View Full Version : Touring in Aussie - from NZ. How is it done?

I have been exploring this amazing country on the Africa Twin. When I have finished in about 8 weeks time I am thinking of fitting some serious knobblies and taking it across for some outback and desert riding in Aus.

But I need some advice please...

I am from the UK. I have a working holiday visa for NZ. The AT is NZ registered of course.

Some questions:
Anyone done this kind of trip?
Any tips on best way to ship it? (Thanks Jtzzr for help already)
What is the score on NZ rego over there? (Jtzzr tells me NZ plates are no go)
Will I have to import it into Aus? Taxes etc?
Or is there a green card/carnet system?
If so, I would be obliged to remove it from Aus eventually, but what if I did sell it? (Ok, I suspect this would land me a world of trouble...)
Would it be advisable to sell up here and buy again over there?
Does anyone know if visas for NZ automatically work for entry to Aus? (I am waiting for immigration to get back to me...)

Any help appreciated.

Don't think the visa is transferable, need to apply for an Aussie one. I would think it would be less hassle to buy another bike in Aus, for the red tape you need to go thru with re-rego, plates, tax, etc.
If you really want to ship it over then go see a freight forwarder who does split-ship delivery and buy some space in a container.

Hi, my brother just finished a trip similar, I think to what you are planning. You can look at his website here http://www.aussie2006.webset.co.nz/index.htm to see what he did and get in touch with him "hopefully" on this e-mail address mattbishop.nz@gmail.com .I think he should have a fairly good idea of what is necessary.

No major, just a bit of the usual bureaucracy if it's a temporary visit, if it's permanent things might be more difficult.

Cheers
