraph is about cars (cages?):
Until now my sole road experience has been mini's (2 of em) and a twin turbo suby, unlike you lucky NZ'ers ive been stuck in places were having a relative with a trailbike isnt so easy :p Africa/UK and Fiji for about 5 years each. My plan as it stands is to get the mini up to a reasonable state and use the artifices of trademe to get a decent bike.

Now the bit about bikes (finally!)
Given that the next step is getting bike and gear, then practising on some private roads until I can get my learners, I'm looking (read: drooling) at FXR's on trademe, since they seem to tick all the boxes. My dads keen on vtwin hondas for some reason un-beknownst to me, so that should be interesting. The FXR choice is also because its the only 4 stroke I could find of that kind of bike (as opposed to the RG/V)

I've had a chat with the very helpful 'Minnie Mouse' (who is a member on these forums I think) who pointed out that bikes of any sporting pretences are likely to have an "interesting" history. I have no idea what could go wrong, except that if the fairings damaged its worth looking for damage on the chassis, and general checking that the thing runs, I cannot of course check the bike out since I wouldnt know a problem if it bit me in the foot. So any pointers would be very apprectiated.

Lastly, From what i've seen you all seem to be great guys (and girls) so I look forward to seeing you all on the roads and tracks of NZ
At reasonable speeds of course :innocent:

Signing out, Joe

Welcome to KB
I am sure you will find a lot of members up your way who can give good guidance on buying a bike, perhaps even having a look at one for you. You will find KBers a helpful bunch.

Welcome!

FXRs are pretty bulletbroof bikes, you will get bored with one soonish but just watch for those wheelies off the lights...

They hold their value well so as long as when you purchase it, it's been well taken care of you should be fine.

Have fun!

(I wish I was in north Shore... and I will be in April next year too...)

Guddy, on ya for taking up two wheels of freedom! Just remember to dot your i's and cross those t's when it comes to kitting out. Good gear is a must and practicing those skills! Take your time and make haste slowly, plenty of threads here to read and helpful points to take on board.

Now go do that voodoo that we all love so much : riding two wheels of freedom :woohoo:

Welcome to the site. Like gijoe says don't go light on the gear, most important thing to get right when you're sliding down the road!...seriously get a bloody good *new* helmet and good gear. Gloves and boots very important too.

See you out on the road sometime!..

Welcome to KB...

I'm in Birkenhead right next to Highbury... when you get your bike situation sorted let me know and I'll be happy to go on a ride with you! :Punk:

Edit: Why are you looking at a FXR? Personally I'd recommend a 250 as your first bike... you may find you'll get sick of the FXR very quickly once your confidence is building...

As for advice on buying a second hand bike... I'd suggest (seeing as you mentioned your father was/is a biker) that when going to check out any bikes get your dad to test ride them first... if he likes it to that point, then I'd suggest taking it to a bike shop and paying an extra $25-$35 for an appraisal... they will check the history of the bike and let you know if its been in any bad accidents and how reliable the bike is condition/mechanically wise...

good luck!

Yeah i'm a fan of low weight over power, although low weight AND power sounds like fun :D After a mini bulletproof sounds nice, the thing goes wrong every time theres a week in the month!

Sure am, and im trying to unlock that damn sniper so I can give you some of your own medicine :devil2:

I'm a good boy  (do you think I fooled him?)

Welcome to the site. Like gijoe says don't go light on the gear, most important thing to get right when you're sliding down the road!...
I've seen enough vids to convince me of this one! By new do you mean relatively new leather (boots gloves etc) and new helmet? How trustworthy would you say tardme is for helmets?

Your dad's right - get a V-Twin Honda.
You know what they say.. Path of least resistance..

Hi and welcome to KBers :wavey:
Harro!

You know that patience thing has always been a weak point, but i'll try :D

A lady telling me i'm going to get sick of going slowly, I love this place!
Thanks for the offer! I'll take you up on that as soon as I can.
what kind of 250's would you recommend? bear in mind the entirety of my budget will probably be between 3k and 5K max including gear.

Thats more or less what i've done.. Except I haven't repowered it :p At least you can wring the nuts off em and be sure a new 1000cc engine is only $100!

Thanks, i'll remember that!

See you on the road.
More newbies! yay! See you out there.

Yak Shamash!
Is that a Boratism? :D
Just don't touch my horse, last time some gypsies broke in and touch him in private place. He very depressed now.

I'll probably just lurk for the next couple months and post a few questions as I will be out of the country shortly, but i'll post more as soon as I get a bike, and hopefully see some of you guys on a 250 run, till then  :Punk:

Don't buy a helmet off Trademe, ever. Get all your gear from a shop where you can try it on first, never cut corners with this, you will regret it.
5k should get you good gear and a decent bike with no trouble, talk to people and go to bike shops for checking out models that you prefer, then try to find one privately when you know what you want.
