Prime Minister Helen Clark has left the door open for a ban on drivers' use of hand-held cellphones in future.

Miss Clark said Cabinet last week had decided against the ban on using cellphones while driving because research showed it would make little or no difference to the road toll.

"The reason a ban wasn't agreed to at that time was that information we had was it might - underlining might - save one life a year." she said on TV's Breakfast programme.

"Now that has to be put against the inconvenience of the travelling public."

She said the matter could be revisited if evidence showed a ban would make a significant difference.

"I'm happy to have the matter looked at again...but there's got to be good evidence."

Transport Safety Minister Harry Duynhoven is in favour of a ban.

He raised the issue with Cabinet again after the death of 16-year-old Sharleen Lloyd, who police suspected was texting when the car she was driving crashed killing her near Whakatane this month.

United Future, also supports a ban, and MP Gordon Copeland said that last year 79 crashes - seven of them fatal - were caused by cellphone distractions.

Miss Clark said the advent of texting and its increased popularity had added a twist to the issue.

She said it was "absolutely ridiculous" for people to try texting while driving.

Vodafone and Telecom have said they would not oppose a ban on the use of hand-held phones while driving but have not established a position on the use of hands-free devices. ENDS

Today I saw this fkwit reading (the paper was on the steering wheel), talking on a cellphone and trying to drive!! He wasn't reading a map either!! Had basically stopped in the middle of an intersection - finally he looked up and zoomed up to the other cars!! Hello Planet Earth!!! Clarke passing the buck again.

clear pocket in the top of your tank bag and some nice thin racing gloves........

What the fuck does she mean she needs evidence?? Surely there is all the reports from other nations that have already banned there use, or has Victoria not done it yet so she doesn't know who to copy this time?

Saw a guy yesterday on a Bandit txting.

How about the clown in the AA rescue ute the other day who was so busy looking at his computer screen he had to brake a bit quicker than normal. Wasn't an OMG moment, but surely you'd think these screens can't be used while the vehicle is being driven.

I saw of Myth Busters (on prime tV) a while back they did a small study and prooved you do have full control over the vechicle when you have your cell phone to your ear and having a conversation and trying to drive...

Like hello its fu*cken common sense is it not????

That stupid trolip can't work out that when people crash they don't say to the cop "I was texting my mate" they make up bullshit like "sorry officer a bottle rolled onto the floor and I got distracted". Of course the bloody stats don't show many cellphone related accidents. Yet again, if she lived in the real world for at least 5 minutes of her life she would observe first hand how crap these people are driving when dialling or texting.

Of course Labour won't ban it. It would adversly affect their natural constituency. They wouldn't be able to phone their favourite gay 0800 shagmelikeabigblackdog sexline on their way home from their cushy Govt jobs.

I thing you mean don't. Their little study showed that the cell phone users had less control the someone over 1.0 on the breathalyzer, 60% less competent at doing a circuit they had by that time done 4 times.

Well they banned HHP's (hand held phones) in the UK and bloody good job too. Plod had an immediate crackdown of course. But you still got people using them and dropping them like hot bricks if a copper came into view!
I dont understand why its such a decision to insist on hands free kits in cars. There is no decision really, just do it!

Dunno if it was news over here but before I fled the UK people were being busted for eating while driving too...sarny or Mars Bar in one hand meant not being in total control of the vehicle. Now that is a bit hard to swallow, especially for those Yorkie Bar munching truckers. So where does it all end? Theoretically adjusting your CD/radio is just as distracting. Although having said that, the Peugeot I had at the time had these controls on a steering column stalk.

Yes, but it's the exciting anticipation that distracts them. That, and driving no hands.

thats because mother clarke drives with a cell phone... she has mistaken it for a brain cell and if she got rid of it in cars then she would be brain cell-less...

just a thought?
