If only I had a valet to carry my helmet.

Ooo, err.

We had a deluge in Wellington this afternoon.

I fell over going up the steps carrying my helmet and centre punched the edge of a concrete step with my beautiful Kevin Schwantz replica Arai. 3 scrapes and a nice 6 inch long line where the helmet hit the first time.

Insurance will cover some of it, and I need a helmet to get to and from work, so once again TSS rescued a Wellingtonian and I am now the proud owner of an HJC Carbon Fibre "Lordship" HQ-1.

If it pleases the gallery, I would like to be referred to from now on as, "Your Lordship".

But a little bit broke. That is, lacking in funds. Quite.

I will take donations in beer.

I thought I'd broken my wrist but it's only a little bit sprained.

The other helmet was unscathed. If still rather minuscule.

Oh dear lord,

what have you gone and done ?

A mate of mine has a mint condition white and squiggly coloured line Doohan Arai from the 90's - he doesn't ride anymore (he is into blow karts now) and I have tried to prise the helmet from his grasp several times, all to no avail.........the bastard.

Ah, almost similarly my mother in law elected to carry my lid from the cafe at lunchtime (I was holding a six week old child and therefore had my hands full). Seeing her juggling it I broke the news that under no circumstances was she to drop it as these things are quite delicate.

And must not, for instance, be centre punched on concrete steps.

So, nice lid. Is it noisy? My HJC appears to be, as best I can tell, f-off noisy. But it's not like I have a lot of comparisons.

If it'll cheer you up...

Once, when I was even poorer than I am now, I went an bought myself a nice new lid to replace my ever-faithful but decidedly stinky Shoei. I took a day off work and went to the NEC show, got a good deal.

I forget what brand it was, but it had pinlock thingies for tear-offs and a flush-fit visor, those head vent tunnel things, and a ducks-arse pointy tail fin -- they were all the rage at the time. Probably and OGK, come to think.

Anyway, it was shiny, shiny and nipping my skull. I went for a ride on the saturday morning, to break it in and to clear my extra-fuzzy head (from the night before) and then went and parked up in town, planning to meet a couple of mates for a saturday afternoon pie.

I had just kicked the bike onto the stand when I saw a someone I recognised across the street. I waved, and he shouted something back, but I couldn't quite hear.

"Wait up!" I shouted, and started to take the lid off. Bit tight, still, being so new, put a bit of welly behind it and-

With an audible cartoon *POP* it shot off the top of my head and traced a graceful arc up, into the air, and I stood there with my hands by my ears, still holding its ghost. I watched open-mouthed as it floated back down into the middle of the road.

*CRACK*

I stumbled out into the stopped traffic and picked it up. It was so deformed that the visor would no longer close.

I'd had it for five days.

Dave

I haven't ridden with it yet, but I wear plugs all the time anyway and the Arai wasn't that quiet. The quietest helmet I've ever owned was an FM (not FFM) but I haven't seen them about for years.

I tried 6 brands today and only the HJC was comfortable enough. I've spent an hour typing on here wearing it and apart from slightly sore ears (they do that in any helmet - they are freaking HUGE) the fit is great.

I couldn't get a Shark on my head as there isn't enough space for my ears in it. Looks like Nolan, Arai, and HJC are it for me.

Bummer man. I wish I had thought of using insurance when I buggered my helmet.

Whoa! I knew that KB has been stretching the boundaries for a while now. But wearing a helmet while talking about bikes ... whatever next - in the pub?

Don't wear it to bed. I shall excuse myself from further "helmet" related double entendres.

Insurance will cover some of it
Your bike insurance or your house contents insurance?
What's the impact on your premium and no-claims discount?

James Deuce
28th December 2006, 07:53
Home and contents.

The impact is that I can't ride to work without a helmet so I don't get paid, so we have a mortgagee sale.

You are having some bad luck lately Jim.

Maybe it's a sign. Perhaps you should give up riding for a safer sport like bowling.

On a completely unrelated topic, can I have some bits off your bike?

A very good question and it's worth finding out the answer before making a claim for a relatively small amount.

Mind you in saying that, there was nothing better to get the christmas lunch out on Monday, then having that head look at me from the pages when on the crapper.

As the saying goes 'You scared the living shit out of me:gob: !'

Now, you owe me another christmas lunch ya bastard:angry: !

Hey dude, every cloud has a ilver lining eh.

Must have been the wind in Wellington that caused the helmet to fly. I can blame the wind in Christchurch for the murder a pair of Nike's and scratches to the front of my Oakley Sunglasses.

if I was up that way, your lordship would put my hand in my equally broke pocket and buy you a beer.

From a chick who likes to drink beer

Thankfully I've never dropped a helmet, but I got an irridium visor for my Shoei years ago and scratched it the day after I fitted it. I had the helmet hooked over my arm as I went through the checkout at the supermarket and scraped the visor along the metal edge of the conveyor belt! I was so pissed off because the scratch was right across the middle. I got used to it after a while but I never forgot how annoyed I was with myself for being so stupid! I'm always very careful when carrying my helmet now - our house is brick and has brick windowledges and before we cut down the lavender hedge in front of the house, I was petrified I was going to scrape it along the windowledge.
