4wd anymore!I'm guessing you mean South Kaipara Heads. Have a look at a map. Has it been cleaned up now? All the leftover UXBs, and ammo depri been removed etc etc.

The range is right up on the NW tip of the peninsula. However, there are other areas that are used for demolitions charges, live firing areas, etc, so unless you really know what you are doing, and where you are up that way, best to be heeding the warning signs that are posted.

If you haven't got the means to carry spare fuel, you can always drive to South Head. About 1k before the end (Picnic area) theres a road on the left. Take that and look for some trails to the right.

Head on out towards helensville from waimauku and take 'rimmer road'. This will take you to the 10 mile point on muriwhai where there is a cutout to the beach. Head north on the beach until it gets to the end where there is a lagoon with an Island in it. The bombing range is on the western side of the lagoon.

you would be looking at your ride to the south end and back to the park just to get there and you have to go up on out going tide and need to leave a good 2 hour a least before high tide due to the banks were the tide come up to i use to take enough for three tanks 1 to get there 1 to play with and 1 for return trip was a tricked out 91 cr250 check out wisesmaps .co.nz and just do a general zone in over the auckland map to get a idea of distance

We made it to the lagoon, before the sand became to soft for the 4x4, we just played around just south of the lagoon, because their was a roped off area, for some sea birds that were nesting up their.
If you wanted to go up their it would be about 2 tanks of gas, 1 and a half to get up their and and back and a little left over.

Didn't see a big neon sign pointing to the bombing range, so can't say exactly were it is.

We used to get up, and back, with 3 or 4 hours playing on one tankfull on BSA Bantams. Bantams under those conditions had a range of about 250km (you use more fuel on the beach than on seal ).

So I'd say you need to budget for 250-300km worth of gas at a consumption maybe 20 or 25% highr than "normal". It's going to depend on how you ride though obviously

Used to head up on the TT600, sit on the hard sand and not over rev it, maybe a few wheelies. That was still pretty fast on the big 4, over a 100km/hr. Got to ride up there for about a 1/2 hour from memory before having to head back. Wouldn't even bother taking a 2 stroke all that way personally.

Weve done it heaps. Never taken my 2 stroke up but the best bet is to cut back in to the forrest as soon as you can then follow your nose heading north. I used to fill up the 450 and take between 5-7 litres depending on how long was going for. I wouldnt reccomend riding up the beach all that way on a 2smoke last time we went up my mates 250f seized so take it easy on the beach.

sorry forgot how far away it is! 27km (ish) from rimmers cut out to the danger sign( now just a pole on the egde of a dune)

A cautionary word. If you are going to go up there alone (which is not really a good idea), do please make sure that you tell someone (someone reliable and sensible!) where you are going and what time you expect to be back in contact. And make sure that they realise if you DON'T make contact by the specified time, they should call the emergency services

I've been stuck up there alone overnight and it is a very lonely place, and it gets very cold at night. I wouldn't like to be stuck up there injured.

And cell phone reception is dubious at best.

I was just wondering are you a pilot or a navigator, those are not the sort of directions one would expect from you aviator types.

Whadya mean..? Sounded fine to me. Im a pilot, navigators are long gone.. Try this then:

Track to intercept radial 348 WP vortac, maintain 6000 to 38 DME vortac, descend 200'RA by 50 RNAV WP turn right HDG 030, maintain 360 KIAS.

Makes perfect sense to me..
