View Full Version : A gift - from the law

a week ago i had a run in with the law.
doing 120+ in a 50k zone, failing to stop (didnt know i was being chased), excessive acceleration, dangerous driving.
i could have been arrested on the spot!
anyhow, the guy was a proper policeman, not a traffic snake, so he just did me for 80 in a 50k zone..which both of us agreed is leniant (it was late, like small hours..)
he was a good guy, who used to ride bikes.
I got a letter yesterday saying i should have gone to court for a charge of excessive speed, and because he didnt, and the fact that he gave me a roadside warning, i will be let off a $230 fine and 40 demerit points!
i posted him a case of beer to the station!
is that a good xmas gift or what?

Good work that officer.
That's one reason i cringe when i hear people saying they'll fight a ticket in court after a cop has given them a fine for a lesser speed than what they weere doing - that sort of behaviour probably invokes a reaction from the cop along the lines of "ungrateful bastard, i wont do that again".
I hope the hierachy of coppas dont find out about the beer, no doubt they'd see that as corruption or something. But good on ya for taking it the right way and not bitchin' it up! :)
Merry xmas, now watch those remaining demerits

120 in a 50 zone?
Though I do disagree with 120 in a built up urban area there is a lot of places where 50k is a dumb speed limit.
One has to have an idea of the location and circumstances, as if the cop let him off 120 through the middle of a school zone then he needs his bollocks removed with a pair of rusty chainsaws, but if it was opening the taps at the edge of town going in to the country? the middle of a deserted industrial area at night?

I see both sides to it...agreed with your reasoning as I've seen many places like what you've described above, especially up here.
Suppose it just comes from a parents point of view that when you read "120+ in a 50" that I cringe.
Onya anyway Carver for your reduced sentence mate...dunno if you believe in karma dude but I'd say you've used yours up for quite a while!

i would say though, not meaning to brag, but i got skills on a bike, i have put 3000+ k's on the GS in 3 weeks, got no chicken stips, and i practice my balance on my trail bike by doing dirt riding, wheelies, stoppies, jumps, slow-trials-ish stuff and powerslides...but i hear your concern.

What the fuck is the point in this thread? It sounds to me like you are having one big wank and shooting your load all over yourself. We all do stupid things, some even as stupid as 120 kmp/h in a 50 zone, or worse, however there are always consequences at some point and to varying degrees.
The smart ones shutup and learn from it, the doomed end up in the same situations again and again until they finally meet the ultimate consequence of them all.
Stuck months on end, paralysed in a Hospital bed next to markauckland.

yep....im with you AH.....what a lesson to teach eh? its ok for you to go 70k over the posted speed limit, cos i got let off, and reacted by giving a cop booze. nice.
sure...sometimes 50k is a stupid limit, but its there for a reason. sometimes 100k is a stupid limit too. and sometimes, bike licenses are dug out of weetbix boxes.
quit giving us all a bad name eh? i for one dont want to be pulled up every 5 mins just cos i ride a bike. btw...i do occasionally go over the limit, but never ever by that much...cos thats just being a huge tosser. you should have had the book thrown at you, and ive lost more faith in the cops for letting you off easy. that cop is not fit to be a cop if hes too gutless to ticket someone for what they deserve.

Oh how I love it when we all bring the knives out for someone. He knows he was in the wrong, we don't know the exact circumstances of the event, all he was admitting was despite doing something that could've had him arrested the cop (who did know the circumstances) decided that arresting him was not worth it, rather a lesson learnt and a ticket given. And in regards to recent events, there are still plenty here talking about 'giving the learn' to someone on public roads etc, shit even a vid of someone doing far worse on a public road.
Merry Xmas Carver.

It's where you come from. In Dunners, 50kph areas are prolly residential. 100kph+ would be unwise at least. But in Dorkland, at the weekend there are vast (and I mean VAST ) areas of industrial an commercial zoned streets where at the weekend there is NOTHING going on. Long roads, good roads (cos during the week they have to accomodate all those B trains) , all side entrance closed off with locked gates. Not a human soul for miles around. NO, zero, zilch, risk of children, kittens, old ladies etc wandering out in front. 120kph ? illegal, sure. Unsafe? not really. No more than Paeroa during the Battle of the Streets. Only real risk is encountering the occasional cop cruising through looking for opportunistic break in type people. As the OP found.

Fark some of you guys are just going psycho over what Carver posted.
And when it comes from people on 1000's it's just fucken hilarious, like you guys have never exceeded the speed limit by 70kms? Smells like high horse bullshit to me.
You guys don't know the exact circumstances - you just assume the worst and that the stretch of road in particular was not safe enough to ride at that speed and thus bag Carver like there's no tomorrow.
And the gesture of a case of beer to the very lenient officer is really quite a standard Kiwi way of saying thanks between blokes. A case of beer a bribe? - Yeah right! Though it has been mentioned it can be against police policy so hopefully you sent it to him through the correct channels.
