after the ride to and from welly, i think i've done something to my back, more specifically, the base or my neck/top of my shoulders. A 'sharp' stabbing pain really. Don't think it's meant to be like that.

now being an intrigued kinda person i was thinking of something that might be really effective, and sort this out, so I was thinking about something like acupuncture, since it stabs the spot.. But I don't know who to trust or the best place etc.

or would a good massage place be able to fix it up? And hold off on the 'thai-boy' places, MDU.. But again, no idea where to find a good one.

i think the muscle needs fixing, and the bonesa cracking..
plus, for some reason, i have a guilt about people spending time and effort on me. i know i'd be paying them, but still.. which is kinda why i've never been.

anyway, who's got what experiences and recommendations?
I'm over the north shore, but anywhere round Auckland that's worth the travel i guess

It depends on what works for you really. I personally like accupuncture - it works for me. But then I use different things for different problems.
For muscle spasms I use accupunture.
For joint strains I use Physiotherapy - manipulative mostly.
For alignment problems I use a chiropracter.

It just depends on the issue really - I always start with the R.I.C.E.D. procedure - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, Doctor. If the first four don't work... then Doctor.

Make sure it was an accident so it's on A.C.C.

Try a hot shower targeting the painfull area and Panadol relief. Most likely a Lactic Acid buildup from keeping your neck in the same extended position.
Forget the Chiropractor, try massage next and the Doctor there after.
NO JIGGY.

+1

He uses electro-acupuncture to relax the muscles then chiro techniques to realign. The theory being that with traditional chiros the muscles pull the joints out of alignment again. The practice is that I see him about once every three months when I used to see a chiro or osteo about twice per month.

[Edit:] and he's in taka/milford or whereever it is over there on the shore.

The last person needed to care for a potential spinal injury is a Chiropractor......not saying they don't work, but....their technique can at times be a little brutal and unpredicatable. Had our freindly local Chiro not seen my X-rays BEFORE attempting manipulation, by his own admission I would now be in a wheel chair.

About a fortnight ago I went to osteopath for the first time in my life and was suprised to actually get a lot of relief after only 2 visits. The treatment felt a bit wierd compared to the chiro with a lot less cracking & snapping etc.
I'd probably recommend it as long as thry don't charge like the proverbial.
By the way, I agree with the Xray before any chiro. It's just too physical to muck about with.

Harden up you poof, it's probably a bee sting. Get mummy to rub some Anika on it.

I've got to admit I'm a bit grey on the distinction between chiropractor and osteopath.

About six months after my mangled collarbone finally, set, I threw my neck out -- believe it or not, ducking to avoid a carrier bag that floated up in my face while I was riding -- and it just got worse and worse.

After about three months of paracetamol, ibuprofen, codeine and walking like a thunderbird, I got a personal recommendation for an osteopath. He measured me up, did a whole bunch of popping and cracking, once a week for a month, then once every two weeks for two months, then once a month for three months, then never again.

He identified the slight kink in my spine without an X-ray, later confirmed when I had my medical to come over here.

The relief was instant, from the first time, and the only setback I had was when I gave myself an HT shock trying to sort my dodgy VW camper on the drive back. That fair locked me up again.

I've had a shitty back and hips for years, went to several different chiropractors over the space of about three years then tried an osteopath, and will never go back, my guy is in Lower Hutt unfortunately for you, but he's a god and I love him (not that I tell him that) (or my hubby, lol). Different strokes for different folks and will probably depend on exactly what the problem is. Good luck!

Thanks for all the comments and recommendations. Thinking back on it (ha, my back!), it's not really 'bone' issues, more muscle I think, or nerves.. Macktheknife did an awesome job loosening my neck. The grinding has stopped now (yes, I know..), so that's fixed. He pushed in on the pain (could have hit his goolies for that, but he was helping, so I didn't) which worked for a while, but came back with a vengeance.

I stood in the shower on as hot as I could saturday night when I got back, and sunday morning, which helped relax me, but didn't fix the problem.

I'll probably give that dude a call (Phillip Mettrick) and see what he can do, especially since he's local to me. And, I might take you up on the offer too, BP.

As for that last comment spb, LAMOFRAOTFLMAO.. bwwhaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahha

yeah i have,

had phsyio on it for ages and still didn't come right.
a lot of it was from sleeping on the side of my sore shoulder so i used to tape bottle tops to it so when i'd sleep and roll that side they'd hust and make you move from that side.
you get used to it and dont even wake up after a while.
then had dye injected in there to see where it was leaking and what was needed.
Now they want to operate but cant really afford time off work.
so thats where im at now.
2 of my mates have had the op and it has worked but they dont play there sports anymore.

"Massage therapy"? At least it's probably more effective than physiotherapy -- I cannot believe that it takes five years at university to learn how to use an ultrasound machine and "prescribe" exercise. I blame ACC for foisting this extremely dodgy practice on those with strains and contusions.
