McDonalds Hepatitis scare http://tvnz.co.nz/view/page/411319/947301

Dec 30, 2006

There is an official public health alert for people who ate at an Auckland McDonalds restaurant shortly before Christmas.

Anyone who had food from McDonalds Greenlane in Auckland late on the 15th of December could have been exposed to Hepatitis A.

Medical Officer of Health Dr Greg Simmons says a food handler was in the most infectious stage of the virus during a shift from 7pm to 2am on that night.

Simmons says anyone who ate food from the restaurant during that time will only just be beginning to show symptoms of tiredness, nausea, and yellowing of the skin and eyes, if they were infected.

He says there is no ongoing risk at the restaurant.

Hah funny you mention it, was talking to an ex employee of Greenlane Mc Dee's and she was telling me of some of the antics they get up to there. This included, disgruntled employees giving some customers "special burgers". Didn't sound too healthy to me though we don't eat at Mcdonalds.

Anyone read about it in the Herald? They made it sound as though unsafe practices in fast food places was a shocking revelation...

I was up well before the crack of dawn (my sister's name is Dawn... ). I'm about to get out and about... Call me. I'm heading to Sth Aucks (Manakau/Otara) gotta meet up wif Da Familia (actually they drive a van) but you get the drift. Not like the cagers last night who don't understand that suburban streets aren't race tracks.. I was worried for GIJoe he might have got squished and left a really big mark on the road... (and my gadgets would have got broke - where's Zapf?)

Didn't have to worry about hep. burgers coz the Wings got me covered - with wings (Mmmm deep fried...)

I'm cruising - bell me...

google mcdonalds, hepatitis / i'm feeling lucky.....

The Greenlane case is not the first time McDonald's has been in trouble over hepatitis A. In 2002 a Wisconsin restaurant was closed temporarily after a 19-year-old staff member was hospitalised because of the virus.

Wisconsin...Auckland...out of how many Mcdonalds stores around the world?
That's pretty good odds that you are safe eating at Mcdonalds in my book!

There are plenty of other fast food places in New Zealand that I would be more afraid of and you are never likely to hear about them either!

Be careful out there......be very, very careful!.. John.

So just to review the facts here, nobody (apart from a potentially infectious food handler notified by McDonald's themselves) has presented with Hepatitis A symptoms as a consequence of eating any foodstuffs prepared at the McDonald's outlet in question. And we are none the wiser (officially) as to whether anybody else anywhere else has contracted a notifiable food-borne illness as a consequence of eating at a "fast food" outlet.

I'd rather take my chances any day with professionally prepared food than something some numb-nuts has warmed up or singed on their barbecue. Most causes of food-borne illnesses occur in your own home. Clean up your own shit before you start worrying about others'.

With the exception of sushi bars in southern China.

Always with the exception of sushi bars in southern China.

Quite frankly, we may bitch and moan, but the truth of the matter is that things here are generally so clean that we can tend to be less than properly vigilant in nastier parts of the world.

I'm not complaining. Anyway, only lower life forms patronise McDonalds.
