Hi all, A friend and I are considering a bike trip around India and were wondering if anyone has any info or has been there done that. We would like to hire bikes and be free spirits, not part of a tour group. Would like to go for a couple of months. Questions are: what’s the best time of year (thinking west, south India), is it easy to hire, do we need to take our own lids, what sort of clothing etc.
Would love to hear from anyone who’s done it before
Cheers

HEre's a good site:

It certainly got me all fired up to hop on a singe-banger Enfield and ride off into the ... er, smog.
I intend to do it in two years, once I have paid off my student loan.

My brother was living in india for the last year. He did a few day trips on an enfield and apparently you didnt even have to leave a deposit, contact details or anything - but the guy was really proud of the bike and didnt want any scratches. He also had a machete. :bash:

I'd be really interested to hear what you find out. One of those things I have promised myself to do once I've finished studying and got some dollars together.
I only know of the enfield tours in India organised by a bloke in Auckland, not sure if he is still operating as I can't access his web page. There must a be a number of people that went on these tours though.

We want to be free to do our own thing. Don't really want to do the tour thing. Steam's link looks very interesting and seems to have a load of other links that would be relevant. Thanks Steam

:gob: OMG ... I should never have opened this thread ... dizzam, it has gotten my blood boiling to do stuff like this! I will have to make haste slowly - once you get started I guess you can't stop and end up like those crazy fellas doing a "Last Hurrah!"
On ya, I's so jealous  :woohoo: ..hmm.. you have opened my eyes up some more ... instead of looking at my motorcycling map of NZ, I will pull out others for the rest of the world!

As Warren Miller always says:
"If you don't do it this year, you'll be one year older when you do"
Sounds like a great trip!

You'll have to do it on Enfields. For starters being made in India, there's a shitload of parts for them. There is also a wealth of knowledge and know-how so even if you two are unsure about roadside repairs there'll always be locals able to help out.
I posted a link to a Journo who took one all the way up to the highest road in the world. Sounded like a sweet journey up through Kashmir.
