View Full Version : Wellington: Around the Harbour and Bay 10.45 - 1pm

SUNDAY CHRISTMAS EVE
I thought it would be a good idea to give the Rimutaka Hill and Martinborough a miss this weekend, given the traffic that will be on the road to and from Wellington - holiday travellers.
I will be at a staging point: Stokes Valley Caltex 10am Sunday for 10.15 departure [then at pick up point duckpond Avalon for 11am departure] into town and around the harbour and the bays. Looking to do the loop right around 11am - 1pm with coffee stop somewhere. [Chocolate Fish Cafe 497A Karaka Bay Rd will be open]
I have been advised: 'The chocolate fish in Scorching bay/Karaka Bay or the surf club at Lyall bay are the popular spots.' If it is/gets too crowded at Karaka Bay then carry on to end of route and into town to Ghuznee and Cuba Mall has been suggested.
Anybody want to pick up the ball for other staging points around the region.
Go to Calendar for route details: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&day=2006-12-24&e=1086&c=1
Please be mindful of staggered formation and following distances.
A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year - Stay Safe

The Bach along the Esplanade in Island Bay is really good.
Then you can go back up Happy Valley and down the Brooklyn hill to get to the Motorway.

Have fun there Buckbuck and all who join him!! Good way to spend Xmas eve.
We'll be heading the other way, over the Takas and to Wairoa in the Hawke's Bay on Xmas Eve day with a whole lot of other loonies!
Have fun and take care everyone, remember, it won't matter tomorrow what time you got there today.

I'll join you Buck!
The Surf Club at Lyall Bay sounds good, Never knew they had a coffee bar....
Will have to bring the wife for an outing too.
I love the bays ride, one of my favourites.
How about a pickup point at the Duck Pond on your way through (Say 11am depart the pond???)

The Bach is really good. We could go for a walk up to the Kemal Ataturk Memorial on the way too.

I live in Newtown (near the zoo), so where would be a good place for me to catch up with you? I don't really wanna go all the way to Stokes Valley (no offense!) from town.

Hi Celtic Sea lily, perhaps around Oriental Parade near the Freyberg Pool or further along to around the point. 11.20-11.30am thereabouts.

Great idea (sorry I'd only taken a few sips of my 1st coffee for the day when I replied to your posting, brain functioning a little better now). There is a small MB parking spot just outside Freyberg Pool, I'll wait there.
I'm the one with the beat up lookin' black CB250. I have a silver helmet. Cheers!

Blackmagic (Shayne - Black SV1000S) and Crypto (Glen - Black Hyo 250) are joining us too and will be waiting with me at the duckpond.
Good luck on getting into the Fish!!! That place is gonna be packed out to the Max!
The alternate option is we head back into town after doing the Bays.
Maybe even take over Cuba Street again and park up at the Bristol. I'm sure there'll be space a plenty there.

where are you guys riding to?
Andries, The route is laid out on the events calender.
Basically, all the bays from Oriental right around to Owhiro Bay. We're just determining a social/food destination at present.
Should be very relaxing and very enjoyable!
Catriona is coming and I think Shayne is bringing Tania. You should see if Nadine is keen. Good opportunity for the girls to catch up too.

Yes Dafe is right - The Choccie Fish is a very popular destination as well as having bugger all parking but we can do a ride by cos it's a fabulous cafe!
Alternatives could be Fidels in Upper Cuba St or there might even be something in Brooklyn or there are 3 cafes in Lyall Bay as well (like Dafe suggested earlier). I guess whoever is leading can make the decision.
Anyway it's a lovely morning in Newtown :sunny:

Will have some gathering points: Just around in Evans Bay, then Shelley Bay and Scotching Bay, and sound out where people would like to go to, Lyall Bay and Brooklyn and Upper Cuba St.

11.15 - 11.20ish (at Kaiwharawhara Caltex)
I think it would be easier for everyone if I met you at Kaiwharawhara as well, it looks like I'm the only "townie" coming and Oriental Bay will be busy today.
See y'all soon!
