Is it all good to make up your own number plate?

The one on my GSXR is slightly broken/bent so I thought I should get it sorted. Got a vinyl sticker of my plate from a signwriters, can I just make up my own plate out of something and slap on the vinyl sticker? Are there any restrictions on sizing/font or whatever?

Cheers
Stefan

I did this on one of my cars years ago, and got a $150 fine for my troubles.

I think you need to get your plate remade or replaced through VTNZ or AA

I have heard it is illegal, too easy to forge plate numbers

Sorry. Illegal. Even if you made up one identical to the kosher ones. Must be gubbermint supplied.Stupid rule.

You have to have a real plate made by the official real plate makers.

...which is why I want to know how those sports cars with painted-on front plates seem to get away with it.

Yup illegal

The crux of it is under Transport (Vehicle and Driver Registration and Licensing) Act 1986 - Part 1 Registration and licensing of motor vehicles (s 4 to s [36A) Licences for motor vehicles
15 Replacement certificates of registration, [licences, and registration plates]

Where it kinda states that;
[(3) The Registrar[[, or any person appropriately authorised in that behalf under section 8(6)(c) or section 13(6)(c) or section 34(2)(c),]] shall, if satisfied that the relevant certificate, licence, or registration plate has been lost, stolen, damaged, or destroyed, or that subsection (2)(b) of this section applies, issue to the owner of the vehicle—
(a)A duplicate certificate of registration; or
(b)A substitute licence; or
(c)A substitute registration plate; or
(d)A duplicate personalised registration plate, where appropriate,—
as the case may require.]

Subject to having a law degree (which I dont) - then the replacement needs to come from an authorised source :whocares:

The problem for the E type Jag owners is not the cost but the fact that there is nowhere to mount it (really isn't)

Plenty of room on the front lip of an E types radiator inlet to drill two holes for a plate  Either at the bottom lip, or the top.

Eight dollars in fact. Take old one into Vehicle licensing agency, fill out a form, pay $8. You will get a new (with a different number) plate, and new rego papers will arrive in a week or so. Don't forget to tell Insurance company about new number.

'Bullshit' plates are not legal. In some circumstances the cops turn a blind eye, but I wouldn't rely on their goodwill....
These vinyl plates are often to be found on the front of MX5's, Cobra's and the like. I have made them for such cars before, using reflective white background and black nos/outline so that they closely resemble the real thing. The owners know that they risk a fine, but prefer that to a real plate buggering up the lines of the front or blocking the radiator air intake.

i think also that the plod don't mind as much if you have a real plate attached at the rear that matches the front. Less dodgy.

Its not a WOF issue.

The cops that have pulled you over either haven't noticed the plate or simply don't know that they are illegal.

Its a $200 fine.

Not really, what about the other plate that belongs on the front of the car? Where is it if it isn't on the front of the car it belongs to?

Why not have two identical cars, (his & hers), put the original plates from one on the back of each car and a fake on the fronts, then only register one and use both for the price of one?

i'm pretty sure you can get the same number, but it costs more!

so you pull Winja in his MX5 with a vinyl front plate that is clearly visible reflective can be seen by a speed camera, has a proper one on the rear and its pair inside the vehicle would you fine him the $200 tax?

:Offtopic: I know this is a bit off the subjuect but when did that ever stop anyone posting

I see in one of the latest AMCN's that the Aussie governtaxgatheringmint has finally given up on the idea of front number plates on bikes over there so they can catch the small minority of bikers that speed past speed camersa (naughty boys and girls). It was an issue worrying the hell out of bikers over there for ages but looks like its been resolved at last. Imagine trying to put a plate on most modern bikes:gob: ????
I imagine they will move to transponders instead then there will be little room to escape:shit:
And some wanker here will surely follow if given the chance.

My mum recieved this fine on her MX5 the other day $200.00, she drives a MX5 and had made an identical looking number plate from Vinyl and reflective material etc.... as well as displaying the original in the front window, the main reason was because of overheating problems as the factory location is right infront of the inlet manifold. Luckily they offered her 14 days compliance but unfortunately there is not much way around it as it needs to be a number plate as produced by LTNZ or a recognised maufacturer (personalised plates etc...) however i talked to the local police prosecutor and he said in special circumstances vinyl ones may be allowable, he just lost a case where some one had a masarati (sp?) got away with it because there was nowhere to put it. however on a bike.........i dont think there would be anyway round it.

I recall in my doughtnut eating days of pulling over a chap on Orewa's sunny beachfront using brown cardboard plates marked in brown marker pen.... classic.... said he just couldn't afford the replacement plates. Lucky for him he had no record and hadn't been involved in petrol drive-offs.

I got pulled over within an hour of owning my new car with a sticker plate. I only got out of the ticket because I had a signed bit of paper showing I had just bought the car AND my old car was being driven by a friend with my p plate on it which I told the cop was going on my car the next day. He accepted that and let me off.

Just do like the boi ricers' do, and bolt the plate to the front bumper... off to the side (some are right under the headlights).
This seems to be the trend, and I bet it makes camera detection difficult!

Because it is a padantic law & the law is enforced at the discretion of the police. I have seen many a car with stickers on the front, the ones I have seen are around the same sized font as a standard plate, clearly visable & readible, so what is the problem? A cop would HAVE to be a complete fucking asshat to give you any grief over that...............OR you were doing something stupid, he pulled you over & slammed you for that also.

The factory location is offset on the left side, under the headlight (since the MX5 will overheat if you block the 'mouth'). But the NZ plate won't fit in the original plate holder/mount. I've got the NZ version plate holder, which mounts to the same place, but it's still a pain, it's a stone magnet (I've got almost no paint left on the bumper above it), and apparently heaps of people manage to run it into things and crack the bumper right open due to the weakness from the mounting holes.

Yes you will get tickets with a stick on, that's the risk you take. Best solution I've ever seen for it was a hinged plate in the 'mouth' that was sprung so that once the car went over around 15kmh it flipped right back, and closed again once under that speed. Bet Mr Plod wouldn't like that one much either though if they knew :)

I got a ticket for $200 re illegal plate

Easy defence in that my argument was the plates are illegal in that they contravene wof regulations, in that they are a dangerous fixture or fitting

Plods promptly dropped their case as they knew that they would lose
