I feel rather sorry for the boys in blue, they must be stretched really thin and be seriously short on man power (nothing new I guess). I've driven from Lower Hutt/Welington ---> Picton (via the ferry obviously) ---> Blenheim ---> Kaikoura ---> Christchurch ---> to Hokitika (Via Arthurs Pass) ---> Franz Josef Glaciers ---> Fox Glaciers ---> Haast ---> Wanaka (via Haast Pass) ---> Queenstown ---> Te Anau ---> Invercargill ---> Balclutha ---> Dunedin ---> Timaru ---> Christchurch, a total of about 2100 kms (+/-) and I've only seen 2 cops now, both driving in cars in the opposite direction (both were checking speed mind you).

Other than that, no speed traps, drink/drive vans or random vehicle/driver checks (rodney king style)... Seems we (i.e you) should complain less and appreciate the effort a little more... Unless they've all migrated North for the summer (are cops a migratory species?)

I've decided to give you guys a heads up:
Tomorrow morning I'll be around Christchurch for a little while, then I'm heading to Blenheim late morning/early arvo staying there the night. Leaving for Collingwood the following day (27 Dec) shortly after 10:00am and staying the night there. Finally, heading back to Blenheim on 28 Dec to stay the night, followed by leaving Blenheim for home at/after 10am on Dec 29th, catching the ferry and back to Lower Hutt...

I reckon it's a little fairer now? I'm in a silver falcon (may appear blurry), with tinted windows (legal 35% fronts btw!). Catch me if you can:dodge:

[PT - These are true travel times, but I don't actually speed, seriously]

Must be up here gearing up for New Years at the Mount.
I saw three in the 12km between work and home on Friday evening - one even followed me for about 2km before loosing interest.

Santa chose to keep my radar detector for another year ('cause I'm always a good boy, so that can't be the reason :innocent: ) so can only assume I was being speed checked.

To tell the truth, I did see another one in "Riviera of the South", he was just like I've found all cops (who I've met) to be, a bloody good bloke. He did give me something before I went on my way though:drinkup:

I think they've all congregated on Alexandra for the holidays.

Pretty much what Jantar said.

The poor police are supervising the pissheads at the Central lakes. Babysitting them to make sure they don't burn cars etc, like they did last year.

My average open road speed is healthy during these times. Probably good that I don't have 1000cc's.

Speaking of which, we're considering our options for riding south New Years Eve daytime ... wondered about Highway 22. It looks like a great bike road and since we are heading fro aumaranui, a good way to go

Somebody said that it wasn't worth ussing this road because of the cops,

There are SO many cops around here... in about half an hour of local/rural riding up north ways I'll see about 2 in half an hour and more if I'm heading south... sometimes up to four or five! Esp. Desert Rd way

Just because you didn't see them doesn't mean they weren't there. The most successful hunters are the ones you don't see.

hehehe... agree with lou there!

I came down to hokitika last night (love the rain) and between nelson and here I had one of the fastest and enjoyable trips I have done anywhere.

PS did you know that cruising at 16.0 18.0kmph on most straights that some bikes still do 17kms to the litre? I think the decimal points in the right place.
Had a minor engine stop (something got to wet me thinks) in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere. After a little messing around got it going again thankfully.

Ah bugger! Didn't know you were in town Stoney!

2 cops is on the low side, even by SI standards

Yes they are.
Dunkin' Donuts is a natural habitat and ecilops migrate to this environment at any time of the year.

Saw one in St Arnaud, continued on in the Murch direction...

Also heard from a mate, he got bust by a silver Hyundai for speeding last week, along the Buller area...

Nope, unless they're literally hiding in bushes without their cars/bikes, there were none. You often can't see the ones that get you, but you can always see them as you go directly past them, and I saw none. I also know when they check my speed, and none did either.

However!!! You sneaky sneaky coppers, I swear it's because of my post, but from Christchurch to Blenheim I saw 4 or 5! That can't be a co-inky-dink:shit:

They are definetly around Queenstown as I saw 4 on Xmas Eve between Arrowton and Queenstown. But I went up to Haast today via the Crown range and Wanaka and did not see one.

The sneaky buggers will be out there somewhere:scooter:

I managed to find one at the end of our street when I went to gas up on Sunday. Of course I had finished a bourbon and cola RTD about 10 minutes before (just the one so quite OK to drive) so got all paranoid when he followed me around a couple of corners ... but then he went away.

That can't be a co-inky-dink:shit: Actually, they seem to travel in packs along the major highways. Usually you'll see a patrol car or two maybe 5-10 minutes apart, then there'll be a mufti, another patrol car, another mufti. Something like that. I get the impression the idea is people will see the first car and decide that they should be safe to go a bit quicker, and the mufti's are there for those of us with luck/ sharp eyes/ quick reflexes.

As Lou says - and as I said too - it's not the ones you see that you need to worry about.

I didn't see any, and I spent a decent amount of time running around doing chores and stuff.

And I tweeked my screen and the helmet buffeting that kicks in at 90k/h vanished and I found myself doing er.. well over the speed limit down the motorway. I think I'm well due for a ticket for that :-(

To think they had a major blitz at few weekends ago. Maybe they thought they had scared us and shipped them off to the North island.

StoneChucker

hmm... I was always under the impression that cops could be obscured when they catch you, but when you go right past where they were hiding, you'd see them (obviously it'd be too late by then). But my point is, as you're driving, you're always going past any one point on the road, and can tell with some certainty that there are no cops at that point, and I never saw any at any stage, or any cameras.

I'm certainly not saying I can't be caught, just that up till then there were only the couple.

Anyway, my trip's "fin" and I catch the ferry tomorrow, I'll let you know if there are any clinging to any buoys on the way home.
