Hi All,
Last month I wrote my '91 GSXR1100 during an arguement with a 4x4's bulbars ...
I came off very lucky (fractured wrist and bruised back),
but the Gixxer didnt ...
Just bought the wreck from the AA for $500 and am planning on rebuilding / re-registering.
Mainly front end damage, forks and upper faring, lower fairing scratched up. Most of the repair cost was new fairing parts and the labour to check / realign the frame.
I plan to strip it down and either rebuild as was, or as a naked street fighter type of thing...
Any tips on re-registering? Is it a pain in the rear ?
Im told that id need an engineering report cos it was written off, and some eveidence that the frame has been
checked.
Im loathed to break it as the engine / trans are fine.
I only had it six weeks before I binned it, and never had real chance to use it properly.
For the record, its been bored out to 1216cc and gas flowed and pulls like a train from 0 to Max.
So you can see why I want it back on the road!
Any help/tips much appreciated.

Welcome, Glenn.
No such thing as too many Gixxer riders. For re-vinning your bike, everything you put on it must be DOT marked and approved. That means no cheesy after market indicators or headlights.
I'm about to start a similar project with an RF900. If you look at Buell pats, you'll see they're the best priced DOT stuff on the market and in a lot of cases, cheaper than after market shit anyway.
PM me and I'd be happy to help out where I can.
Good luck and I look forward to meeting you some day for some street fighting! :ar15:

See if you can check if the reason it was de-registered is noted against the VIN number.
My bike was written off for a supposedly bent frame but that wasn't noted anywhere officially so was very easy to re-reg.
Good luck.

Good luck. So how does it ride? Was it bent? I took a CB750 out a few years ago and it started to do the snake walk at 120.....very scary.

As stated above see what is written about the bike and see why it was put off the road. If you are going to strip it down you should send the frame to SMYTHE & YEATES in Cambridge (07 827 8333/John Yeates) and have it checked. If it is straight or you get it straightened you are well on the road to putting it back on the road. When I rebuilt my 85 Gixxer it was not written off as the owner never claimed insurance on the accident. Turned out the frame was fine but the front rim front shock shafts brake mounts etc including brake callipers all needed a lot of work. I repaired the plastics but it was still ruff and I would advise taking them off. Check the rear shock shaft as the one I got with the bike was leaking. Due to the accident?????I don't think so but the shaft was 2 mm out of line and that was enough to bugger the seal. $800.00 for replacement New. The oil lines in the front of the engine that carried oil to the cooler had taken a hit and one let go on the road. Lucky I was going slow 100kmh and the smoke from the oil on the headers alerted me to the problem. Oil for miles and all over the rear tyre. Had to do some hard drag racing up the shingle drive way to clean it. Check the side walls on the tyres. Had to bin the front off the Gixxer as it was bruised. Check for cracks in the engine covers. Again I had problems with the castings and had to get them welded. Switch blocks needed to be replaced and so it went on.
The bike cost me $1000.00 and I spent $2400.00 on bits including a new rear shock. Did all the work myself so the only out work was with John Yates. I could have purchased one from Trademe for less and in better running order but I learnt a lot. Sold it for $1800.00 in the end. :argh:
It was a very fast and nice bike to ride. Wish I had kept it. Good luck on the rebuild and take your time as it can get a bit frustrating but well worth it in the end. :niceone:

The ZXR400 was written off in a track crash, and all I was asked was "is the frame straight?" Yep. Ok then here's your new rego. It isnt difficult sometimes, but depends on where you go and what time of day etc etc. Just get receipt for frame work from a reputable engineering co and you'll be fine. You will also need a checkover of the brake system from a mechanic (liability issue for the testing station). I have now re-rego'd 2 bikes, one wrecked for parts, the other written off. Its not a major deal, but they always get you to do the brake check.

Hi All,
Thanks for all the feedback, much appreciated.
For the record I actually crashed the bike...
One wet & winday Friday on the North Shore 10 minutes from home. Luckily I was only doing about 40kmh.
Because the bike hit the bull bars on a 4x4 the impact was
just below the headstock. Forks are therefore bent.
It was at zero speed when it fell on its side, so most of the
damage is cosmetic.
Theres no damage to the engine covers, no oil leeks, oil rad seems ok too.
I got a copy of the assessor's report and the main structural bits were the forks. He also put down 10 hours of labour to have the frame checked/realigned.
I think thats the only part I will get done proffesionally.
Wont know if its FOBAR until its stripped down, but cant see any cracks around the headstock area, so may be ok fingers crossed.
Im going to charge the battery and makes sure she turns over and fires up ok before i drain the tank, carbs etc.
Manu hours ahead in the garage with cups of coffee beckons ...
Had a 1999 GSXR 750 in the UK which was quicker in the bends but no power until 7k. The 1100 (1216...) is much more fun twisting the right hand!
Thanks again Guys.

Yep you are so right about the 750. I have a mate here that has the big bore 1100 cc. He was a bit put out when we went on the first ride together. He was going to kick my ass. Now I am no race track king but he chose the wrong road. All corners and few straight bits. When I passed him under braking and then disappeared in to the distance he was not amused. The 750 is so good under brakes and hard cornering. As long as you keep the power band in play. 7k and up. But in a straight out drag on the flat stuff I do struggle and have to work on the red line. Mind you it is a Gixxer and that's what it does well.
If it is only the front end you will be back on the road with no plastics in a few weeks. There was a discussion here on fork shafts and straitening them a few weeks ago. It was the general consensus that it is better to replace than try and straighten. I would agree. If you get second hand look for stone chips in the chrome. They are only small but the oil seals will let go ever time the base steel rusts even a little. The cost of re chroming was around $200 a shaft. So if the second hand ones you get have chips look at new or some that do not have chips Good luck and I am pleased to hear it was only a slow speed off. The one that stuffed the Gixxer I rebuilt broke the frame behind the seat as it cart wheeled down the road. No I was not on it :sweatdrop

I agree with most of the above posts.
Ive rebuilt a heap of bikes and what is soposed to happen nowadays is
That the frame gets checked for straight and damage when being recomplied.
I would check with LTSA as to exactly what the Insurance company put in the computer when they wrote it off.
Djebbie Bruin is on the shore and hes a pretty good frame straightener if your frame is bent.
Ohh for the record all you guys . -Forbes and davies are right now importing accessory indicators that ARE compliant -They were intransit a few weeks ago.
