View Full Version : Neo gloves- waste of time & $$$

I had a freebie pair of supposedly 100% watereproof Neo gloves to use on my sth island trip last week. The cordura type. What a total waste of time they are. This was the second time I've worn them and both times in rain. Both times they failed miserably. I even sprayed them with silicone this time since they failed on my first use.
First hour into a 5 day trip and light rain- I mean light. Maybe these gloves are meant to be worn inside out? because they got soaked inside as if there was a water pump driving it through. Then the fun bit. Once soaked inside they REFUSE to let the water back out. Impossible to dry them. Now you discover the skin is in deed waterproof. No moisture inside can get bloody out! They started to stink so at Te Anau I found a sports shop and got some ski gloves, as I coundn't bring myself to put my hands back into those stinking damp gloves. At Geraldine I found a m/bike shop and got some real leather gloves (thank you Darbi) - didn't feel too safe in cheap ski gloves although they were damn warm.
Why in today's modern hi-tech times has no one managed to invent a waterproof glove?

Sucks that your gloves didn't work as planned... I have the leather Neo gloves... been over a year now since I brought them... crashed in them... rode in the rain and they are still working hard to keep me safe. Try the leather pair next time!

On advice from a certain multi hair coloured saleswoman at a wgn Honda dealer I purchased a pair of 'cheap' waterproof 'thundergloves' or some such. ($95 from memory)

They are warm and very waterproof and half the price of my Spidi ones. I'm very impressed with them... (but then I'm impressed by steam engines and geese) Only fault is that they are a gauntlet type and thus hard to tuck under my jacket sleeve.

The Quasi waterproof gloves have held up extremely well in the time that I've used them.. they're a bit bulky, but all the extra padding kinda stops your hands getting sore on long trips..

I haven't tried these gloves before, however I my old leather gloves I have had for ummmmm *whispers a number of* years are water proof and have worn them over the years in the rain hail and snow... but this was on a cruiser styled bike and in a sit up right position... now on my VTR in a sit forward position I find the while the gloves are water proof the rain runs down my arms and into the gloves... and I can't tuck them under me jacket... I would probably have this problem no matter what gloves I have... :(

Got a pair of those waterproof 3 finger overgloves. Advertised on BRM a while ago and used them on the Burt Rally they are excellent best thing I've ever used. About 65 bucks. Just got to figure out why the rest of my body gets wet.

I've been looking for something like that. I had winter leather gloves that had a zip pocket up the wrist. This stored a foldout nylon overglove/raincoat for the glove- like a mitten. Worked well but eventually fell apart.

I just bought a pair of those Neo gloves with the Outlast material in them - this stuff is meant to cool your hands when they are hot and release heat back in when its cold. I bought them as a summer glove (yeah and so far thats created a farken lot of demand aye!!) as my other gloves are both waterproof and have that thermal lining that just gets too damn hot on nice days and then your hands stick to the lining........
Anyway I'm really impressed with the Neo's so far as a hot day glove - I'll probably find out this weekend what they're like in the cold but if its cold and wet I'll have the others on anyway. Its actually almost freaky when you stick your hot hands into them and they start to cool down!!!! but it really works and because the lining doesn't stick and bunch up inside the glove (which can effect your ability to quickly grab the clutch or brake) it is also much safer.

AlpineStars DryStar III's are what you want mate.

Warm (Carry summer gloves if you wear them, they are bloody toasty), not sweaty, waterproof and they dry out good and have a really nice feeling.

The only time my hands have got wet in them is when water has run down my arm and into my gloves. That was once.

And even then they were not cold, despite being full of water.

I'll make sure you try mine on sometime. They are either under the seat or on my hands.

I seem to recall the sticker price was about $120..

Both models of Spidi gloves I have are waterproof.
Did you have your jacket cuffs OVER the gloves?

Cheers LBTW. I'll have a look out for those.
I had the gloves tucked into Teknic cordura jacket - that is totally waterproof by the way.

What a pack of flash gits, I use breadbags over my hideously overpriced race gloves.

+1. (Apart from binning in them though!)

$20 bucks! I got them for free. At that price I still consider them a rip-off.
It's not about the price vs quality. I'm happy to pay $100 or so for gloves. But when the packaging go on about being so and so waterproof and I find these the least waterproof gloves I have ever used, that annoys me. False advertising.

You're on the wrong forum. Go back, turn left, take the 14th forum down on the right- wank and wave or something like that.

My opinion for what its worth on these gloves.....bought a pair in Dec last year and have ridden in both fine weather and heavy rain (rain being in early Feb in Auckland at HOG Rally...torrential downpour). Not only did my hands stay nice and warm but they were also dry.

I rate these gloves highly.......

I did my South Island trip beginning of this month and it poured down on the way to Wellington. I was wearing Spidi Step In Road gear, Spidi Waterproof gloves and Oxtar waterproof boots. Dry as a bone

We did our tour down south at the beginning of March and got caught out in ugly weather on the West Coast in summer gloves so nipped in to Greymouth Honda. Got some Oxford waterproof gloves for under $100 and they did the biz even in absolutely torrential rain. I wouldn't mind a set of those NZ made overmitts that were mentioned earlier in the thread. Have read that they are selling very well overseas.

So this ole story still has some life in it.
Blackbird,Hailwood & Finn - good to hear what works for others.
Funny enough I bought some Dirider leather gloves today. What with winter lurking about I thought I better try something else.

I've had a pair of Neo gloves for about 3 months, they were great until they got wet (that really bad weather we had a few weeks or so ago), they trapped the water in the gloves and ever since then they are horrible to wear, let the cold air in and chill the hands, they feel like they are still damp. Before that soaking they handled little showers well.
Mind you it took over two months for the damn dye to stop leeching out of them, purple hands are not a good way to greet people.
They are going in the bin as soon as I can get to a bike shop - $70 bucks down the drain, live and learn I suppose, get what you pay for ...

Oh and these were replacements, the first pair lasted two days, the stitching on a finger broke apart - manufacturing fault

They are called "Rain-Off" - based in Auckland.

We recently toured the Sth Island and hit nasty weather from the Lewis Pass on for 3 days. Everything else aside these are the ducks' nuts! Toasty warm, very dry.

This is their website (http://www.rain-off.com).

I have a pair of these too. Great in heavy rain and also in frosty weather as they stop the air getting through.
