View Full Version : 31 July Whisky & whatever night

Okay, I've been doing some thinking about 31 July, since Hitcher can't make it and he was the main motivating factor behind the haggis.

Given that only Jim2 and I are into haggis, and Gini is pregnant and the smell of just about anything seems to make her gag at the moment, it's probably best to avoid the haggis this time and leave it for when Hitcher can make it.

I suggest instead that we have a bit of a get-together, at our place, pm me for the address if you don't already know it.

Those who wish to try out decent single malts are invited, and encouraged, to bring theirs for those who wish to be educated in the finer points of life. I will be bringing out Abelour, a Highland malt, and Lagavulin, an Islay malt.

Those who don't enjoy scotch (you all know who you are) are very much still invited. It will be nice to have a good old get-together, talk some shit and have some fun.

We'll have it inside rather than in the gargre which, to be honest, is messy as hell, stinks of petrol, oil, grease, and motorcycle parts, and is not likely to be tidied either. ;)

Be good to see you here..

Simon

31st July, I may just be enjoying a nice wee bottle of Glenlivet on the Lemming Run. Good to see there are others who enjoy a good single malt.

Not sure about the haggis or black pudding tho.

OKay guys.

Gini and I have pretty much settled on the format for the evening.

As you know we are celebrating the end of winter and start of spring (Imbolc), which traditionally is on 31 July.

Therefore its traditional to have a bit of a end of winter feast.

I have previously said bring a plate, lets work out what to bring. A pot luck type arrangement would be cool. We can all mix and match food and come up with something yummy before the evenings festivities take place.

We are lucky enough to have a REAL chef coming on Saturday (Hooks) so if you have any ideas for him, send him a pm.

For those not in to rugby, you're in luck. The All Blacks are NOT playing, so I don't really care if the rugby's on or not. Of course, if you'd like to bring some interesting motorcycle-related dvd's that would be cool.

There are a few partners coming, so obviously there will be those drinking and those not drinking so don't be put off if you think its just a pissup (even though I imagine some will be intending to sample a number of scotches).

I don't have many scotch glasses - does anyone have any they can bring?

I guess a good kick off time if we are eating is any time after 6.00

PM me if you need more info.

One bed is already taken. There are 3, maybe four left.

So far those confirmed:
Celticno6 and his wife Gini
Gini's parents (not kbers but bikers)
White Trash and his wife, Lena
Lynda and Hamish Blair
Hooks & Her_B4
Celtic Sea Lily & TWO unnamed blokes
wkid_one (& partner?)
Puppetmaster & partner
Kickaha

Oh, and we won't be in the gargre. It's too cold, small and smelly, and full of crap to fit more than 3 people in :)

Now - bludging time: I need a ride as try as I might - I don't think the cops will look to favourably I me trying to drive the car with my crutches to operate the pedals.

There will be two of us and we only need a ride one way - any and all others appreciated (of course - we can only accept one, well two if we travel in different cars!)

Sounds good, although does this mean there definitely won't be rugby? This is important b/c my ride will not come if there is no rugby.

Ahem...I'd also like to take the time to clarify that there is only 1 unamed bloke, well if you really wanna know his name is Jimmy (not WT) and the other bloke is Kickaha, so it's not nearly as sordid as it is all sounding!

Just tell me what to bring for 3 peoples worth & I'll make sure we bring it.

So Celticno6 - do you want us to say what we're bringing, or just turn up with something? My specialities usually contain copious amounts of chocolate....

Hooks - good to hear you're coming down from P/Nth.

Wkid_one: where do you live? If it's in L/Hutt or close would be happy to collect you (or is it a ride home you need?)

Mitch: - thanks for the compliment re the IQ (though I think Hamish can take most of the credit!)

Hey guys ... I'll have it ready to go when I get there, I hope, unless the day is a stunner :sunny: and we stay out riding, in which case I'll bring it all and do it up in your kitchen whilst sampling  .... if there are any requests let me know early so as to make sure I have all the gears in my bag of tricks !!! :stoogie:

Lynda - I have the feeling you are about to become my wife's best friend!

Declare what you are bringing if you want. I don't mind ;)

Cathy - we have sky sport - there is another room you can watch the rugby in if you like, but I don't want to put it on in the lounge unless the majority want to watch (damn that's uncharacteristically PC of me). i'm easy any way but do understand others don't like the way rugby tends to take over.

I made the brownies last night.

As I lifted them out of the tin, one of the ends crumbled a bit. So I had to cut a bit off to tidy it up. Of course, I had to eat the bit I'd cut off to make sure it tasted okay. Then one of the other corners was a bit crumbly. No good wasting the bit I cut off is there. then another edge looked a bit ragged.....

What a bloody great night.

Firstly, a BIG thank you to Celticno6 and Mrs C6 for their generous hospitality, and the wonderful fire.

Present were Mr and Mrs Celticno6, Mrs Celticno6's parents, Kickaha, CelticSeaLily, Hooks, HerB4, Mangell6 and Mrs Mangell6 (twice), Jim2 and Mrs Jim2, and Hamish and I. (I don't think I've forgotten anyone, if I have my sincere apologies) Oh, and the only motorcycle present was Celticno6's in his gargre. (we're not wimps, we just like our creature comforts!)

Food was superb, company was great, and it makes me realise (yet again) how motorcycling has such wonderful people.

Topped off a great KB ride during the day (see thread http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=4218 ).

Jim2: you are our official scribe, I look forward to reading your writeup of this great event. Not too much mention of my underwear please, or my painted private parts - you kind of had to be there to understand.

Hitcher: roll on the haggis night.

You're all very welcome. Good to meet a few more of you.

And I don't even have a hangover today!

Went to bed about 0200 this morning, after tidying up. Phew - talk about dishes - even though we used paper plates!

Lovely to see representation by five very nice scotches - Abelour, Tamdhu, Bowmore, Glenfiddich (can't remember which one, but it's brown - Jim2 will know - he brought it), and my personal favourite, my Lagavulin 16 year.

In the end, I think we decided that it was between the Lagavulin and the Glenfiddich, with the Lagavulin winning.

I started with the Abelour, a rather dry, slightly bitter Highland malt, then progressed to the Tamdhu, a nice light tasting Speyside, then I hit the Glenfiddich, and what a taste - a beautiful white chocolatey smooth taste which coated itself to the entire roof of the mouth and slowly sank down filling the mouth with a delicious malty feeling. Superb.

Then on to the Bowmore, an Islay, and I'm coming home. The lush, warm peaty aroma, and that delicious aftertaste - a combination of seaweed and wet dog fur.

Which of course, meant that I had to go for the Lagavulin next. And what can I say about this drop that hasn't been said already? It's the 16 year old variety, its thick, warm, peaty and smoky. It's my favourite!

Food was absolutely yummy. Company was great. Lots of laughs, lots of stories. A great night.

Bikers really are the best people!

Cheers guys

Yeah - if she wants the bill to go from $5000 to $15,000 and need servicing every 6 months to the tune of $500+.

Yeah - if she wants the bill to go from $5000 to $15,000 and need servicing every 6 months to the tune of $500+.

Except after 6 months you'd find the original (soft) Ducati ones were wearing down at an unacceptable rate so the dentist would offer to upgrade them to aftermarket titanium ones for a mere $20,000... Of course you would get a free membership to their owners club...

Anaesthetic is the word you seek. And a mighty fine word it is too, particularly at the dentist... He also wasn't joking about the embossing bit. It won't cost much more to do either, if you're interested...

Why on god's earth would you want to spend more time in a dentists chair to have an advertisement carved in to your teeth that no one can see unless they are prepared to stick their heads in your mouth?

And Hitcher - by not costing more - do you mean rather than being a stupidly expensive trip to the dentist (as usual), it will be stupidly expensive plus say $50?
