Although my opinions of many Police Officers is low, of course there are good ones too.

I encountered one today, and thought I would share my story.

This should generate a few good replys from the fault-less do-gooder's among Kiwi Biker (I await with excitement).

Took the carbs off my GPX because a seal was leaking and fixed that, put everything back together except for all the fairing and mirrors/front indicators and so forth and took it for a spin to test.

Went the very long way round the block and encounter a mufti car going past an intersection I was pulling out from, and he turned round straight away and pulled me over (as you would expect). I was mentally writing out the cheque and having a chuckle that it was so close to the end of the year and I thought my total payments to the Police were going to be pretty low for 2006.

Had a chat and explained the situation to the officer, who so happened to be a biker himself, claiming to own 23 (I was impressed).

I ended up riding away without him even checking my details with comms.

He let me off with; not carrying drivers licence, expired rego and wof, learners licence with no L plates, the lack of mirrors/indicators and I'm sure more...oh and just to include you safety-nazi's, I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt as well.

What a good guy.

The money goes to Government - police dont see a cent of it.

Don't forget, the police deal with all manner of crap. Monitoring traffic/road laws is just a part of the whole crime fighting and road safety picture they deal with. They also have to scrape up dead bodies off the road and then go tell the families their relative was stupid. Yes there are poor cops out there - every employer has a mix of good and bad employees, but I believe that the vast majority of our police do a fine job everyday 24/7 with average pay and little thanks.

Sounds like you met a good one who was very reasonable in the circustances. Good to see some fair and reasonable decision making.

I have never had any issues with cops... I have respect for them...
The times that I've been pulled over and got tickets... I deserved them... cuz I was speeding... simple... if you take a risk... accept the consequences...

Each time I've been asked 'are you aware of the speed at which you were travelling?' to which I respond with the truth 'Yes Sir' (never been pulled over by a woman officer)... always polite... wish them a good day and we both go on our merry ways.

Only time I've been with someone and we got let off was due to ex's occupation... (I wasnt driving tho lol)

You should learn to use the "quote" system, that would be good.

What do you do that's bad?

I am currently down on the police because of the rapists Clint Rickard, Bob Schollum and Brad Shipton.

But all the police I've actually known have been very nice guys.
And they've saved my ass on many occasions, as I used to work security.
Yeah, the police are good. In my humble opinion.

Yep I'm still suspicious of the internal culture that allowed these monsters to walk so freely and even rise to the assistant commissioners position.

But on the whole I have no complaints for 2006 and I reckon that some of our resident rozzers here on KB seem talk a lot of sense. Scumdog included..!

i agree terbang, having worked for rickards, and knowing schollum through an associate, they are both bullies.

and Steam, the rapes happened 20 years ago - the people involved are no longer part of the police, so maybe it's time to move on and be concerned with the challenges curently being faced: kids constantly doing runners and dying, having to wear body armour as a matter of routine (that shouyld tell you that something has changed), drug violence on the increase, domestic and violent deaths dominating the lives of young investigators.....

I was on way to Palmy recently and as I always do waved to a cop comming the other way (probably partly why he U-turned and came after me) and 'randomly pulled me over' he said "theres a blitz on motorcyclists" which I replied " thats OK, while you targeting us motorcyclists youre leaving us truckies alone" we laughed.
As per normal my WOF, Reg and all were ok.... we then stood on side of road and yakked about 6 minutes or more about the custom chopper he was building from scratch and about the (some say excessive) $5500+ I had just spent restoring my ($3700) Virago XV750.

He was a good cop.

Then recently I was dieseling up my rig at Waipukurau BP and talking to a fellow trucker at same time (yeh I know I know .... never use cellphones when fueling up) ....... a highway patrol unit was there fueling up at same time and the officer overheard me talking about the 2 very dangerous cars that I was talking about and we ended up having a loooooooong chat,he was an awesome guy.

I told him if the police want an insight in driver behaviour come for a days ride with us in our rigs (20 metres long) and he said he can imagine and just driving from Waipuk to Hastings in his private car is scary enough with what he sees.

One good point to note when you're speeding/ crossing yellows etc ..... theres a LOT of ppl out there now that use the *555 system and you not only need to watch what you do in case a cop sees yah ..... but what will the motorist you may offend do.

Every dangerous/risky move near me earns the offender a *555 and an online police report afterwards... unlawful ones get them a blast on my airhorns and flash of lights as the pass to give them the message it was noticed... AND while you are shooting me down for it I DO NOT APOLOGISE for that ..... I spend almost 8 hours a day on the roads 6 days a week, ITS MY WORKPLACE and dont you like to have a safe and functional workplace? and If someone does something stupid and has an accident, that alone can have me parked up on the side of the road waiting for roads to open for up to 3 hours as in some regions they can divert the cars but not the big rigs.
