I'm slowly working out there are quite a few of you out there, and I had a thought.

... why not start off getting yourself some safety gear and join in some of the group rides etc as a pillion.

You get to join in, meet the people and get some experience under your belt before you have to shell out the big dollars on the machine/get your licence/whatever. I'm happy for someone to sit on the back of my bike anytime - and I expect there are a few others in a similar position.

... just a thought...

Me too! I started out as a pillion on MStrs's bike , I now ride my own wee beastie and go for my restricted on Thursday!
If I can do it, anyone can!

Who says they're pillions? I know I tend to lurk around other forums quite a bit, through Google searches for stuff about my bike. You don't really feel much need to join, unless you have a particular question to ask.

At any rate, they bloody well should join up! Go on a ride!

Fair call... the thought I had relates to those waiting to get into motorcycling... just at that point where they can watch but not join in... yet.

No argument from me

Guilty as charged....
Although a long time rider, mainly a loner, I'm hesitant to go on Kber rides because of the sort of comments that tend to come on here about them, but that could say more about the commenter than the rides? Also I think I'd raise the average age of the ride by about 5 years :shifty:

I'd seriously suggest you come and judge them for yourself if you're interested. I'm not saing there are no problems - they just tend to get more focus than they deserve.

Try one ride... and it's your call from there.

thats a great idea! i was pillion for..................10 years. (starting out on my street every evening when dad would get home from work)

and then you would meet people face to face, and when it comes to buying your bike, you will have plenty of help from people you ahve met face to face.
n you'd rack up all sorts of knowledge before it comes to the time where you are gripping the accelerator.

The thing is by lurking you're not getting involved. You've got an interest in biking or bikers otherwise you wouldn't be lurking here. I say, if you like it get involved - whether it is by being a pillion, getting a bike or becoming a member here. Some do bite but for the most part we're a good bunch of people.

Hmmm... this is interesting and I'm wondering if I should even post or if I'm just asking for a flaming.... :dodge:

I started out as a pillion, then I carelessly misplaced my chauffeur. So I came in here and asked airound to see if anyone would be willing to take me as a pillion (no strings attached, so to speak). I discovered that it's quite a risky thing for a single female to do. Most people were kind and helpful, but I found I had to be very alert against the freaks, weirdos and hormone-overdosed little boys.

So yeah, sounds like a simple thing - just log in and head out for a ride. Actually it requires a lot of thought, a lot of caution, and a large dose of trust.

By the way, I found my chauffeur again.

A very good point and one to be aware of (for us non lurkers and volunteers of pillion services). It has to be - and stay - above board. This is a pure and simple offer of a ride on the bike.

Hey I'm happy to help... my suggestion is to simply get along to the Thursday night rides and find a seat. Anyoine wearing a ring is off limits (even if they insist they're not) and anyone with a tan line where their ring should be is also off limits??

Well, down here in Welly there are the Cruisy Wednesday Night Rides which cater for newbies, pillions and those wishing to take it a bit easier. It is a good environment coz there are a few other people around and the location is pretty nuetral. The other good thing is that if you turn up in your car you can always decide you don't like it and leave without ever being exposed to anyone.

Another point is that this aint a dating site. The main reason people around here hook up (young 'uns term), I think there's only been a couple, I think is because of a common interest (in bikes).

You will see me in the new year at a few of these rides if you come along. I'm married and happy so no fear of any 'motives'.

Well... you still have to know whose bike to get on the back of for a safe and comfortable ride. I hope any other KBers present would be smart enough to stop any newbie getting on the back with some of the crazies I've seen around. (I'm not mentioning any names so if you recognise yourself in this description it's your own problem!)

Yeah - that's what I would recommend to anyone joining a ride for the first time - and that's what I did. I showed up in my car at the pub at the end of the ATNR and got to meet a few people and listened to their stories about how fast they could go on one wheel while seated backwards with a beer balanced on each shoulder. My short list of potential riders became shorter by the moment.

...without ever being exposed to anyone.

TCWNR was my first ride on here and that was pretty good, not intimidating at all. After a while you hear all the go fast, cop runner and ride like an idiot stories going over a beer and chips. Its up to you whether you ride like that but I'd sooner end up arriving home, tucking myself and my bike into bed in one piece.

I'd challenge the truth in about 75% of those brags anyway.

Its good to be surrounded by like minded people who enjoy a good ride and can provide real world advice if you need it while I tell them about my latest runner from the cops where I rode through farmers, all the time on my back wheel, balancing an emu on my right shoulder and reached 320 Km/h on my 250 up an escalator :killingme .

Well not a lurker anymore - I have started to post.... when I've felt it wasn't too out of line to.
Originally I found this site because I was always looking for good jokes - you'd be surprised how far up google you guys come. Was a lurker for ages until to view the good jokes I had to join... wondered if I'd slip in under the radar even if I was a 'cager' :shit:
But now I even creep into other areas of KB (as you can see) and feel like I'm getting to know some of the more prolific posters anyway.
And I feel that I can't rightfully be kicked out... I hired a motorbike for over 2 years when we lived in Thailand. But now we have a child and well, the booster seat wouldn't really work and well, to be honest, much as you all deride the cage, at least it gives you some measure of protection when you meet some meatheads out there on the roads   :( :2guns: :bash:

Ah a Kevin Bloody Wilson fan.
Meat heads are not exclusive to cars an another car does provide a bigger target (sorry meant wall of force field like protection).

But seriously the only reason I have been without a bike in 14 years was when I had the cage to cart 3 kiddie seats.

Just one would have yielded a sidecar (with trainee swinger) or a trike not a cage.

Well I guess I count as a lurker. Haven't been on KB site in many months but am now popping around again.

Had bought a cage :dodge:, but never drove it  (No license, the car was supposed to motivate me towards the license but somehow that died pretty fast. That and running a 2.8l classic car costs too much.) Now am selling it and seriously considering buying a GN when the money eventually comes through. (Damn lazy people who take forever to sell their cars!).

Haven't got my bike license either, can't find where i put the damn practical skills test certificate thing since it was filed when we moved house. But am going to start the giant search for it when I have time. (Else I’ll just have to go sit it again.)

Oh well, I don't post too often as I don't usually have anything constructive to add to the conversation. But will probably attempt to involve myself...

As soon as I get the bike or gear (or both)ill definitely join in on all the fun.

I'm too lazy to get my butt out of bed most of the time for the organised weekend rides.
My bike is my primary mode of transport, esp since the damn car requires a jump start to get it going.

Frigging heck - and I have trustingly hopped onto pillion seats for decades. Thankfully I'm too old, ugly, and hopefully wise, to be duped or phucked around with. I thought bikers were all nice people!!

Most posts on here are from Auck or Welly ( or London). No-one on here from the Manawatu seems to go biking with fellow KB'rs.

This lurker is currently bereft of a rider, so if you're safe, experienced, and have a decent pillion seat, I'm open to offers. I'm a lightweight passenger ( 35kg) so I shouldn't mess up your handling skills much.

And great posts klingon

Yeah, I heard that the summer in NZ is yet to kick in properly…. terrible what's happening with the world coz winter has usually kicked in with a vengeance over here by now too…. We've only just dropped to single figures temperature wise! Most pleasant.

Enjoy the summer guys (when it finally arrives) and I will keep on lurking - reading about your fab rides!!!

For future reference, I think you'll find it's easier to ride up those travellator things than escalators. On the other hand, escalators are more fun to ride down.
