As a new rider, you may tend to ride to left hand side of the road so as to give the cars more room to pass you?

If you do this? Stop it! Stand your groung dead centre in your lane, it is up to them to pass you, not your problem.

Pretend tha are all going to try and kill you

Look at the drive way entrances they are trying to turn into to make sure there way is clear, before they slam on the brakes and you rear end because there path was not clear.

Always make eye contact with the driver of a car that can turn in front of you and take you out, at least that way you know they have seen you.

Have fun and hit the car park, take some thing so you mark the ground there, make a mark that will be guide for when to apply your brakes for braking practise, and come to a complete stop, get off your bike and make another mark, that way you have a reference as to whether you are or are not getting better at it

If noone has already told you, watch the front wheels of cars stopped at intersections and such. You will spot movement in the wheel well before you notice the car itself move (well, a fraction of a second, but that fraction may be life or death)

And DON'T HESITATE TO USE YOUR HORN. If anyone shows the slightest sign of pulling out in front of you, moving sideways on you etc, blast them.

Good words Shaun. Avoid the centre of the lane in the wet though, it's not black in the middle because it's sticky.

Watch out for diesel, nice colourful spots. They will usuall occur in the same spot on the road so be mindful of this on corners.

Keep relaxed, hard as hell to get used to, but good tyres give plenty of grip in the wet. A rigid grip on the bars makes tiring work.

Practicing stopping is best done on an empty part of the road, away from other traffic.

thats so awesome! i remember about 3 years ago when i just got back into biking and i too bought a 150 although a suzuki rg and i was as nervous as hell. i wish i knew about this site then because i was on the side of the road letting cars pass - although i dont think i was doing 50 in a 50k area HAHA

oh those were the days!

And i practised turning and stopping in a carpark after hours and it probably was the best thing i did. i would practise and then go out into the traffic and i actually was better for it.

have FUN  well, it sounds like you are anyhow

Thursday was also my first ever road ride - it was such a GORGEOUS day I couldn't resist it. Before that I had only ever practised in car parks. I really wanted to get my hill starts, emergency stopping etc sorted out before I went out in traffic. Still a long way to go, but there's nothing quite like being out amongst it on the road.

Good gawd....... I go away for the weekend....... and all I am getting are texts from Julie saying "I am doing this and I am doing that"

I say well done......but dont forget to practise.

Now the last thing I said was "you have to practise a lot more in your street.... wait til I get back for the next lesson....."
But no, Miss Impatient one heads off on her own........ into the wild blue yonder......

So I can see I will have my hands full keeping this one in line....
and getting her back to basics..

So Julie, have you taken on board what these guys have said......?
Cos guess what, you and me are gonna be doing...
Practise and more practise.......

You practice your braking in a carpark so if you go past the limits of your brakes or ability all you will hurt is your pride.
The alternative is under the wheels of a truck.
You have a couple of really good carparks close by you

Don't need to pretend

Always make eye contact with the driver of a car that can turn in front of you and take you out, at least that way you know they have seen you.

Don't rely on this.Mindset can ensure that a driver can look you straight in the eye and still not register you are there.
He'll be looking for cars and trucks

Gidday Crashe and Julie,

Crashe good to see you will get Julie under the wing. There have been some tremendously good posts here for you Julie in this thread. You very well may start out riding 'without fear' and then you will start to get that pit feeling in your tummy, take note of it.

Crashe mentioned my BuckBuck Newbie Training Update thread when she was down here in Wellington last week, take some time out together and perhaps read through it together. Remember though it is written by a Newbie and with the influence of a wonderful mentor, it is not the be all and end all - just an insight. Crashe spread those wings my dear.

And Julie, enjoy your new found freedom and pleasure.

Regards

Julie's comment about slowing down...... well about 200 meteres out she slows down to a snail's pace til she eventually stops at the intersection....
So I got quickly onto that...... after that she improved greatly..
So she is taking on all the advise and learning quickly.

But when Im not there Julie is going to practise emergancy braking, weaving etc etc in her street.

Julie - I got a phone call back from the company re incident...
They are not impressed with their driver and he is in deep deep poo...
They actually do random drug tests... guess who is gonna have to pee into a bottle... The company wont stand for reckless or careless drivers...
He was most concerned re your wellbeing.... and hope it hasnt put you off riding.

Mate thats what I was there for, to protect your butt....... from these wankers... I managed to keep him a distance from you... even thou he was right up my arse.

For those wondering: As we were coming down Don Buck Road (very windy road) to head back to Julie's place.. this plonker decided that he wanted to hoon past me and force me into the gutter and be right up Julie's arse...
(she has a yellow L plate on the back)

I was the correct following distance behind Julie..... this dude ended up like a matter of inches from the back of her bike.
I forced my way back in front of the van to protect Julie.. and signaled to the dude to "BACK OFF" he remained on my arse all the way down Don Buck Rd.
Both of us were doing the correct speed limit.... and Julie was following a white car in front of her... in fact there were a number of cars in front. So at no time could we get past as Julie isnt really ready to start overtaking on that section of road. Plus we were doing the speed limit.

I slowed right down to get more space between Julie and I should I come to grieve with this pratt..... If I was to come off I wasnt gonna take Julie down as well. I tried everything to get this dude to back off.... tapping the brakes to slightly shaking the bike... but he stayed right there.

Sure I could have pulled over and let him pass, but I wasnt leaving Julie exposed to that. Plus on top of that he wasnt going to be able to pass all the cars in front.

Back at Julie's I made a quick phone to the company.
This afternoon the manager rung me very concerned.
He is pulling in the dude and about to bollock him out big time...

In this situation I really believe the manager in what he is going to do.

When you get a new tyre on........ you must ride the bike like the ground is wet and slippery....for about 200kms to scrub the tyre in.... ( you have to scrub the shine off the tyre) then you are away laughing so to speak...

dead centre may be right, I would recommend the right hand tyre position rather than "centre", occupy the same space as a car, if you follow the centre of the cars there are 2 things to be aware of, cars leaking oil drop it in the middle between the 2 tyre lines, which if their are showers can become slippery and you also need to be in a position where you can see the cage driver in their rear vision mirror, if you can see their eyes, they can see you (maybe)

My hubby will probably be buying his 5th (or 6th) bike this weekend (first 4 gone when kids born and I have since given him permission to get another) and I also stipulated that he would need to buy me one. I am a bit petrified though, so this thread is really encouraging to read!
I first had a nice wee trail bike then got to ride a friends 150 something, and then hubby's GSXR250(?), but found the gsxr tooo tooo big and heavy. This time I am not sure what he is looking at, but i think it's a GN 250. i am too scared to go try some bikes, can't even remember how to change gears!
So, Thanks for all the understanding encouraging people who are taking time to give advice. Great for the learner like me! (well, will be back on a bike soon enough anyway!)

Hi I was very afraid of the unknowen also....but life is too short to worry about some things.I really love facing my fears and I am sooooo enjoying my new interest.I needed this in my life,I have 4 kids that are my life and I love them dearly I would very much like for them to have me around) and of course I know the dangers I have experienced them first hand,if anyone should be put off bikes that would be me.Just do it and be very aware of the dangers and be careful but do go for it at your own pace.I used to love being pillion and I am sure I still will especially on the big babies but the enjoyment I am getting from riding and meeting like minded people is priceless:yes:

Well only a small ride today to henderson motorcycles and got my new front tyre fitted. Thanks for the friendly service:yes: And had a very careful ride home,I was a little unsure how it would handle imagined i would be slip sliding all the way home but all was good.I went over dodgy railway tracks 4 times and I was dreading this but that was all good too.I did a little stand up over the first time but felt a bit silly when I realised it was not so bad after all:wari:

Great words from Shaun. It all comes down to instinct in the end and we all have that. The more practise we have the more confident we get. I guess the real problem is when we get too confident. Being aware of other vehicles is critical to safety. I spend almost as much time looking in my wing mirrors as I do looking ahead.

Hi all,Just a quick update....Have gad a couple of rough days so have not been out until today .I needed to clear my head so off I went ,a little wary of the new tyre I headed up don buck rd to my mates on red hills but she was not home but I had a little bit of a play in the gravel carefully,Then I headed up state highway 16 to old north road and only rode to the roundabout and went around a couple of times(practising crashe:yes: )Then back the same way.It was what I needed I felt a lot better when I got home.:sunny:

Also it was good to see other bikes out and they all waved out to me and I must say that felt pretty damn good,I mean com on how many times do you drive down the road in your cage and everyone in a cage waves it would be a nightmare in rush hour  And did anyone else see the 6 police bikes all in a group quite a sight to see But I figure they are out patrolling for US.:nya:

What time were you out riding?

I went up that way (Old North/Peak Rd etc) around 1.45pm after refuelling at westgate....

Twas fine all the way til I was almost at Whangarparoa and the heavens opened up big time.. (Pine valley Road) Torrenchal rain....

So I guess you may well have missed that patch of rain. Which is good that you did, as you would not have liked that....

BTW saw no coppers out there at all.

When out on your own if you have trouble with a vehicle driver doing that...
Pull over and let the git pass.... not worth the hassle of them giving you a hard time. Especially as you are still learning.

Looks like the weather is gonna be shite for the next couple of days.... so it would be a good time to give your bike a wash and polish and lube the chain....
(I tend to warm the chain up first when I lube it. Once lubed leave bike to sit overnight)

All part of the maintainence that is required on a bike.

Also have you rung and got the owners manual for it from the previous owner.
And to do the other things on that list !!!!!!!

Yes he is going to find it for me he has only a photcopy version but still works for me and the car was trying to squeeze me off the end of the passlane and he had way run out of room and when i held my ground and throttled a little faster then he stayed right back after that,I knew I was doing the right thing for the moment I promise I did nothing stupid cant think of one good reason why I would   I hear what you are saying and I would have pulled over if I felt the need  :woohoo: :jerry:And I am not SURE how to lube my chain

And I am not SURE how to lube my chain

Have you brought some chain lube.......?

You know where to buy it from.... and you know to ask the previous owner whilst you are there what brand he was using as it dont seem to spray everywhere lol..... so go and get some......
Then I can pop around and show you what to do and then you can do it yourself....... Tis a 5 minute job....
In fact it will be easier when you get the bike stand from Frosty...
But it can be done with out it.

I will show you how and then you can also clean the chain down first before lubing it.

Hi Blondini,
Have enjoyed reading your exploits in learning to ride. Thank you for an interesting read. We were all learners once. Just take your time and learn at your pace. You will grow from your comfort zone naturally. Every time you are out there you will learn more and more. There is plenty of help here as already seen and you have some willing kb people up your way to help with gaining new skills and knowledge. Good luck with your learning and ride safe.

30km or 300, it's all good. It's not a competition. I've got more than 300000 and I'm still a learner.

Ah. You understand. The clarity, the completeness, the freedom, the grace. The Biker Gods have shown you their world. Not everyone who rides a motorcycle is so honoured. Your partner, he saw that world also. I never knew him, but I know that.

30 or 40kms is a nice wee trip......

Soon you will be doing longer trips....... once you feel you can do it....

When the time is right it will happen.

You know the route to Kaukapakapa..... head that way but turn off and go to Dairy Flat Corner...... and then ride home again on the same roads.... that will give you some more kms under your belt....... or turn left at the end of Peak Rd and head to Helensville and then come on back down 16 to home..... you will have to get your speed up just a tad thou and keep it up when travelling back along 16.
Or else keep moving over to left the cars pass you by.

But that is a good route to ride and to help you get your speed up.

Happy to take you out there for a blast if you think you can manage almost 100kms in one go.

Wont comment on what your butt will not be feeling like at the end of it thou....

So here I was going to ring you first thing Saturday morning and say lets go for a ride... not just a short wee ride either.

So question is how long will you be tied up for getting exhaust sorted etc?

The weather is for sunny saturday........
