Hello Everyone,
I have been reading the forums quite thoroughly over the past 2/3 days and have picked up quite a bit of very useful information! What a great resource I have been missing out on.
Anyway i'll introduce myself - I ride a metallic blue Honda Hornet 250 - lovely bike imported from Japan. Luckily I was put on to a great bike by Peter at emoto ( www.emoto.co.nz ) and the bike is in perfect condition - i absolutely love it and it is so very sexy. According to Peter I got a very good deal on the bike so i'm very happy with that.
The bike arrived at Littleton port in Christchurch, and I couldn't resist riding it up - so I did! I have some pictures for anyone interested, but i'll leave those for now. The desert road is fun!
This was not my first bike however I did own an oldie ( but goodie ) 1990 VTR 250 for a short period.
The trip from Christchurch was a great learning experience for me, I took it very slowly and at a nice steady pace stopping regularly for fuel/food/rest. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would consider selling my Hornet just to import another and ride it up again! Or maybe two Hornets???$$$????
I have since been on a few rides up to Whangarei, and love it. I had a bad experience coming back from Whangarei to Auckland on boxing day having think my motorbike was breaking down, when in fact i was out of petrol! 3 hours of sitting on the side of the motorway is not fun! ( some of you may have seen me, a few bikers drove past ). I tried quite a few things, talking on the phone to a mechanic, taking out the air filter/tapping on the carby's with my hands, etc etc before the AA finally told me that i needed petrol. What an idiot. I learned about the "ON" switch rather then the "RESERVE" switch that day.
A kind lady in a car exited an off-ramp, turned around, exited another off-ramp behind me and pulled over to see if she could help just as the AA showed up. I wish I knew her address I could send her a bunch of flowers or somethin ;)
Well that's a huge introduction I just wanted to say Hello, and make good use of the "ON" switch on your petrol line, NOT the reserve !!

,, 3 hours of sitting on the side of the motorway is not fun! ( some of you may have seen me, a few bikers drove past ). ,,
No! No *bikers* rode past. A few posers on motorcycles may have ridden past. A biker ALWAYS stops. It is the Biker Law and the Unwritten Gospel. If a biker had seen you he (or she) would have stopped to see if he/she could offer any help. Anyone who didn't is no biker.

Thanks for the welcome Mrs Kendog and Kendog - sounds like you had a nice ride up through Gisborne - did you go through the gorge?

Hmmmm I have to say I was just over a hill, and most of the bikers who passed me were going fairly quickly so may have seen me too late... I also couldn't find a hazard light switch so perhaps some thought I was just resting? Anyway after this experience I will ALWAYS stop to help out another biker/cager ;)
Welcome and i too, learned that lesson a while back
hehe bugger ;) thanks for welcome :)

Yep through the gorge then round the cape clockwise, awesome ride, done the gorge so many times in the cars and round the cape once in our old Bedford housetruck, but a million times more fun on the bikes!

:woohoo: The swarm grows! I hereby give you firm salutations and most heart felt greetings to a fellow Hornet rider. From your post, I can see you are another passionate and completely obsessed Hornet owner!
I know about getting on it and riding and riding ... and riding! It just doesn't want to stop! It'll put a grin on your face and when you park it up for the night, you'll hug it, pat it, speak to it and love it...oh yes
Anyhow, join the www with http://www.hondahornet.co.uk/ and become a paid up member ... I have!
Any queries or probs, give me a PM - I am now the unofficial official welcomer and organiser of little two fiddy Hornets! Muwahahha! :innocent: :o

I think the people who've been reading posts by Hornet owners are shaking their heads and think we'll all pariahs! As an anecdotal observation, the owners of Hornets I've met, read about and other comments - Hornet riders are up there with the most fanatical and passionate riders! Able to endure any taunt about Hondas, the lack of fairings, the crippling wind blast, etc. etc.
I love my little ol'Hornet, I will pat it, I will hug it, I will give it a kiss and love it and love it....

the most honest and hurtful comment I have heard about the hornet is that it is too predictable .. .this of course is coming from someone who likes to cut loose, and have the odd scary moment.
Mine is as predictable as sun coming up.
if there is fault, it is the rider not the bike.
However, I have been "playing" with my suspension setup this week, and boy did I cock it up in a major way.
I managed to set my suspension up so that the front felt like it had no weight, and absolutely no grip ... lucky for me I noted what I changed. So yesterday I promptly "un-fucked" it .. now its back to its normal predictable self :)
Might have to book in a trip to the naki, and a visit to our local hero Shaun :)

I am thinking of carrying a syphon tube. So petrol can be shared between bikes. Mustang suggested this and he is to get a tube as his fatboy drinks a lot and has a little tank. Any suggestions on what/where to get a suitable tube?

Forget it! Go to Supercheep Auto and for a few bucks you can get a small and portable fuel pump system ... pipes and a little squeez pump all included! Small enough to stash under your seat!
My 2c anyways! (or should that be 10c now? )

I just got my '96 250 hornet yesterday - it's lots of fun. I did have a VFR400R a few years back - and had wanted a hornet 600, but there seems to be a general lack of them around... and I couldn't justify spending much - wife has baby on the way etc.
So yeah - another hornet to the nest here too.
I should maybe start a separate thread - but anyone know of where to get a good/cheap bike computer for my new bike?

Very passionate, and very obsessed! Everytime I leave my place i stop to check she is OK on the way out, give her a bit of a stroke, sometimes even start her up just to hear her ;)
I checked out the hornets nest, looks promising - some heavy modders there doing lots of cool things to their hornets! I'm not sure about the new hornet... kinda on the bench about that one - but overall a great site!

Wow there is not much room under the seat, and if I can fit that, i'm gonna buy one today!

ok then I'll start it off.
Hondas are of the homosexual persuasion, you need a bike made by another manufacturer with a different kind of engine, V twin? and questionable reliability, which reminds me, anyone wana swap batteries? (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=41309)

Yea as a learner bike, the GT250 is great, apart from the hp but :whocares: and the batteries :p
