Whats the entry numbers like Deano?

I would not want to take up valuable time from 'serious' competitors but running the mighty Tritanic down there could be a laugh..... And thus far - the disasters that have kept me from everyone of these events are missing from my calendar..

Paul N

There were 43 in Sept and 27 in November (the weather probably put a few off in Nov).

There is no limit to the number of entries - with the whole day at our disposal I think everyone gets more than their share of attempts, providing the weather is ok.

You're more than welcome, you might even win something.

Good. I didn't bother getting out of bed in Nov. because of the inclement weather. We don't do inclement weather do my bike and I. No in deed we do not. But we do like... to thrash the shitters out of the motor on a #@%* bril day.

Hehe , Pauls Guzzi would be the first "mouse firing etal" in the sprints , surley he'd win something for that !.
Paul , you'd be welcome to take a "more modern" twin for a run :msn-wink: , I'll be going.

The over/under 600 is a way of penailising those cheating kwakas and trumpies who can't do a half decent 598cc engine (well kwaka used not to.)

But then I may be wrong.

Call for Marshalls/Assistance.

Ok, can we please have some volunteers to marshall, record times, sizzle sausages etc at the sprints on February 11 ?

We also need an MC to announce the riders as they commence their run. A knowledge of bikes is prefered but not crucial. A sense of humour will help too.

If you are planning on competing, could you maybe bring a partner or friend that may be able to assist us, even if only for half the day ? The roles can also be rotated to give some variety.

Marshalls would need to be on site between 8.30am and 9.30am to help set up and attend the briefing.

Please reply or PM me if you can help.

Hey Deano you seem to be in bed with the organisers. How about a 800cc class- no jinx'd seven fiddies allowed.
Better still a 800cc parallel twin class so I can clean up.
I might enter the new bike but it's not worth the effort doing the flying- no chance of setting the world on fire there. But I'm interested to get the beemer timed over the standing 1/4 starts. It seems quite quick off the mark in the lower gears.
Will there be a wheelie session? Always a crowd pleaser. That way I'll get more for my entry fee.

Hmmm.... Well... I reckon, based on private testing carried out under strict laboratory conditions that the mighty Tritanic can wheeze up to an utterly phenominal 85 to 95 mph velocity (135 to 150 kph) with a true potential of 160kph on the cards (gasp) but the clutch is a bit slippy at the moment so hard to be sure... Even if it's a lower figure its nice to have something to do better than...

So - provided she passes the home mech check tonight (ie not eating it's lash caps) AND I can squeeze into me leathers (burp) I reckon I might rock on up for the laugh of it. Geeze, I'll even fit the patented oil breather catch tank for the real road racer look but the wide cowboy bars are staying!

Bit rough paying the 'over 600cc' entry for an under 250cc performance but I'm up for it I reckons.... Probably have to be headed away around 2pm though....

Cheers

Double checking the safety gear at the mo, but nylon motocross trou are ok as are kevlar trou and heavy worsted (woolen) trousers, so I can't see cordura being a problem.

Whatever time you can get there is ok, but closer to 8.30am the better.

I have not heard back from Mooch yet - so unless I hear otherwise will stick with Plan A and meet you at 0700hrs. I assume you might travel via Greys Rd/Paekakariki Hill Road so I will wait on that side of Pauatahanui roundabout for you (and thus will also remain visible to any low flying 748's coming from Whitby). If we miss each other then I will be stopping at Caltex Rimutuka for a top up so if all else fails no doubt our paths will cross somewhere along the way.

Well I'm first back because I'm old and my bikes even older and neither of us can afford the kind of abuse I was dishing out.... Yes - on my first standing start it jumped out of second and I panic shifted straight through 3rd into one of the many false neutrals that lurk between the gears and the tach saw some numbers that it will hopefully never see again - all for a 16 second standing 1/4.... (sigh) 2nd run was a bit better but short shifting did little for the time.

However - thats the only bad thing. It was a bloody brilliant day - wonderfully well organised and more fun than custard filled rubber undies.

The mighty Tritanic flew through the traps on the flying 1/4 at an astonishing 159.83 kph (99.32mph in the old money) which put a swell in me trousers and a smile on me dial - feckin brilliant for a damn near 40 year old 650cc bike I reckon. The last few rpms needed to be squeezed from the old tart and since the day was heating up, I saw little point in going for the magic ton! (160.93 kph).... Next time I will be using a few tuning tweaks learned in the pits (like removing the mirror)

All in all - It was the best $50 sods I've spend this year. Thanks to all the organisers and helpers - you people are doing a good job and turning on a decent event. We just need to get out there and support them. This is grass roots stuff guys - After my performance on the tritanic today you cannot make a bigger arse of yourself so now that I've happily lowered the bar - go for it....

Paul N

ps - Lots of bikes going flat out up the hill on the way back. Funny how people will spend a shit load on tinted sceens and risk a fortune in tickets breaking the law but won't stump up $50 to go as fast as you possibly can safely and legally.... I did 4 runs - cheap at twice the price.

I just got back too, it was AMAZING!
300kph, that's pretty fast. One day I will go that fast. In an aircraft.
I tried to take photos but I kept shooting empty road, I couldn't time it right!
The Hayabusa with the turbo sounded amazing, like a jetplane more than a bike.
I ate two sausages and met more Kiwibikers, I met MD, Deano, Lissa, Et Al, Paul, and I saw Limbimtimwim and Darkman too from a distance.
Next time I will go early and volunteer for marshalling or whatever.
Wicked stuff!
And I am proud to say my mighty combat GN250 had six people gawking at it at one stage. All of whom were on bikes of one litre capacity or greater!
I kept quiet that it was mine and said "yeah, it's cool eh".

Couldn't ask for better days riding. Even scraped the CXs foot pegs a couple of times. At well below the speed limit I might add.

Took Gary on a bit of tarmac he hadn't covered before and discussed some routes the Aushurst lot could do in future.

I feel a bit guilty just turning up for the lunch time shananagans. Thanks Deano for letting me participate. As soon as I arrived Tony was screaming, "Quick come and join me. I'm not doing wheelies on my own"

I intended to get there early but slept in. Two stubbies at night does that too me nowadays.

I look forward to seeing how that crazy black BMW K1200R (without a muffler) did in the results. He looked damn quick in the standings that I watched.

Hey Paul- you were the star! Listening to people "oooh, arghhh, that's beautiful" as you lined up. Of course they were describing you in tight leathers, the bike wasn't too shabby either. No, I have to say, it takes my breath away.

I asked around and no one with a camera seemed to have caught my new beast in action? If anyone captured a suitable 'moment' let me know please.

Try about 50psi in the tyres too Paul....always good for a couple of k's extra!

Good ride both ways. Bit annoyed now I didn't enter as it would have been good to compare my bikes times with Vasaline Warriors Hyosung. Road seemed pretty flat with even the fastest bikes looking rock solid.

Some people were very good at launching in the standing 1/4 others didn't get away that well. Great wheelies in the lunch break. Shame the Turbo Busa wasn't running perfect with a bit of a miss up top but 294kph wasn't to bad.

Cheers to Deano for the commentary it made the event heaps better.

Your bike is Cool, Steam.... nice to see two other GN's there! At least my was the shinest!!! :D

Thanks Cliff Hanger Promotions for putting on another great event. My day started early when I met up with Paul in NZ and Mooch at the pre-arranged time of 0700hrs but the early start was worth it because the ride up Rimutaka Hill was clear of other traffic until we caught up with a car at the Summit. Following Mooch down the other side on his booming 748 was an aural pleasure. It was a delight to have Paul in NZ on his old Trumpy along - whenever I see that bike it reminds me of the days when I wore hair and flares. Met lots of interesting and varied people and bikes at the Sprints and did enough runs until I got to the point where I felt I had committed enough attrocities upon my naked Italian and would not get any faster so left before the end. I had been a bit wary of riding the naked bike at max speed however this turned out to be no worry at all, it remained planted and stable. Enjoyed the Lunchtime wheelie display - MD's standup style was graceful and looked like he could do that all day. Tony Sampson's was a more brutal exhibition but equally as brilliant.

Yeah man, awesome to see you running. I'm Steams brother, was out there on my GN too, you represented us little engined people well! My bike is the black GN with the BMW windshield to the left of Steams military GN in one of Bones's photo's. Was tempted to get amongst it but I would've smoked my engine doing 140 on my ginny.

Great meeting you Lissa, and yes, your bike is shinier than mine, try to keep it that way. I've given up!

Good effort. It's hard work capturing a moving object on today's digital cameras. They seem to have erratic time delays purposely build in to annoy us.
Cheers and next time give your bike a run. It's great to see such variety entered. It would be a boring show if only those late model 160+ hp bikes wrapped in plastic entered. I enjoyed watching the GN rider waving to the crowd as he flew passed in the Sept. sprints.

Great to hear the positive feedback guys - and the event wouldn't be possible without the support of riders keen to participate so if you are thinking about entering in the future........JUST DO IT !!

I have Certificates for those that left before the end. I will drop these off or post out over the next couple of days.

Results will be up on www.cliffhanger.org.nz in the next few days also.

Thanks again to all the entrants, marshals and other volunteers, and of course the sponsors.

Tony Sampson had best flying speed - 300.5kph
Dean and Maxine Van Ingen came all the way from Nelson to compete - Dean did about 294kph on Turbo Hayabusa, which unfortunately was not running quite on song, but Dean is keen to try again next time.

Craig Olliver did 298kph on ZX12R.

The Cliffhanger Hillclimb is being held 17 and 18 March, and entries are likely to be limited to about 45 riders. I'm getting mine in pretty early to avoid disappointment.

More info is available on the above website.

Just to back up what Deano is saying...

While it's nice to watch people doing 300kph - not one person had a bad word to say about anyones effort or there right to have a go. Personally - I'd like to see a wider variety of machines and I think I've talked one guy with a hot HD into having a go and why not? I'll be doing a write up for the Classic Club lads and try to convince a few of them to give it a go as well..

I really enjoyed the low key approach and the fun of it all.

Got me certificate today Deano - thanks mate. I'm cuffed!

Standing 1/4 = 16.29 Sec
Flying 1/4 = 99.3 MPH

To put this into context....

Cycle World road test of a 1966 TR6 SR (mech equivalent now my TR6C is running street gearing and I'm running a 67 engine in a 1970 chassis)

Standing 1/4 = 15.8 Sec
Flying 1/4 = 95.0 MPH

So my standing technique needs work but the old girls flying!

A stock 1970 TR6R would be 102 MPH and 14.9 sec...

Chuffed? I'm estatic!

I'm not surprised. Same issue as last time. People not told it was on and access and through roads to property blocked with no detour warnings at the entry to the roads resulting in having to back track 2 or 3 kilometers. You'd probably say "fuck off" too if it was done to you and you had no interest and no perception of motorcyclists as anything other than speed crazed gang members.

Ahhh, it takes all sorts doesn't it. One 'yokel' asked if the "caution tape' was necessary across his driveway........Ummm yes it is actually !! Despite being notified of the road closure weeks in advance, some people still forget.

I find it VERY hard to believe they did not know about it - my information is that all residents were notifed, and they only have to wait ten minutes or so before the road was cleared. Detour signs do not work one hundred percent either and in a lot of cases it is quicker to wait for the runs to end so...... pfffft.

Didn't we hear the same gripes about cycling races and access.....FFS...let's all sit at home and weave farken baskets or twiddle our thumbs so we don't farken upset anyone.

Well maybe the leaflets in the letterboxes just weren't enough. maybe they got chucked out without being read. At one point 2 locals trying to get back in both claimed they didn't know anything about it.

So true! I arrived about 2pm in my cage and driving down Dalefield Rd I came across a "Road Closed" sign. Not unexpected. So, I parked there on the side of the road. However, the next car that came down the road just drove right around the sign at some considerable speed and continued on down the road! :gob: Bikes were still coming the other way...

My understanding is that the Council must also publically notify any road closure in the local paper........can these people read ?

If there is any real urgency, the marshal can always let the start know and hold the bikes.....no big deal really, although having dealt with a few people from the Rapa now, little things do tend to stress them out more than one would expect.......so much for that country air......must be all that methane.

I had to breathe very deeply. Unfortunately people with property in Belvedere, Dalefield, and the Waiohini (sp.) valley use Dalefield as a through route, often on unregistered vehicles (What The?) so that makes the people preventing them from making their illegal journey the villains.

Deano - we had a fantastic time. It was well worth the trip up. It was a well run and well organised day. Thanks to all the Committee, marshalls etc for their hard work and efforts.

There are always going to be people who can't read, or are just plain whingers about motorsport events or just whingeing for the sake of hearing their own voice. You can't please everyone all of the time. There is always going to be somebody who is not happy or have their nose out of joint.

To the marhsalls who get the abuse from the locals, please try to hang in their and persevere with it - we know its not easy getting ear bashed.

If it wasn't for these type of volunteers, there would be no events like this anywhere and none of us would get the opportunity to have some controlled, safe, fun. We appreciate the efforts that you all went to and appreciate the shit you get for trying to run these events. THANK YOU!

We are looking forward to coming to the next event.

Sorry about the thread resurrect, just got back from the yearly South Island tour today. WOOT!

Concerning the locals, Skelstar and myself got one irritated local at the start line and that's it.

I let through many cars straight after a bike had just done started their run to go down the road and turn off at the first intersection. In this manner we hardly interrupted their day at all. They would have have had to wait much longer for a farmer to move their livestock across the road than wait for us to let them through in most cases.
